Nokia Image Space update and video
By Charlie on 20 February 2009
BARCELONA, Spain – We’ve written about Nokia Research Center’s Image Space project before. It’s a photo sharing service that creates a navigable, immersive interface to images, maps, and video. Using data from a phone’s GPS, compass, and tilt-sensor, the service builds a 3D representation of the images.
What’s new is not only the ability to hear sounds and see videos, but a new 3D Point Cloud View that aggregates photos from a single object into a very cool three-dimensional model of all the images. Well, you have to see it to get it, so I’ve made a video (below) of Severi Uusitalo demonstrating this and all the other cool stuff in Nokia Image Space.
More after the jump.

Very impressive, and quite useful too, in many situations, from a professional standpoint, to a personal one also.

Looks similar to Microsoft Photosynth where they can stitch photos together to create a 3D gallery reconstruction of the place. How does this differ from Microsoft Photosynth?

@Alvin Chin, one of the differentiating aspects is the ability to provide an immersive navigation experience even in the case of a sparse network of photos, where you have no overlaps among photos, as is the case in many times in real life. Our concept also starts from social collaboration aspect and tight map integration. I’m sending you a personal email as well, as you seem to be a company internal.

too difficult, no practical use. Won’t be long before these types of “activities” will be shut down due to decreased profit. Bye bye..
