New Nokia navigator pinpoints India

INDIA – In recent months we’ve reported on the rapid evolution of mobile technology in India, ranging from the interesting solutions being introduced tailored to local farmers to the wider positive global impact of Nokia India being a hub for innovation.
Echoing this progression is news of the new Nokia 6210 Navigator handset coming to India, an unassuming device that’s subtly beginning to enforce the vision of GPS and location-based services as a standard.
This is something that Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo highlighted back in May when he mentioned that Nokia is hoping to ship “35 million GPS-enabled Nokia devices in 2008, which is equal to the entire GPS device market in 2007″. And it’s devices such as the understated non-Nseries 6210 Navigator that promise to make the integration of GPS and context aware Internet services become as common as text messaging over the coming years. It’s that idea of those invisible yet indispensable services again, as here’s a handset with high-speed 3.5G connectivity enabling the fusion of location and contextual Internet info to happen seamlessly and discreetly.

Nice to see GPS devices in India. But you guys need to expand the coverage, from a handful of metros to tier-II and III cities

I haven’t used the 6210 Navigator but I have used the E71’s GPS and its quite good. Address search is not so great. Names of streets are not accurate in the maps, so search fails often.
I really cannot type an address and then ask to be navigated to that address. So I search for a locality, pick a result that’s closest (I live in Chennai, so I know) and then use it..just for testing actually.
The navigation is quite accurate, once I can pick the destination.
GPS lock is also pretty fast..order of seconds.
I got the 90 day navigation trial along with the mobile. Its very expensive in India for people to upgrade it fully. I guess it is 12.99 euro for 6 months.
Overall, it was good and turned several heads

Its great to see such initiatives. However the one thing which needs to be fixed ASAP is map coverage! They are just 6 cities covered in the entire country. In the northern part, the only city which has maps in Delhi. Dismal.
May be because of the size of the country there may be quite a volume of sales from those 6 cities alone, perhaps more than from certain other country’s sales but just look at the potential thats being wasted.
That being said, the map detail in Delhi is decent, I was happy see a lot of local information… ATM’s, Restaurants and so on. But then again, there is still room for improvement. If I were living in Delhi Nokia Maps would be my best bet definately but the problem is that I don’t.
As far as the Navigator goes, having played with it at the MWC I have to admit its a slick device and the inbuilt compass functionality is neat, specially useful for walk based nagivation.
All in looking forward to it, but Nokia please don’t make us wait that much. I have been waiting for maps since I bought the N95 in April 2007. Its almost August 2008 now – 16 months!

If it uses Nokia Maps and is anything like the GPS on the N95 and N82 , then it will come in very handy in big cities like Bangalore or Mumbai but will be of very little use anywhere else.
My town “Manipal” ,for example, is just a dot on a giant field of green in Nokia Maps.

i personally enjoy GOOGLE MAPS and GPS.
i know a handful of friends in nokia that prefer google maps.
the GPS functionality is same as Nokia Maps but coverage is more i.e. more cities are covered.
On the other hand GPS in USA with Nokia Maps works great, simply amazing and address search works fine as well. i took a walk over 3 miles and the GPS tracked my location with perfection.
the article does not mention the nokia maps feature but the comments did so i have put my views. as far as the 6210 goes it will not prove the point that nokia hopes it would in india.
