Nokia 5630 XpressMusic boasts green credentials

By JBC on 20 February 2009

GLOBAL – Although it was announced last week, the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic has since been flexing its green muscles to the crowds in Barcelona. We caught up with Christina Korhonen, senior manager for Environmental Affairs at Nokia to find out more about why this little music diva warrants an eco peek. Up to 80 per cent recyclable, the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic brings together a bunch of little features which add up to something of an impressively green package. The devil is frequently in the detail and it’s touches like having a black and white manual printed on recycled paper, along with a 100 per cent recyclable reduced-size sales package that help this device stand out.

But it doesn’t stop there. Open the box and you’re treated to an energy efficient micro USB charger. The smart bit though is the power-saving screen. Thanks to an ambient light sensor which monitors the amount of natural light available, the screen and keyboard will only use as much power as genuinely required, the device adapting itself to whatever situation it’s in. We wrote before about sensor technology and this is a really smart feature we hope to see in more devices over time.

Delve deeper and Nokia’s new Green Explorer widget comes pre-installed. This new online service is packed with tips and tricks for travellers wanting to take a greener route and offers users the ability to share their experience and knowledge too. The widget is accompanied by the WWF calculator, so you can keep tabs on your carbon footprint and if it all gets too much, we:offset is included too, so you can offset any CO2 generated if you must take a flight.

There’s a bunch of other environmental stuff to take a look at so put the kettle on and settle in for three minutes with Christina. Don’t forget to let us know what you think below too.
