ENGLAND – The UK’s annual Bike Week event is only a few weeks away and in preparation, the team at Nokia have put together all the activities taking place using Sports Tracker. It works really well with a neat search function to find routes near you and the ability to click on an activity to get all the details. Nokia is an official sponsor of the week and will be showing off the latest in mapping and navigation.

LISBON, Portugal – Some people get all the plumb jobs. Managing 1,000 people early morning in a Lisbon Square, the team behind a new N-Gage promo video had their work cut out. The video brings to life the most popular mobile game ever, snake. The 1,000 people who form the game are painstakingly photographed frame by frame before the images are stitched together to create a stop-start animation.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The new Nokia Research Center project in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has yet to officially swing its doors open, yet we’ve noticed in a hidden corridor on the NRC website that it’s already begun casting its net to pull in even more talent and creative thinkers – the core focus on context aware services and the “Internet of Things”, an extremely exciting area of development that we’ve covered a many times here on Conversations.

UGANDA, Africa – Keeping an eye on the environment doesn’t just mean sorting the waste in countries where its produced most. Nokia’s take-back recycling scheme has just expand into Uganda in East Africa, the fifth country in as many months to introduce the scheme in Africa.

RABAT, Morocco – Sometimes new tech shows up in the oddest of places. And so it is that mobile TV is currently being rolled out across Morocco, starting with Rabat and Casablanca and another eight cities being added before the end of the year and 20 cities by the end of next year.

LOS ANGELES, USA – Choice is important. Being able to decide which tools you use for your work, rather than having to pick one from a closed selection can make life a lot better, not to mention easier. Good news then that WebMessenger has added support for Nokia handsets. What was previously a closed world (where you could only use a Windows Mobile handset to access Microsoft Office Communications Server) has now been opened up. And that’s a good thing.

Fusing the talents of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and NRC, this collaborative research venture is already promising to explore some of the most exciting and unchartered paths on the mobile development landscape, including contextually aware interaction, environment sensors and bold new visions for sustainability.
