people are ready for this, but it does have to have an industry of use behind it. transportation and kiosk/vending machines wouod be great starting points.

Really interesting article. Not sure if this would fly here in the USA. I don't think people are technologically ready for this.

I just wrote a small article at my blog about using the n82 as a checkout tool in the grocery store. really good stuff if your interested...

From my limited experience with NFC-enabled apps (e.g. at Mobile HCI 2007), I think that discoverability of more subtle NFC functions will be an issue for mainstream users.

If NFC is introduced as a part of a single service, e.g. transport ticketing, that's quite easy to communicate in the physical UI of the ticket checking device. You can watch the other people in line in front of you. However, it might be difficult to anticipate the outcome of holding the phone to a random poster, or even getting the idea that taking this action would be something you can do at all -> this calls for a standard symbol indicating NFC-enabled points of a surface. That type of icon might be hard to design universally.

I've also noticed that different NFC-enabled phones had to be held in different ways to register optimally with the system. It'll be interesting to see how the physical UI design of NFC handsets will evolve to provide the right affordances for users. Please do not repeat the UI-nightmares of EC-Card machines - users shouldn't have to try four orientations of their phone before NFC registers...
