Let’s discuss Nokia’s Ovi Store
By Mike on 03 April 2009
GLOBAL – Nokia is set to open the doors to the Ovi Store next month. Let’s not be meek about it, this is a big deal for Nokia and will mark a milestone in the evolution of how we digest and engage with mobile apps.
So here’s the story so far and what we know: Nokia is launching a dedicated mobile application store, the Ovi Store, in May 2009, it’s already signed up some heavyweight content partners (and Heroes), and developers and publishers are already beginning to submit exciting apps, ready to be sucked down onto our devices via the Ovi Store in a few weeks’ time.
Now let’s discuss Nokia’s upcoming Ovi Store further.
We know when it’s coming and the function it’s coming to perform, but what are the big issues you’d like to discuss, what are your opinions on the impact the Ovi Store could have on the mobile world, and are there any insights you’d like to share? We want to hear it all, and kickstart the discussion here.

Hi,
Can we please clear up whether the new Symbian Foundation will be distributing apps for S60 (Foundation OS) and if so how that will fit in with the Ovi Store.
Thanks.

First, I have submitted myself to be able to publish but I haven’t uploaded any app yet, if you there are people doing it..it’s weird.
Finally, I hope more people come and join Nokia when Ovi Store starts, because we all know S60 is loosing market for other platforms, so maybe this way Nokia’s owners will visit the store and get excited about all the apps and other stuff they can get to their mobiles.

My main concern about the Ovi Store is the need for the applications to be Symbian Signed, surely that’ll put a lot of the good freeware beyond the reach of it…
Since Symbian 9 came out I’ve been complaining about Symbian Signed (and got all my S60 devices hacked), now it’s the time to see if I’m wrong or right.

Fernando, on the contrary! Ovi Store can STILL allow freeware available and I HOPE to see them there. Nokia, or Symbian Signed should consider apps meant for freeware to be FREE to be signed – since the core OS is free to developers to use and manufacturers to use and augment.
However, non signed apps lead to device hacking – the need for it – and the free distrubition of hacked apps. Many of the younger crowd has no clue just how BAD NGage QD games became when developer company’s found out that their $14-30US games where hacked in the 1000’s and enjoyed on non-Ngage QD S60 devices that had more power = 6620 anyone (that was the workhorse of the old gaurd). This was huge piracy and became a litany of developers walking away from Nokia for not just gaming. Symbian-Signed is THE reason why S60 3rd Edition exists and became so successful so quickly!!!

I’m quite disappointed because seems that ovi store will not provide any kind of license management system.
From the developers point of view this means that developers will be forced to distribuite fully unlocked apps, which of course exposes applications to piracy.
Moreover, almost all of the commercial applications currently available on the market, are using a protection based on the IMEI and without a license management system will not be possibile to distribuite those apps through Ovi Store.

So far I’m disappointed with Nokia and Ovi. It seems that Ovi is to my phone as the iStore is to the iPhone – a means to sell things.
Even downloading the thing is a chore. It seems to take ages, but they don’t say how big it is before download begins. The program that is initially downloaded is just an installer. Why not separate the components and give us a choice of what we need or want?
I’m also finding there aren’t a lot of S60 applications available, most of it is old rubbish. I think there are too many restrictions, which is why people are not writing stuff for it.

Hi,
I am not a programmer or anything, just a consumer, but I can say that:
Why does every company want to build their own “media manage system”?
Everybody who connects their phone to their computer has already 1. a picture viewer/editor
2. a music player
3. a webbrowser
4. a videoplayer on their pc.
It is such a pain, that we consumers get stuffed with all that unneccessary software, eating the ressources of our pc’s…
It’s just like buying a new laptop…all you get is a HDD full of Bull…
cheers!

I agree with Marco.
I received an invitation from Nokia Ovi to add my application to the Ovi store in March-09. The very first thing I enquired about was the ability to lock my application to the device IMEI (at the very least to prevent casual piracy). I emailed Ovi 3 times between March and May and never received any reply. I have no idea whether the situation has since changed in the last 10 months.
