BBC World Service now on S60

LONDON, England – Internet Radio on your mobile has just been given a boost following a deal to put the BBC World Service, BBC Arabic and BBC Rolling News in English on the Nokia Internet Radio Application. Already pre-loaded on some S60 3rd edition devices, the Internet Radio app can also be downloaded from the Nokia site. With the BBC World Service particularly having a global following, this will be a huge boost for Nokia users across the globe.

The app will stream radio over WiFi or over the air (make sure you have the right data plan though). Personally, I haven’t really got into Internet Radio much. I don’t tend to listen to it at my computer, but this might just help change my mind. I’m certainly going to give it a try (watch out for a progress report).

Ruxandra Obreja is Business Development Controller for BBC World Service and commenting on the service said

“I believe this is an innovative agreement, getting BBC exposure on one of the latest digital platforms, giving listeners from across the globe access to our distinctive and compelling content in English and Arabic.”

High praise indeed. Nokia’s own Head of Radio Business, Temmu Tarnanen had this to say on the deal:

“We are excited to have BBC World Service included in the Nokia Internet Radio service. Now millions of people on the move can stay up-to-date with their favourite BBC World Service channels through their Nokia device.”

There’s definitely a lot to be said for adding BBC World Service. It’s world-renowned as a radio service and class-leading in many ways. For a lot of people around the world its considered the de-facto point of access to global news and current affairs. So, what does it mean for you?
