Skype to be integrated into Nokia devices
By JBC on 17 February 2009
BARCELONA, Spain – Nokia and Skype announced plans this morning to fully integrate Skype into select Nokia devices. Kicking off with the Nokia N97, Skype will be part of the address book in the device, enable users to easily see when their Skype contacts are online. It’ll also enable them to use 3G and WiFi to make and receive free Skype to Skype voice calls.
Skype will be rolled out on other devices after the Nokia N97 goes live in the third quarter. New Nokia N97 devices will have it pre-installed, whilst early versions will be able to get it through a software upgrade. Other select Nseries devices are also likely to come with integrated Skype functionality which includes Skype contacts, Chat, VoIP and Presence.
Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer said
“Collaborating closely with Nokia to preload and integrate our software onto their devices will benefit the many Nokia customers who already use Skype, as it makes Skype easily accessible and simple to use on the go. It will also bring Skype new users who love Nokia’s Symbian Series 60 experience.”
Meanwhile Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nokia Nseries said
“With more than 400 million Skype users worldwide, the integration of Skype on Nokia Nseries mobile computers is a significant step in bringing converged Internet experiences from the desktop to the world’s most advanced mobile computer.”
The first Skype-enabled Nokia N97 devices will be rolling out from the third quarter. Using Skype on your S60 device isn’t new, but the level of integration with the service and the device is. Skype won’t be running as a separate application, but actually plugged directly into your contacts, making the service a sleek and neat integration.

Do u know..that FRING on Iphone on AT&T 3G network is allowed to make VOIP calls like Skype -skype..or fring -fring..They gave permission to Fring dev to make call using their 3G network. So whats the point of getting banned?

Excellent news! Will the preinstalled software on Nokia phones be the Lite version of Skype (http://skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/mobile/) or the whole enchilada?

What does this “free Skype to Skype voice calls” via “3G” mean here from the user perspective? I guess free with flat rate internet access via 3G?

C’mon Skype…are so many N97 users out there that are waiting for what you promised to become reality…so can you please let us know at least if it will ever be released or you are going to ditch the idea all together? It will be nice to give us a more realistic date, not like when you promised back in February that it will be the third quarter and we have just entered the fourth quarter of the yr and nothing not even a word from either Skype or Nokia. Thanks

Where is my Skype? It is now the end of the 3rd quarter and I am stuck in Nimbuzz and Fring world. I paid full price because we were told we would get Skype, where is it?

Tomorrow at midnight it will be 2010 and STILL no Skype for our N97!!
Why do companies promise things and then fail to produce? I think companies promise things like this just to get you to buy their phones.
