Reaction to the N97
By JBC on 04 December 2008
BARCELONA, Spain – There’s been no shortage of coverage of this week’s big announcement. And in terms of size, the volume of opinions is just as big as the volume of coverage. This makes for pretty interesting reading too. Of the 1,000 or so N97 related stories listed in Google news, we’ve just flicked through a handful of intriguing headlines to see what’s been said.
Here’s a snapshot of what’s being said…
Brian Caulfiled from Forbes.com makes the comparison to Netbooks, with his rather strong headline of “Why Nokia could kill the netbook”. His reasoning is certainly interesting, but he delivers a twist at the end which makes the whole thing worth a look:
New York-based Paul Taylor at the FT.com wonders whether it’s too little too late, citing a number of reasons as to why the N97 might well have a tough time of it. He isn’t all negative though, describing the device as both sleek and innovative.
While the widget concept is a familiar one to PC users, the N97 will be one of the first smartphones to incorporate the technology.”
Seth Weintraub takes a more hardline approach in his blog on Computerworld. With the headline “Nokia N97 fails as an iPhone competitor” sure to attract plenty of attention, he goes on to list his reasons why he believes the N97 isn’t going to take down iPhone.
Writing in the LA Times, Alana Semuels draws a curious medievil analogy that’s well worth a read. Semuels quotes Current Analysis research director Avi Greengart who was in Barcelona and played with the device calling “drool-worthy”and “a beautiful device”.
Lily Peel at the UK’s Times Online got some hand’s on time with the device and was pretty pleased with it. She described the addition of the slide out screen as “a nice touch”. Lily also picked up on the software:
Finally, Jack Ewing at BusinessWeek believes the N97 is the new rival to iPhone. Drawing the laptop comparison, he opens his story with:
That’s just a snapshot of what we’ve seen so far, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty more to come. Now, what do you reckon?

@wanda, Wanda, You are a phoney. You just copied the first message and adjusted some few parts. If you have something to say about the N 97, Dont repeat what the others have said, You can just agree with their opinion…
Avoid such silly mistakes…

Please stop this nonsense about X-megapixel cameras.
5 megapixel is optimal number as it has been shown numerous times for digital cameras. Increasing the pixel number while keeping the sensor size constant results in smaller pixel sizes. This has only detrimental effects: noise level is increased. Manufacturers have to resort then to noise filtering which reduces overall resolution and produces artefacts. Overall the effect is in *reduced* picture quality which is crazy. One has to notice that on the high-end prosumer and professional camera side knowledgable people started petitions protesting the increase in the number of pixels. In the pop consumer segment the pixel race continues and the recent crop of 12 megapixel cameras is widely recognized to suffer from decreased picture quality.

i think that u guys did a good job to make the n97 but u should have a 8.7 megapixel. i also want to know if the volume of the n97 speakers is increased or the same as n96 or is the volume is decreased to lower version. i want you guys to make good money at it and also i want you guys to put the price low in New York cause noT that many will afford it if you sell ut for 1,000$ or 800$. i just reccomend first when it comes out put iT on sale

The phone looks ok.
I’m very pleased that they finally made a black version of a phone and not ruin it by combining the black with a silver edge (or lots of silver buttons).
Still, I think the keyboard look kinda crappy. I’ll have to check when it hits stores later this year.
And I pray to god they finally invested in better batteries. I doubt that will be the case (but I’ll keep hoping).
They have some convincing to do if they want me to buy this…

I have been waiting for this phone, about time Nokia went into touch screens, but I think I will be waiting for the N98 (or N99) whichever one is the first to abandon the slide out keyboard input device. Having a slide is like saying we are not confident enough in touch screens. The only effect of these sliders is to at least double the depth of the phone.
