Nokia supports Connect2Earth

By the Team on 01 April 2008

GLAND, Switzerland – Global warming is certainly something of a hot potato right now. With the IUCN World Conservervation Congress happening in Barcelona this October, the WWF, IUCN and Nokia have teamed up to launch a new site aimed at helping people from all over the world to get involved.

Connect2earth.org is an online community which encourages users to share and express their concerns and hopes for the environment.

James Leape, Director General of WWF International, sums up the site’s aim

“connect2earth is a truly global space for young people to connect, share, express their concerns and their hopes about the environment online – and win some prizes in the process. This new community allows them to tell the world why they care about the environment and why it should be protected.”

The site is also optimised for mobile phones to create short films, submit pictures and share and submit comments. There’s also regular competitions for contributors, with Nokia devices up for grabs every month.

A panel of experts including renowned broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough will choose a selection of contributions to be shown off at the World Conservation Congress in October.

Allan David Reyes from Mobile Philippines commented

“This is probably one of the few collaborations that address, even in a small way, the pressing issue of global warming and environmental awareness. Through the efforts of these organizations, every individual can have a voice in the global discussion on how to help our planet survive the next millennium or so.”

We have to agree with Allan. The site itself points out that it isn’t looking for the standard fayre of your mate on a skateboard, but genuine pictures and video showing how and why you care about the environment. Already some amazing imags have been uploaded, from the picture-perfect Rwenzori Mountains
to the more frightening impact of global warming highlighted in the Earth Hour video.

Well worth checking out.
