I would actually have to disagree with both of you. I think video calling hasn't taken off because it's incredibly painful to use:

1. You have to buy an extra package from your provider. It's billed as minutes, which are inherently compared to regular voice minutes, in which case, video calling comes off as *really* expensive.

2. Both parties have to have a capable phone - from the provider. The carriers didn't think that perhaps I'd want to video call someone and *not* care about seeing them. This would actually solve the issue that James pointed out above, with the preening. Why shouldn't I be able to take a video call and see the other person, without them seeing me? And then have the option of initiating video from my end, should I choose?

3. It's currently only phone-to-phone, for no apparent reason. Why shouldn't I be able to make a video call from my phone to my mom's computer, or to my wife's N800 Internet Tablet? Why does it need to be phone-to-phone? What if I want to video call someone who doesn't have a data package on their phone? Why disable the possibility?

Imagine something like Gizmo Project on S60 supporting video VOIP/SIP calls over WiFi/3G. I can already make a video call from my N810 to a PC, and either side can choose whether or not to see/send video. My N95 has 3G and WiFi, as well as a front-facing video cam. Why shouldn't I be able to just use that and call it a day?

I think there is one more thing to it: Usually making a video call requires the two parties to be on speakerphone so they can hold the front camera in front of their face. Some people including me aren't too comfortable speaking louder than usual and having the speakerphone at full blast in public.
