INDIA – The concept of a mobile-based universal remote control isn’t new, yet the hope of one remains a hugely popular prospect that we’ve collectively scribbled on our wishlist. And whilst the reality of a successful one-size-fits-all solution is being researched as part of the Homebird project, others are taking it into their own innovative hands to solve their personal remote control needs (trust Jan Chipchase to spot this one, highlighted in his post entitled The Power of Remote / Field Hacks’).

ESPOO, Finland – Some news yesterday was added to my long list of ‘interesting’ news from the past week. While I won’t categorize all the stories I am about to discuss as ‘bad’, it certainly is the kind of news that makes you pause and look up from your navel.

SPAIN – With more than 70 per cent of the music purchased in the country being local, the addition of the Nokia Music Store for Spanish music fans should be something of a boon, given many of the 4 million tracks on offer come from local artists.

LONDON, England – Get up close to it and it’s patently obvious the new 8800 Carbon Arte is a bit of an engineering marvel. If you’ve ever spent time with Carbon Fibre, you’ll be familiar with its weave, and typical lack of consistency. Now, try get that down to phone proportions, and make it look right at the same time. No easy task, as senior design manager at Nokia, Daniel Gratiot explained when we met him.

GLOBAL – With all the excitement of last week’s The Way We Live Next event, an interesting titbit of news eeked out without us noticing (punish us now!). Regulars will know all about our penchant for all things touchless (and our apparent Haphophobia) so we’re treating the news as good that Visa and Nokia are working together to bring Visa payment and “payment related services” to new devices, starting with the soon to be available 6212 Classic.

GLOBAL -Even though I never really had a clue what it meant, I’ve always been (as have Mike and Charlie) excited by the concept of The Internet of Things. See, mobile browsing isn’t a brilliant experience. Sure, snapping quick tugs of information is fine, but nobody’s going to spend their day surfing on a small screen. I have no desire to try, and I doubt many others do either. But that’s not all the Internet is good for.
