The story behind the Arte
By James on 29 September 2008
LONDON, England – Get up close to it and it’s patently obvious the new 8800 Carbon Arte is a bit of an engineering marvel. If you’ve ever spent time with Carbon Fibre, you’ll be familiar with its weave, and typical lack of consistency. Now, try get that down to phone proportions, and make it look right at the same time. No easy task, as senior design manager at Nokia, Daniel Gratiot explained when we met him.
But that wasn’t all. Gratiot also revealed that there are no fewer than 90 people involved with the production of an 8800 Carbon Arte. Pretty intense, huh. Watch the vid for the full skinny on the, erm, metal and carbon clad skinny.

With all due respect: really? Lack of consistency? Why not complain that PS is hard to deal with because the balls won’t stop rolling around:

This is what it looks like before you still plastic in the injection molder.
I’ve not seen this particular phone, but have seen some very, very, very precise CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) aerospace parts, to the degree of precision I’d think you need for a mobile phone… 20 years ago.
I am not a manufacturing engineer, but am marginally conversant in the technology required, and have problems figuring out why this took that long to work out.

I have heard on Nokia Business website that this one is to become independent of Nokia. Why?? Mr. “Greg” from Nokia Business is allways saying “we are getting independent, we are getting independent so now it will be much better!” , things like that.. Do they have problems with the “Nokia” itself? I thaught it was everything the same thing. It remembers me when Siemens sold Siemens Mobile company to Benq: it went to bankruptcy. (Of course it was a different case, I know). Whatever.

Why talk about design? The carbon arte has soo much defects right out of the box I am still waiting on another software update (3th already) and we are talking about phone with price tag of 1600 euro! And one more thing Nokia “premium service” is just a one BIG scam ! ! !
