The web made by hand

LONDON, England – Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been playing with Nokia viNe. Regulars will remember my fondness for the idea when it was first mooted a while back. I’ve been treated to the alpha version of the software which has been enough to get stuck in and see what it’s all about.
My participation so far has been reasonably limited, but surely enough to want to write a little about it.
So the idea is simple. Switch on Nokia viNe, take shots, move around, see and record things and when you’re done, transfer the whole lot online. Why? Well, actually, why not? I was away last week and it was quite cool to come back and see where I’d been, and the shots I took whilst I was there. There’s something faintly satisfying (for someone who hasn’t really bothered to do it before) to see your pics on a map in the (almost) exact spot you shot them. I quite like it.
No, I don’t (and most likely won’t) use viNe every day and there’s no need to. It’s a bit more of a special occasion app for my liking. Mrs BC couldn’t understand why I’d want to use it when I showed it off
first day, until I explained it’s potential for shopping expeditions. She still wasn’t convinced. Still, she only has a 6300. I don’t expect her to get it, yet. I do though and I’m fast becoming a big fan of it.
The program is still very much in alpha phase, but could see itself wander further afield before too long. I certainly hope it does, simply because it deserves to be. If you fancy a look, you’ll find my vines under “Technology” if you look at the Nokia viNes site. Now, who’s up for it, and what would you use it for?

We run an expat site in Italy about our personal experiences. Posts are regularly geotagged and anyway we travel a lot.
Showing off those trips would be great. Merging with Sportstracker and Friend View would be even better as the usage is 80% overlapping.

I like the idea of the Nokia viNe*, and I’ve been looking to the site for updates in its progress and hoped it would be available to download soon. Still waiting though, but as with all good things, I’m sure its worth waiting for.
I recently went on holiday to the other side of the world, and took along my N96 and made full use of the Geotagging feature when taking photos so I could later upload them onto my Ovi site and see exactly where I had been.
As you James, it was exciting to see the exact spot I had been standing when shooting my camera.
It has no serious implications, but it certainly is fun.
Am looking forward to using viNe.
*Why is the N in viNe uppercase?

I’m sorry to be the negative voice here, but I’m rather embarassed for Nokia that NokiaviNe isn’t publicly launched yet, for a few reasons:
1. From everything I’ve seen and read, it’s more or less a branded/prettier version of SportsTracker, down to each feature. How hard is it to duplicate that?
2. NokiaviNe was announced at the same time as the Nokia N85 and N79, both of which are now shipping in various countries.
I think it’s rather silly that Nokia continues to announce new services that aren’t ready to go, and often aren’t for several months. It started with N-Gage 2.0, continued with the Music Store and Ovi, on into Comes With Music, and now NokiaviNe. What’s the point of announcing a service or application that no one can use?
I understand the desire to ‘create buzz’ by keeping it exclusive, but it’s just plain silly to announce a web service that isn’t available to use.
