Nokia N97 marks evolutionary milestone for Nseries and mobilekind
By Mike on 02 December 2008
BARCELONA, Spain – The N97 isn’t a device that will trigger knee-jerk hysteria, but instead it should breed cool-headed excitement at the prospect of a new era of mobile experience.
It may be an Nseries handset, but the N97 carves a new space in the otherwise blurred realm between smartphone and laptop – a product built on a foundation of rock solid mobile principles, Nokia innovations, and tangible new technologies, pushed to the extreme and embodied in a slimline pocket shell.
Just as the original N95 re-shaped our perceptions of what’s possible with a mobile device, the N97 again raises the bar beyond the reach of its peers by equipping us with a product that fuses the best proven Nokia hardware, software and Internet services, blended with a new flavour of design, ergonomics and usability.
Read on to explore the N97’s full list of talents.
The most physically immediate stand-out feature of the N97 is its kick-out full QWERTY keyboard, hidden behind a 3.5-inch widescreen 16:9 touch display that tilts smartly above the keys. Both control methods neatly coexist and are tailored to ensure every experience, be it messaging, social, entertainment-focussed or otherwise, are manageable via the most instinctive physical toolset available. The touchscreen promises to be exploited to full effect, even when inactive, courtesy of a new homescreen that automatically sucks in live information via custom widgets sat on a S60 5th Edition backbone.
The N97 enters the fray stomaching 32GB of on-board storage, double that of any mobile device currently in existence, and can take up to another 16GB via microSD, enabling it to become a portable multi-media computer with 48GB in your pocket. Of course Nokia wants you to abuse this space with music, movies, photos and N-Gage games, and as such has worked hard to ensure the N97’s battery is up to the task – it promises to kick out up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video.
Embracing location based services and the concept of context awareness, the N97 is location-savvy, automatically sensing where it is at any given time via A-GPS. The benefit being that you’ll be able to tap into local services with ease and share your social location with friends minus any extra fiddling or fuss.
Other key talents include a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash, GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries, had this to say about it:
“From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence”
It will cost 550 Euros (before taxes and subsidies) when it launches in the first half of 2009. What do you think? Watch the video and leave your comments below.

Initial thoughts: I think I want one.
Where can I get one? Seriously!
Being more pragmatic about it for a second. This is the first phone in a long time that I’m actually getting excited about. The new form factor for one looks good and seems like a winner… the stats are usual top of the range fare, (although the onboard memory is staggering!).
What gets my blood pumping though is the new desktop. With any new Nseries – nearly 9 times out of 10 – all of the early complaints are about the firmware. ‘X crshes Y’ or ‘Y freezes X’ – I’m hoping the firmware on this handset is what truly makes it great.
So the new widgety design/interface is very exciting indeed. All of that information being pulled in from (any of?) your different sources.. instant connection to all of your friends whereabouts, information, online shared items..
The potential here is massive.
Charlie, what do I have to do to get one?!

Having had handson with the N97 a number of times now, I’d be interested to know what *your* thoughts are of the device?

HTC Kaiser had the same form factor 2 years ago.
iPhone had the touchUI 2 years ago.
Is this innovation, Nokia?

@Vincent,
Did you own a Kasier? Quite possibly the worst phone I’ve ever owned. Flimsy build quality, atrocious touch screen, barely worked as a ‘phone’
Thankfully my Mrs dropped a can of beans on it that smased it smitherines and we swapped it for E71

Seems excellent. I’ve been wondering why they haven’t turned the internet tablets into full featured phones (or phones into full featured tablets).
I really hope the camera lens has a cover, unlike the 5800. Is the memory card size limited to 16GB or is that just the biggest card that’s sold today?
I don’t mind the lack of multi touch. I never really understood what’s so special about it aside from the novelty factor.
Interesting to see what Apple has in store. I wouldn’t be surprised if they came out with a 5 megapixel, qwerty phone of their own. With the advantage of the centralised application store that would be a tough competitor even for the N97.

Multi- touch will reduce your clicks and they are like shortcuts. Eg.. rotating the image, zooming, etc.. Having touched two figures together, can open a new menu.. Its all about fast access, ease of use and fun.. The traditional way is click-click-click….now its gone.
Cheers !!!

I’m not impressed , It’s just a hyped up N Series when compared to it’s earlier S60v5 sibling 5800 Express Music
Here’s my comparison
Screen :
N97 – 3.5 inches 640 x 360 Pixel Touchscreen
5800 – 3.2 Inches 640 X 360 Pixel Touchscreen
Camera :
N97 – 5 MP Carl Zeius Duel LEd Flash
5800 – 3.2 MP Carl Zeius Duel LEd Flash
OS : Both Symbian S60 V5
Onbaord / Expandable :
N97 – 32 GB + 16 GB Card
5800 – 8 Gb Card
input MEthod :
N97 – Touch screen Keyboard and slide out keyboard
5800 – Touch Screen Keyboard
both has GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack
so where is the difference Price yup there the difference matters
N97 – 550 Euros Expected in 2nd Half 2009
5800 – 330 Euros in India ( Jan 09 Launch )
So for 220 Euros all I get is a lrger screen on board memory , some widgets which I think could e installed later on 5800 , a keyboard . no Thanks
reminds me of N95 -8gb and N96 playing again

I also want gps maps all over europe preloaded due to the high roaming charges for a 40e extra. Also I miss the ability to watch small movies in any format on e71 so please adress that. Also to be used as a internet device outside your home country telcos need to offer cost reduction for roamers /Stockholm

If the UI is *really* that fast, and the transitions / redraws are *really* that smooth, then it has a chance against iphone/android, despite the S60 UI cruft… I guess we have to wait for real demo.

I’m glad this kind of device will finally get available.
Some Questions, though:
How thick?
Is there a model for right handers as well – i. e. d-pad to the right?
Is it a USB host? Or is there any other way to attach a big screen and a decent keyboard / pointer?
Thanks

Watching the demo video (from the NY store) on YouTube, the device currently looks a little unresponsive, with noticeable pause between users request and anything happening, as well as visible redrawing of the screen at times. Get that sorted out in an update and you may well have a useful phone.

I think nokia should make a phone with at least 8 megapixel camera and it’s video quality be more than 120 fps. n97 is nice product but it would be better if it didn’t have any key board.
if nokia n97 doesn’t have any key board and it is camera be 8 megapixel with 120 fps of video capturing.
it will be the best mobile phone in the world, but unfortunetly, again this new product has some disadvantages.

Nokia gets it: a large 3.5 screen; QWERTY keyboard; tilt screen;3.5mm jack; and a decent camera.
It’s true that all these element can be found separately on different phones. But no one has combined them all in such a slim package.
The software looks great. I may have preferred WM 6.1 as an OS only because I know it and have lots of programs I like for it.
The OS shown in the demo videos is truly beautiful. I’m very interested in this phone.

Finally a non-proprietary phone that has EVERYTHING and a nice GUI.
Thank god it doesn’t run Windows Mobile – which I really hate (slow and incomprehensible).
I use the camera, music, browsing and gaming a lot, and this phone seems just perfect. NGage gme support(Check!), J2ME game support(Check!), 5 MP cam.(Check!), Touch that makes browsing nice(Check!), 32 GB mem. and 16 GB mem.card support.
And it has a D-pad on the keypad as well – good for gaming.
Just pure superior excellence.

Excellent work Nokia.
Whether this has the potential to knock the iPhone off the spot as the “phone to beat” position has yet to be seen. Either way though, this demo video has lots of people (me included) already waiting for next year!
But,
Every time there was a “touch” in the video, there was a sort of rippley-wavey-white thingy where they’d touch. Not being a Symbian user (I’m still with a Nokia 1112 from 2006), I don’t know if it’s just for demo purposes, or really there. If it is, it looks horrible and would really annoy me – get rid of it or leave it as an option!
Other than that, another excellent phone, and one that’s sure to provide a useful boost to an ever-growing market.
Well done.

I’ll ask here a similar question that I asked at Jaiku:
What specifically are the sensors enabling that the N97 is exploiting? Point and Find was touched upon during the keynote, as well as Nokia Maps 3. The answer is indeed in there, but hasn’t yet been stated by much of the talk about the N97.
What do those sensors do automatically, that enables this personal internet that was spoken of?

Yeah not a great deal of difference between the Nokia 5800, although do like the Querty keyboard on the N97. Disappointed about lack of multi-touch as greater feature of the iphone.
Nokia N97, 5800
(dis.) clunky interface, no multi touch, limited to (2) zoom in internet, no app store
(adv.) music direct download to phone, querty keyboard.
Apple iphone,
(dis.) only wifi music download, no removable battery, no querty keyboard
(adv.) best touch interface, app store
Neither iphone or Nokia touch fullfil “all” requirements for a true mobile media device replacement for the laptop.
I feel until Nokia has less clunky interface or iphone allows music downloads. I will need to wait a year or two for the market to refine.
Although good first attempt, I expect Apple to release new iphones next year.

It’s about TIME Nokia! I willing to bet about the time it decide to make it to the U.S., it will need a half a step upgrade (n95 to n95-8gb) to be relevent. They wasted to much time with that “business as usual” n96! the game is innovation! Samsung is on 8mp cams with 120fps, apple is playing with the market, with its lite weight(no specs, lacks typical phone features) yet titan iphone! Nokia needs to push the envelope and stop leaving margins of take over. That means get a organized app and music store running that works well(itunes has flaws… Exploit!!!), put in a tv tuner (n96), n put back the infrared(n95),dedicated music buttons, opticle mouse, bring the pain that you use to to competitors!…. Outside of that yea the n97 looks like a great phone 2 have. P.s. Did anyone notice they didn’t show a touch screen keyboard or simulate how to make a call on n97??? See! more half stepping by Nokia. Tisk tisk!!!

Well done Nokia! I must admit it looks good and functional.
Now, most important:
)
Does it have Push E-mail???
And can you customise the widgets, or maybe when you do a launch you can prepare some for up to date news (like widgets for Bloomberg, Reuters, BBC, etc….)? Also, widgets that could support current stock market data rolling on the screen………….then you would have a definitive killer for all the worlds (kids playing games, people just enjoying music etc…. and business people serviced to the maximum)…. it would make it a real travel companion and a centralized info point to always take with you (huh, this might even be a slogan for the commercial

I hope they are using firefox browser cause the browser on my e90 was awful. Great potential but there is no new thechnology being displayed here. Couple that with Nokia’s once a year firmware updates and things can go south really fast.
(does the keyboard have a light? It looks dark. )

OK Nokia please don’t miss this one up …!
Remember all the fuzz about the previous N96 and when I had it I was disappointed with the crashes Non-although there Navi weel , slowness and all that with 2 used Gigs from your 16 G. Please, I love your phones designs and technologies.so please don’t lose us (customers) by the weekness of performance. I say you take as much time as you want , raise the prices as you wish but please give us the dream products we used to find in your stores earlier. Because it’s a tease to provide an ineffective features ( you pumped up this precious baby with features so take your time to tune it up it supports) it’s a -nail on the head hitting- gigantic features like the gigs on the handset itself beside the extra micro sd ( please expect them to be used by the user and support us with fancy apps like the Navi weel and I mean the real thing this time not only a so cold “help file error” ) update it … refine it ….customize it do what ever is possible to make this one as flawless as you can to AVOID the frustrations of the N 96 and other handsets. ALWAYS A NOKIA CUSTOMER, a fan and a lover for it’s products wish you best in the new year.

The addition of the touch screen and keyboard to what sounds like a turbo boosted N95 is no bad thing. There is still nothing wrong with the N95 to be honest so I would love to use the N97 in the same way. Nokia makes phones, especially in the N series, that really suit my personal and business needs. This phones sounds like it will be even more suitable and is what I am looking forward to.

@Farhan
You forgott one special thing, the diffence between 5800 XpressMusic and N97 are that 5800 XpressMusic is not a Part of the N-Series specialy the NGage-Features. So i think, that more People wait and buy N97 a fine Smartphone and Gaming-Console in one.
And i don´t know if it realy possible to play any upcomming NGage-Game wich was designed for N97 on the 5800 XpressMusic.
And what a realy terrible Smartphone is Sonys Xperia X1? Did anyone have hold it in his Hand and press the Keyboard from it? Another Point is that X1 has no Sensor to switch the Screen from Horizontal to Vertikal-Screen. You must use a key to switch it arround and so i will take the nice N97 and not the X1.

I am truly excited about the N97!
It’s possibly the most innovative product in years; yes, it is an iPhone killer.
Its applications and scope reach much farther than the iPhone. My only question is, how is it as a CELL PHONE?
I do a lot of talking and vocal communication and need to have great connectivity.
Another question is who will be the BEST carrier in the US?
Who has 3.5 or 4 G capability or plans for such in the near future?
Bottom line: Price will be a draw back with the economy as it is, but I for one will go without lunch for months to pay for it; IF it works as demonstrated and IF the carrier has good connectivity! I will be saving my money NOW for the opportunity to buy one when they go on sale in the US! Ronald G.

North American Wireless Service Providers are very hesistant to allow a WIFI enabled phone. I don’t expect to see Nokia N97 before 2010 or 2011 in North America.
Nokia N97 is a excellent phone and I must say the designer got it right this time. All cell phones must be build wide wide screen format 16:9 or even 32:15 like aquous 931sh with the keyboard hiding under screen.
I beleive Nokia N97 is the ahead of competion now.
Next generations of N97 must improve on display resolution and software.
It has A-GPS (cool) but what about Stand Alone GPS??? Nokia must allow the phone to be used as independent navigation device, either with built in GPS receiver or with an external GPS receiver and mount. If this can be accomplished the device will sweap whole range of GPS and PDA related products from the market and it will be more attractive for the people on the go.

How much will it cost with tax? Hopefully, the givernment will not impose a 200% tax rate for foreign products. Camera’s lousier than N96. N97 is 2584×1938 while N96 is 2592×1944. and will it crash? Will it be slow to respond?

The features are enough to interest me but the camera is still a 5MP why not fit an 8MP in there like other leading brands? Quite disapointed by the lack of advancement in that area.
50/50 as to get this phone based on that reason alone.

the phone looks a bit heavy with a keyboard
im disapointed that there is no duo slide like the previous n95, n96 because it attracts teens

There is a big hype at the moment about the N97 but I’m not impressed so far.
I was shocked to learn that the N96 was actually shipped with a slower and older processor then the N95 1st generation was, and a lot of the symbian software is strugling in the N96. Will N97 follow the same line of cost cutting as they did with N96?
I cannot speak for you guys, but IMO, We should all remember about the credit crunch, no job is safe now-a-days, to buy such expensive device unless you loaded with cash, then it can be a big commitment for some, personally I’m thinking about cancelling my N95 contract instead and save some money.
Here is a consideration for your guys to think about, a smart brand new portable netbook with 120GB hard drive “Acer aspire one” can be purchase at about £150, smart, small and portable and it even has a webcam, much better for surfing the web, in the other hand most of the nokia mobiles cost more then a big update laptop, is such a big investment really justified?

The UI is still a bit slow and I hope it improves when it finally is released. I’ve got an N95 and wanted to wait for a new Nokia that would be a real step up from my phone N95 8GB & N96 are too similar to what I have now but this one is something special. But if the UI doesn’t improve I’ll probably get the Samsung Omnia.

This WILL be my next phone. Happily my current contract runs out 1 month after this is due to hit the shops in the UK.
This is the first phone since the n95 8Gb came out that has excited me!
It has all that my current phone has, with much much more. Touch screen outer-side, beautiful and smooth slider which sits perfectly for watching on the screen, (lacking on N95).
Bring it on!!

Seriously this phone os awesome i agree the camera should be higher megapixel and the home screen could do more like the G1 scrolling sideways on screen to reveal more completely customisable space but in terms of design, build quality, user friendliness, video recording and system space it is better than all other competetors out at the moment.
You know it’s the best
I’m saving for it.

Nokia N97: “World’s most advanced mobile computer”. “The most powerful multi-sensory device”. “Mobile computer”. “Smartest smartphone on the planet”
Tentative Price:(India)
First half of 2009; (INR) Rs.33,500.
I wanna pinch few considerable -ve points:
1) When a boy growsup to a MAN? Are they still investing dollars in R&D on Xenon flash?
2) Forecast, plan & Understand market trend to SATISFY customers with best of the best upgraded features like: User-interface with Multi-touch, Lens pixels, variety of colors, smooth& stuck-free operations, etc. Jaiho…KirAru, Hyd, India.
