I too personally feel that too many platforms are troublesome for both users and developers.

Not uncommonly it is seen that various mobile software’s have compatibility issues with different hardware devices of the same make.

But most of the users are indifferent towards this. More information should be provided along-with the device about its OS platform.

I think you are always going to need more than one platform. No single platform is flexible enough to accommodate all combination of needs.

The one thing I hope we see with a unified Symbian platform is the ability to make it modular. It seems silly to flash the whole device when, say, the web browser needs a security vulnerability update.

Modularity would also make it a lot easier to adapt the core Symbian to other uses (e.g. strip out unneeded/unwanted features, add others).
