Nokia Locate Sensor video and trials

By Mike on 20 January 2009

HELSINKI, FinlandNokia Locate Sensor has rapidly established itself as one of the most talked-about developments in the mobile realm. We’ve been lucky enough to get hold of a new video from the Nokia Research Center showcasing indoor positioning and Nokia Locate Sensor in action, as well as get info on the trials that are being currently being carried out.

Click through for more info on NRC’s indoor positioning solution and to see it in the wild.

Yesterday we posted a piece on a new paper that NRC published on indoor positioning, and this short video goes some way to fleshing out many of the concepts highlighted. Indoor positioning is being developed using existing Wi-Fi technology and wireless RFID tags, triangulating your position within indoor buildings such as shopping centers. The precision of the set up promises to be incredible, pinning your position or that of any object or location you’ve set up down to a metre or two. So in theory if you’re looking for a particular shop, you could search for it on the directory on your phone and then use your device to point you in the direction and plot it on the map on your handset so you know where to go and precisely how far away it is.

It’s also exciting to discover that trials of NRC’s indoor positioning service are currently being run within 40 buildings worldwide, with loads more coming soon.

Let us know what you think to what you’ve seen of indoor positioning.

All looks good, but one thing is haunting me. As most Wi-Fi connections at airports and shopping centers are secured and you need to pay a fee to get access, so how will Nokia tacle this?
