Nokia 5630 XpressMusic unveiled

By Mike on 10 February 2009

ESPOO, Finland – Nokia has just revealed the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic handset. In the same vein as it’s 5800 XpressMusic sibling the new Nokia 5630 is far from a conventional music phone – a fully fledged member of the S60 family, this slender smartphone has a host of unlikely talents, such as being the slimmest N-Gage device yet at just 12mm thin.

Read on for details of Nokia’s newest music phone and get the full lowdown on its surprising features.

Of course, Nokia has first ensured that the new 5630 XpressMusic ticks the musical boxes. Comes with Music enabled in selected countries, it’s ready to soak up to 3,000 songs into its slender shell via a 4GB microSD memory card that comes in the box. Likewise, its tuneful talents extend to the ’say and play’ feature (first debuted on the 5320 XpressMusic last year), letting you speak the name of an artist of track to automatically play it. Plus, the Nokia 5630 comes loaded with a 3.5mm headphone connector, stereo Bluetooth, FM stereo and Internet radio to wrap up its music credentials. Now here comes the twist…

Alongside those core talents sit some unusual but welcome suspects on the features front. For starters it’s a full blown S60 device with fast HSDPA connectivity, meaning it’s primed to be loaded with apps and able to exploit many of the best Internet services out there, such as widgets (a la the 5800 and upcoming N97), Ovi Share and Nokia Messaging.

Similarly, it throws N-Gage gaming into the mix – only the second time Nokia’s premium gaming platform has been available on a non Nseries device (the 6210 just got there first). However, at just 12mm slim and weighing only 83g, this makes the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic the slimmest and lightest N-Gage gaming device to date.

Another smart addition is the home screen, which features a new Contacts Bar that has a definite widget feel to it – smartly animated, you can scroll through icons for up to 20 contacts and interact with them directly from the home screen.

It doesn’t shirk its responsibilities imaging wise, delivering digital shots via a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and 4x zoom, and recording video, both of which can be uploaded and shared online via Flickr and Share on Ovi. And this is where another of the 5630’s more subtle skills steps into the limelight – as well as being HSDPA enabled, it’s also HSUPA enabled, meaning it can upload data over your network at speeds of up to 2mbps (following in the footsteps of the 6260 slide, Nokia’s first HSUPA phone last November) and making video and photo sharing on the move a significantly faster and more engaging option.

It will go on sale in selected countries in the second quarter of 2009 for around 199 Euros (before the usual taxes and subsidies).

Please tell me you didn’t write Series 60 in the first paragraph… I think a little bit of the S60 marketing team just died (OK, it happens during keynotes to0..). :D

Other than that looks like a very impressive mid range handset. Some of the extras like HSUPA (back ported from OS 9.5 I guess) and UPnP really make it stand out against its competitors.

@Rafe, Heh, they have to contend with me always saying it. Carita charges me a euro every time I let “Series 60″ slip.

if you check the specs this is the first non-autofocus camera that has a digital focus
as in its got autofocus but the lens doesnt move, so should be better than a fixed focus and nearing as good as moving lens autofocus

I hear that it offers EDOF (extended depth of focus)… is this a feature from DxO Labs; and if so, will we be seeing Adaptive Lighting and other stuff from there?

Active standby screen is great- LOVE the contacts feature… though the fact that you can have 20 items in there with this FP2 device makes me really wonder even more what they were thinking with the 4 contact items with my 5800. We can’t even have contacts and app shortcuts together on that miserable standby screen- speaking of which, 6 app shortcuts here, and four on the 5800. Seriously? At any rate, I’d love to see a scrolling setup with the app shortcuts like the contact bar- let us define a few more shortcuts. :-)

Overall, pretty sweet release for an XpressMusic device. Really like the EDOF feature, and would like to hear more about it and (hopefully) other camera features.

    charlie Reply:

@PseudoFinn, The 5800 was the first to really use the active contacts. I think the 5630 is the evolution of that.

Hm, I wonder if they can get it into the 5800 with a SW update. Wouldn’t that be sweet? Especially with all that screen space.

    Reply

    PseudoFinn Reply:

@charlie, Yeah- this new active contact feature would indeed be pretty sweet on the 5800.

Is there someone I can get in contact with to ask some questions about the new EDoF/digital focusing feature?

  5. EDOF Says:

It should come from Tessera and not DXO

  6. Camera Ex. Says:

I heard the full focus feature in this model comes from Tessera

    PseudoFinn Reply:

@Camera Ex., Cool- thanks guys. So are the chances of seeing an OptiML Zoom solution from Tessera in a Nokia handset sometime soon any good? :-0

  7. Manu Says:

EDoF (Extended Depth of Field) does Auto Focus “automatically” without that looping back and forth trying to get the focus right. It should be much better than the normal Auto Focus.

@Manu, Can you tell me its availability in India. Thanks in advance
