By Mike on 17 February 2009

BARCELONA, Spain – Earlier this morning we brought you official news of the new Nokia N86 8MP. Since then we’ve managed to rustle up and cut together a bunch of videos on Nokia’s debut 8 megapixel camera phone. We’ve got a hands-on video of the Nokia N86 8MP in the flesh, along with an interview with one of the key people behind the creation of the new device, plus a rather posh promo video, which more than anything gives you a super detailed look at the handset.

The N86 is too little way too late. It’s just an N85 in a shiny shell with a new set of optics.

By the time it hits the stores it will be very outdated!

Why isn’t it a touchscreen like it’s direct competitors? This seems to be a crazy move.

    dummyuser Reply:

@nothappy, Agreed 100%, it will probably still sell well, but it’s not going to take away marketshare from the other smartphone vendors, it’s the N82 replacement.

so u can also say N96 is just an N95 with a bit difference..!

@nothappy, Your looking at this the wrong way
this is noia’s answer to the sony erricson c905 one of the only other camera phones to exceed eight megapixels.
Whereas the cybershot dons a high res camera made by its father sony, High res nokia phones come with a camera built by the leading HD camera manufacturer in the world, Carl Zeiss.

This phone is not a touch screen because people are just geting bored of touch screens, the novelty has inevitably worn off. They are slow, fiddly, easy to break and ridiculously expensive to repair.

In a time of economic crises, people are going to parks and fields, looking for low budget ways to socialse, what better way to capture the hot summer moments, than with eight megapixels of pure german genius. And at a time when social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace are running riot throughout the web, and even television, this is a phone that will shake the foundations of the evergrowing world, that exists behind our computer screens, where uploading and sharing photos, is the new way of communication.

    This phone is brilliant.

It all sounds great but i have an N95 and when you record video where the surrounding noise is loud it comes out so distorted when played back which is really fustrating, appart from it always slidding open and ringing the last person i spoke to, its great!!!!

I’m getting a bit frustrated here. All I want is a decent replacement for my N82, a ‘photocentric’ handset with a xenon flash is that too much to ask? I know it’s a 3rd gen LED flash, better optics and performance in low light, but I still seriously doubt it’s going to be as good as a Xenon flash.

From what I can see on websites, forums and blogs there’s plenty of people who are in the same boat as me. Has Nokia going to bring out any more phones with Xenon flashes or is it going to be LED only from now on?

    @Jambo,

Hey same thing here when we can see a real updated version of photographic king N82….. (8MP with a real xenon flash..)

  5. Asi Says:

Just one question, does it make those ridiculously embarrassing camera sounds all the Nokias are making these days? If it’s supposed to replace a camera, you should know that my stand-alone camera doesn’t make crappy noises every time I focus or take a picture.

I’d consider giving this phone a try, but I’ll be honest. If it beeps when I take a picture, back to the retailer it goes.

  6. Jacinta Says:

No Xenon flash, and no optical mouse. Until Nokia incorporates both these things, they won’t out-do the Samsung i8510!

Nokia continue to drip-feed their technology onto the market. Despite being a big Nokia fan, I jumped at the chance to own the Samsung model because they didn’t hold back at all.

This is what I’d expect of cutting edge technology, that it should be cutting edge and offer something new. All Nokias phones are variations on the same thing, without seeming to merge all the best bits into one model.

    8MP – so what??

Also, I can’t say it enough – unless you’re using a touch-screen device, the only way to go is to have an optical mouse! Makes surfing the internet a dream! I wouldn’t go back.

Come on Nokia, you’ve done so well in the past – push the boat out a bit more!

  7. Mo Says:

Why nokia is making the same kind of model’s from the last 2 years…?
can’t make a handset without slide.

    Reply

  8. Mo Says:

I think nokia is the best but every slide model’s r like same…
they can implement some idea’s by the eseries handset, like E66.
E66 is the best designed handset so far !
nokia can make a model like E66 but without slide,
it will be really great to use a handset without slide.
E66 has a nice attractive body, shining device with great finishing, slim etc.
if 5mp,Xenon flash will be added in new version of E66,which will be of without slide then it will be the most selling handset !

Well, despite of being a fan of nokia, nokia seems to be late in their mobile phones.Samsung and Sony Ericsson Released greater phones.Samsung with their inov8 and sony ericsson with it’s C905(8 m.p,xenon and video light. And their IDOU,it has a 12.1 mega pixel camera, large touch screen,a little slim and is music edition.
Come on nokia!what is happening with your designs!Carl Zeiss is great for your camera phones but Replace Led to xenon flashes.Led light is weak!it can’t brighten up places like xenon’s!
And almost all of your phones is slide!make a change!
It is hard to admit but,i think Sny Eicsson is now in 1st place right now.
    More luck to Nokia!
Nokia should make their phones more stronger and better!

guys, why do u think this phone is weak? we all agree that xenon flash was important , but how about the other features?
how about feature pack 2? how about the volume which is about 84cc ? the 8 gb memory? the usb charging? the oled screen? even the camera is not that bad, lets give this phone another look and we will find out its more than just great device, and I found out that its volume is more higher than the xpress music phones which is about 48 – 84 cc !
the phone is awesome , and what I like about it is the new nokia maps and flash light verion, and sp2 is also great s60, and anyway I like the slide phones.
and if we came to n82, this phone is rubbish, except the camera, the battery is weak, the sound is very low, the cpu is too slow, even sometimes it shuts down by its self ! trust me guys n82 is rubbish, and if anyone wanted to buy it, he better change into another phone ( maybe 5800 xm ). and if anyone want to know information about n82 he can contact me on:

HAHAHA… i laugh at you guys… “uuh its so weak, It doesent even have Xenon flash, rather have the SE C905″ HAHAHA, The C905 is WAAAAAAY weaker than the N86, and you know it. The only thing is it got Xenon, and who really gives a fuck ? Are you gonna publish your pictures in Photo Monthly or something ?

But lets leave out the OLED screen, hardned glass surface, metal casing, carl zeiss lens, variabel shutter speed and focal lenght, and dual slide and you have a C905 except the 18 bit (bbvvvhhhHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) screen. Ooh and lets not forget that the camera is some crappy shit, they are not even usi9ng the same optics as Sonys cameras, which by the way is the same as Nokia N86 8MP. So what are you really gonna use your xenon flash for ? Lighting the headlight on your car ?

    Reply

    MrT Reply:

I agree with Blah, if you’re serious about taking good photos, don’t use a camera phone! They all suck. Get a descent point and shoot if you don’t want to carry a DSLR. Cameras are only attached to phones for convenience. You just can’t compare any camera phone now to a stand alone camera – yet. So stop complaining!

I think this is better than the N97. I’ve heard the N97 doesn’t handle very well, is large, bulky and the touchscreen still isn’t up there with the iPhone, apparently the QWERTY keyboard isn’t much good either!!! This phone looks perfect with a good camera and all the N series functionality without the need for messy touchscreens – furthermore, it’s bound to be a lot cheaper than the N97, maybe free on 18 month £30 contracts, the N97 is only free if you’re shelling out £45 a month.

I hope that all the new phones from now on will have 3.5 mm standard headphones jack so that you can use your favorite headphones without any hassle.

Other thing what makes me mad, is that when I see new camera phone, what I really like, but there is no lens cover, that is really pain in the ass, even if that material is scratch resistant you still have finger prints on the lens what makes photos less crispy and accurate..

so pleas Nokia make your phones with standard headphone jack insert and pleas always when you adding camera, do that properly and build in lens cover

those r two most important things for my when I’m deciding what phone to choose

I’m going for a N86. I just got rid of my Samsung Jet. It was fun for a while but didn’t make it any better of a user experience for me and I had problems using it in direct sunlight, (a touch screen phone when you can’t see the screen is useless. Also the phone kept unlocking itself in my pocket and calling random people! The N86 will bring me back to a good solid reliable phone that I get loads of functionality out of, don’t have to worry about slipping it in it’s little case lest I scratch the huge screen, great camera, (I don’t know why every one is so hung up on Xenon, from what I’ve read 3rd gen dual led is almost as good and when you consider it’s improved low light performance there will be less times when you have to use the flash at all! What if you want to do video in low light Xenon is no good for that, plus with the wide angle lens you;ll be able to get even more of your friends in from closer up, Finally xenon really zaps the battery, ask any one who uses an N82) I also looked at the N97 but having the Jet put me off touch screens and Nokia’s implementation is not meant to be as good. Also I thought it was bulky and the slide out key board is not something I would use a lot. It would not be fun having to slide that thing out every time I just wanted to send a quick txt, you can’t beat a standard key pad for true one handed operation and for the extra cost I could get a net book with a sim slot. The E71 is cool but the camera is crap. Bottom line the N86 is a great traditional phone (I’ve also heard it’s boring, have you ever seen a touch phone their all the same!) I think as well megapixels and xenon aside when you take everything into count it’s the best camera in a phone out there at this moment in time.

This phone’s great! Everything’s superb! Although one thing about its camera, when you take pictures of animals with the flash on, they have major red eyes and using the ‘red eye reduction’ mode of the camera isnt much help. Even if you’d edit the photo in the camera itself, the red eye reduction option doesnt work. So everytime I have to take pictures of animals with my phone, I have to do it when there’s enought light to have a good shot.
