Nokia bags two awards at Mobile World Congress

By JBC on 18 February 2009

BARCELONA, SpainNokia Sports Tracker bagged the top prize for Best Mobile Internet Service whilst Nokia was awarded the first ever award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The scale and commitment of Nokia’s global environmental program contributed to it winning the best in the industry prize, along with Nokia’s commitment to considering the environment across its entire product range.

Accepting the Environmental Award Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said,

“It is an honor to accept this on behalf of the thousands of Nokia people who have made sustainable, environmentally sensitive practices an integral part of our day to day business. With more than a billion people using Nokia phones globally, we feel we have a responsibility to make a difference.”

Nokia’s first phone recycling scheme started in 1997 and today operates in 85 countries around the world. Initiatives to reduce power consumption include reducing charger ‘no load’ energy consumption by 90 per cent and adding alerts to remind people to unplug their chargers once the battery is full. Other initiatives highlighted by the GSMA include making up to 80 per cent of any Nokia device recyclable and phasing out the use of materials such as PVC.

Nokia Sports Tracker fended off all comers to take the Best Mobile Internet Service award. Launched in July last year, Nokia Sports Tracker has been downloaded more than 2.5 million times to date. Used to monitor ad track exercise, the app keeps an eye on your fitness levels and works both on your phone and your computer.

We’ve always been fans of both Nokia’s environmental initiatives and Nokia Sports Tracker here on Conversations and it’s great to see the teams behind them getting recognised in this way. Three cheers, we say!
