Nokia 5800 XpressMusic updated and improved

By Mike on 30 March 2009

GLOBAL – The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been a device that’s triggered a lot of great debate and opinion here on Conversations recently, so today’s news of a significant software update adds an exciting twist to the question we posed a couple of weeks ago: Is Nokia 5800 the best handset Nokia has ever launched?.

Read on to find out exactly what this new software update promises for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and what improvements it ushers aboard Nokia’s much talked-about touchscreen device.

Install the software update and you’ll be rewarded with a faster user interface and speedier download times. Plus the second camera in the 5800 now supports still image capture, and a burst mode that enables you to fire off a series of shots back-to-back by simply holding down the photo trigger. Another smart addition is the inclusion of a Mobile Dictionary with voice playback, using text-to-speech tech and supporting 38 languages.

But possibly our favourite addition (tucked away at the bottom of the list) is the Applications Update. This new feature lets you keep any apps on your 5800 XpressMusic automatically updated. So rather than having to check for updates manually, your device can remain filled with the latest versions of your favourite apps without you having to keep tabs on each bite-size bit of software. A great feature, no?

Being able to get more from a handset you already own is clearly important, and something that Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President for Devices at Nokia, highlights.

“The update includes great improvements in the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. As mobile devices become more and more advanced, additional features and new functionalities are easy to install to the existing device. We recommend people to take advantage of the new features and upgrade their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and get more from their existing device”

If you own a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, head over to the Nokia Software Update website and download your free software update.

Isn’t this just the v20 update that was released almost 2 months ago in some countries?

All of the features mentioned in the press release were added in the v20 update?

Can you update your article to confirm if it’s v20 or something newer?

ROFL – Have you actually run the software updater for the 5800, it reports that the phone can only be updated via FOTA and not via the desktop (at least as of last week when I tried for the 100th time). Of course you are now at the mercy of FOTA actually working….

Nokia have turned OTA updates into a shambolic mess for this phone. By releasing this in various different patches in different countries and different times it has created a distinctly unpleasant flavour with customers (head over to the support forums for the low down).

If Apple and Microsoft can manage to roll out OTA updates all at once that actually work I don’t see why its so difficult for Nokia to do it.

@Quietness, Sorry if there’s been any confusion. I simply ran the story because of the official announcement that was put out this week via press release regarding the software update and new features – the press release refers to the software version 20.0.012, which has been available in http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate. The update includes some smart improvements in the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and we wanted to make sure that the update didn’t go unnoticed. Of course Nokia regularly releases software updates for many device models, so stay tuned for the next update!

Well I have tried updating to the new software and then my handset started playing up, vertical lines appeared when rebooting and to get the cellphone up and running I had to turn it on at least 3 times, in 2 weeks I had 3 handsets.
The first 2 ones I updated, but not the 3rd one, I’ll wait till the next update is available.
