Beware hoax emails and texts
By James on 03 June 2008
GLOBAL – It’s looking like some pranksters have been using Nokia to try and elicit some personal info illegally. Several hoax messages have been discovered purporting to be from Nokia and relating to Nokia promotions. The messages, sent by email and SMS, have been cropping up all over.
Nokia is encouraging users to ignore or delete the messages and to resist the temptation to reply. If you’re unsure of who the message has come from, you should most probably delete the message. Certainly don’t respond with your personal details. If you reply, or act on any other requested action it’s possible your personal information could be misused.
Given the open nature of the Internet, the best thing you could do would be to delete the messages without responding.
Nokia is working with the relevant authorities to try and stop this activity.

@MiGs – Wow, your comments say it all. That’s why these scams proliferate. You must be the #1 search item for folks looking to see if this is true. I think you might want to have klaxon sounds and big red flashing ‘SCAM’ to make it even more clear.

After I phone on behalf of my wife, Mr Paul asked for the ticket number, my wife’s cell number and my wife’s name, He also asked if I could phone him back in 5 minutes to verify her winning details, and hang up. After 5 minutes when I phone back Mr Paul mysteriously disappear and is not able to answer his phone….
I don’t know what they are planning in getting from this scam, but I am sure I did not fit his profile as a prospective victim…
Please look out for this SMS… Remember the Name is Mr Paul Basson and the number is +27720473773.

My son too got a similar message. Saying he had won R40 000 and to contact a Mr. Paul (071 914 6659). My husband then phoned from a landline and got the message service. He then tried the number from which the SMS was sent (078 716 5538).
He got hold a black man, saying he was Paul. He asked name, number and address. Said that cheque will be in the mail tommorrow. My husband still said, “I’m SURE, that would be really something damn amazing”. My son was so excited, that he had already mentally spent this money and I have to break it to him that it is total rubbish and that their are sick and nasty people in this world trying anything to get personal information. Please send these numbers to the relevant authorities that are looking into these scams. Perhaps they will help track down this people.
