New innovation hotspot beats in the heart of Helsinki

By Mike on 18 April 2008

ESPOO, Finland – Continuing to grow its community of world class research teams, the Nokia Research Center is forging an even closer relationship with the Helsinki University of Technology. Opening a lab on the Otaniemi campus, this fresh partnership will see the team pointing their brains at new breeds of communication innovation.

The agenda for this research might be reasonably targeted, with focus on subjects such as exploring indoor positioning and electromagnetic imaging, however, what’s perhaps most exciting is the free-thinking being encouraged. This is summed up in what Dr. Petteri Alinikula, Vice President and Head of NRC Core Technology Research, had to say about it:

“We are experiencing a major industry transition for mobile technologies and systems. With the transition, we do not necessarily know the right questions to be solved through research. The best recipe, in my mind, is to set the best people with diverse backgrounds together in enriching interaction and let them co-create the future”

This passion for innovation is again highlighted by Dr. Bob Iannucci, Nokia Chief Technology Officer and Head of Nokia Research Center:

“The challenge for us all is to be yet more innovative and imaginative in order to be successful in the next phase of the digital economy”

It goes without saying that innovation is crucial, but where do you think the focus should be?
