“The democratization of film”

By James on 28 April 2008

NEW YORK, USA – That’s how movie legend Spike Lee describes his latest adventure. And, according to Lee, we could be watching movies in theaters that have been shot on mobiles within five years.

It doesn’t sound like such a some wild claim, given that Lee has just signed up to take part in Nokia Productions – a new social film collaboration project.

The production is open to anyone to take part in, with the Nokia Productions website forming the central hub for users to submit content. The central theme of the movie will be humanity and the way music tells the story of humanity.

The idea is to get regular people to contribute footage, photos and text from their mobiles to the film which Spike Lee will then direct into a finished movie. The work will be in three acts, with Lee offering guidelines, instruction and feedback through the Nokia Productions website.

It’s the first time we’ve ever seen anything like this and it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. Getting your footage into the finished film won’t be easy though, as there’ll be various rounds of judging involved along the way. For aspiring filmmakers though, it’s an opportunity to work with a premier league director – something that doesn’t happen so easily every day.

Let us know if you’re getting involved.

I see the Nokia Productions site is dead now. Where is a copy of the completed film from this project, that we all worked so hard on?
