Touring with the Nokia N86 in Helsinki
By Charlie on 11 June 2009
HELSINKI, Finland – Yesterday, the Nokia N86 8MP officially started selling in shops around the globe. To mark the occasion (and to take advantage of the great weather), I went into Helsinki to take some videos and photos with my brand-spanking-new N86.
As an aside, I was a big fan of the Nokia N85. The N86 is similar, but has a ton of new tweaks, including a super eight megapixel camera, so it instantly became my new favorite (we wrote about it back in February).
In any case, decide for yourself. I took some photos and posted them below for you to check out. Just remember, I’m no pro photographer (or videographer) so take that into account when you comment on the quality of the photos (in other words, be nice).

I had to sell my n85 due to the fact that i could not see the display or use it for photography in direct sunlight hence why i do not want to get the n86 which uses the same oled display and screen.

Any chance for some indoor and nighttime shots with and without flash?
I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed in how aggressive the jpg processing appears to be.
Also, does the camera shutter sound in silent mode? That’s a pet peeve of mine the E71 fails pretty miserably on.

@seaotter02,
this is not a “problem” of the E71 smartphone. It’s a legal matter in some of the markets. Certain national laws prohibit the use of “quiet shutter” in such devices.

@Kensai,
Those laws don’t exist in my country, so yes, it’s a problem. It limits what you can do with your camera phone and where you can use it – ie, not in museums and never for candid shots of friends and family. Additionally, Nokia has gone out of its way to make the sounds unbearably loud compared to other camera phones.
I personally can’t buy another Nokia phone knowing I won’t be able to use the sound-crippled camera.

@Kensai,
BTW, I’ve already gone through all the ridiculous excuses Nokia fanboys make for Nokia’s horrible camera focus and shutter sounds in the comment section here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/9897_Nokia_N86_8MP_is_now_shipping.php

@seaotter02, I do not get any camera shutter sounds (I turn off Warning sounds in General profile)

@Charlie,
That is fantastic news! Thanks for the update – I was still debating getting the NAM version when it came out, but knowing that Nokia’s treating this as a camera should be treated (with the ability to take candid shots) is the deciding factor for me.
Again, thanks for the info – it might seem petty to some, but being able to use my camera phone w/o embarrassingly poor quality and loud, obnoxious sounds is a big issue for me – and hearing that the N86 isn’t crippled with these forced sounds pretty much made my day.

Is ther a chance that Nokia could take the same pix wed other 8mp cams Sony Erikson/Samsung so they can prove that N86 is the best mobile cam this year!!

Yes ,the camera quality is not much progressive in Nokia Phone lines now. I am disappointed with N97 Camera Quality ,even thouth it also MPX 5 ,N97 is not better as N95 8Gb ,what happened to nokia ? . If you wanna you can see the video and camera quality test of N97 with N95 and other phones in my blog. Thanks

Looks like the camera is indeed a nice camera, but I would like to see varying amounts of light and objects in pictures taken with this camera. In other words I would have like to see a picture or two of a relatively close object in a low light situation (like a person in a bar or a statue at night), and another one or two that are low light pictures of an area at night (like the city skyline from your hotel window at night). Not only are these common style pictures for the average camera user, they are also going to show the flash and light detection of the camera. I will be interested to see how these more internal functions on the phone stack up against a conventional digital camera.

The N86 has interested me for a while, ever since the press pack pretty much leaked the phone and no actual video announcement at MWC (still suprised at that).
Working in mobiles many people come up to me and say they want a phone because of the camera so they would choose the Pixon12 or the Satio because of the 12mp camera.
Only when the gadget fans get hold of the phone and they see the work gone into software, lens creation and the work that goes into getting the best overall quality the real results start to come out.
It’s not all about numbers…. its what you do with them that counts and on that basis Nokia are on to a winner!
I want one the SECOND I am able to get my hands on one, especially as I use my camera phone as my main camera

Folks,
I am glad you are all quite interested and want to see more a developed photo series. But I am not a photographer, so I think it’s better for some photo site to do the right range of comparisons.
Sorry for that.
Does anyone know of any such comparison out there?
Tchau,
Charlie

Nice pictures. I’m taking snaps all the time now with my Nokia N95. I love all the things that mobile phones do now. Question is this – If I am not going to enlarge and print my pictures, is it still worth having an 8MP camera? On that basis, is the Nokia N97 just as good?
How long is the the OLED screen guaranteed to last for?

@Gary H,
I am partial to 8MP. Can’t help you decide there.
