Nokia E72 unveiled – pics and video
By JBC on 15 June 2009
SINGAPORE – The all new Nokia E72 boasts a host of new features including optical scrolling and a five-megapixel camera. Building on the success of the E71, the E72 takes the very best of Nokia’s most successful QWERTY device and makes it even better. The super-slim 10mm frame has been refined with some sleek design touches and inside the device is treated to a range of user interface improvements too.
The optical navigation key makes scrolling through emails a breeze and also helps bounce around the menus quickly and easily. The camera has been upgraded to a full five megapixels and heavy data users will love the support for up to 10.2Mbps connections over HSDPA. The audio jack has also had the upgrade treatment with 3.5mm jack now appearing on the top of the device.
Nokia Messaging is also on board (with a lifetime license) and now supports access and easy set up for Instant Messaging accounts including Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, amongst others. Email set up is even easier than before through Nokia Messaging, Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler.
Sound quality on calls is improved with the addition of active noise cancellation and navigation gets a boost with the addition of a digital compass. Maps is also integrated and comes with a lifetime walk and 10 days of turn-by-turn navigation, if activated within the first three months. You don’t need to be worried about getting caught in the dark either – a single press on the spacebar key will activate the torch!
The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of €350 before taxes and subsidies. Find out more from Nokia.com.

What does a life time license for Nokia messaging mean ?
Would it be free even after the so called trial period ?

A decent upgrade giving us what we’ve wanted from the E71 after 6mths of owning it; this comes in at 1yr after the E71.
* Where is USB Charging support?
* Where is Blackberry messaging support, still negotiating?
* Will Lotus Traveler now being integrated, will this & MfE support 2 stage logon via RSA Tokens?
* Will this support quality pictures!!@!!?????

I don’t understand why Nokia still uses conventional charging. Nokia should use usb charging only. It’s not only reduce the cost, but also possible to make the phone smaller.

@Albert G,
conventional charging may STILL be necessary for business target market to which the E-Series is catered for. There are still back-country or rural areas where a PC/PS3/XBox360/Wii is not available for USB charging. Airports … if your devices’ battery is low or dead you can find an outlet quicker than a PC that is free for as long as 30mins or more if you’re awaiting connecting flights.

@Donny,
Ever heard of 110/240 socket USB chargers? same form factor as conventional charger but you can use it ALSO for other devices with micro-USB plug, isn’t that much more clever?
And 2 Nokia; make the micro-USB connector central on “the feet” please. (so gadget suppliers can develop cheap desk stands.
About the feet; please let it be possible to let the phone “stand” on its “feet” i.o.w, that the phone could be set vertical on a flat surface.
Put also the IR on the top, so when in a hotel room you could operate a TV set with 3rd party software as a remote.

Looks sweet, but as my E71 is only a few months old it’s much to young to be replaced.
I wish Nokia would learn just a little bit from Apple and offer the E72 Firmware for E71 users. Why do I have to buy new Hardware everytime a new Software comes out?

@enkei, Apple only does that to make application from the iPhone app store compatible on the widest range of phones it can. Because the Ovi Store is still such a small part of Nokia’s business, they have no incentive to do the same. They need you to buy a new phone.

why cant Nokia make the screens little larger. 2.4″ is very small for this kind of device. Though it looks good the enhancements are too quick and too shorts in comparison with the most successful E71.

Nokia should do it the Apple way.
Provide this new software for older phones like E71.
Even the first iPhones gets the new 3.0 firmware.

That’s how I see it. I use a E71 on the regular, and have been pleased. But, I think that this E72 should have been, and could have been, what the e72 is. At least as far as the 5MP camera and 3.5mm jack. I like seeing the N and E series Nokia’s move closer together. I don’t understand the need to separate them so much. Many of you say that Enterprise users have no need for a good camera. I feel that some do, others just want it. I’m one that wants it. I want a device that does it all, not multiple devices. I think what should separate the E and N series is the pre loaded software, and possibly build quality.
Let the E series come with MS Office Editing nativity, along with other software to support business needs. Avoid the bloatware in the E series, but allow a owner to download it if they like. E Series should have higher build quality and the best available battery life. E series should have more timeless and classic appearances than N series. The price points could be higher, with less churn.
Let N series come loaded with with all the Social Networking, Direct photo upload, and other stuff. They don’t need native MS Office Support, but should allow it to be Downloaded. The could be built with less metal then E series, and have lower price points. They should be less expensive, and have higher turn over.
BlackBerry Support needs to come back in the E series! If you (Nokia) build better hardware (which you should,) and include your software (which should be better) what do you risk besides converting others to you system. I need to have BlackBerry Messager for my work, so I have to have a BlackBerry, or a old Nokia that supports it. I can’t buy a new Nokia device that works for me, and I know their are MANY others like me. At some point some manufactures are going to have a device that meets my needs enough that I will carry one device, I hope it is you. But if I don’t change jobs, or you don’t bring back BlackBerry support, it won’t be a Nokia.
Maybe I’m wrong, I sure some of you will tell me I am. I’d just like to see Nokia bring their focus in on the consumer and meeting the consumer needs. I feel that they are starting to lose some of that focus, buy looking over their shoulder at the competition. I understand loosing market share and profit margins can case a panic, and the first reaction is to say “what are they (the competition) doing?” It simple, they are focusing on consumer needs and filling the void left in your offerings. It seems to me that Nokia of late has been very reactive, and less pro active on their handset side, maybe it’s just me. I feel like Nokia is doing a lot of things to say “We’ve got that too” or, “We can do that” instead of “No one else has ______ like we do” or “What consumers really want and need is _______, let’s do it, and do it the best way possible.” I want to seem them break out, break ahead, and give us ALL something that makes us say “How did I ever live without this?” I think Nokia has a lot to offer, I own their stock, use their products, and hope to see improvements. They’ve come along way from a paper company, I want to see them go further still.
Anyhow, all that is way off topic. E72 is better than E71, and I will likely end up buying one as soon as the come down $50 off the launch price. I very much enjoy my E71, and having an improved one will be nice. As of now, no manufacture has a device that meets all my needs.

@thomwithah,
RIM is not going with BBConnect any longer. Like the 1yr long development for WinMo professional/Standard devices, they’ll be developing BlackBerry Suite – a complete GUI layer that contains just about anything a BB does with the look and feel – protected against the rest of the device but can also remote lock/wipe/ITPolicy updates/etc onto that native device’s OS/GUI. This is BAD for the competition like HTC/WinMo/Nokia’s S60 units. They’ll have to have something REALLY compelling for a business to use that BBSuite over Symbian/WinMo and use their existing BES infrastructure. To use it with BIS is just simply a matter of personal taste and brings to the plate the question WHY do you want a BB GUI over another platform for personal use?! Seems more like overkill unless you must have BBMessenger which to me isn’t much of a deal. I know what it does and I troubleshoot BB’s for over 3yrs now – with BES Admin previously 1.5yrs ago.

So far so good. I just wish that it will recharge via USB. And that 5MP camera better be good or I would pray for a camera-free version (which I know is impossible). All E-Series cameras have been crap so far, so I am keeping my expectations low for the E72 camera. But so far, so good!

Though I have had my E71 since January, I’ll go out on a limb and upgrade to the NAM version of this phone. The fact that Nokia did listen to the consumer (more or less); adding the 3.5 mm jack, increasing internal memory, using FP2, etc.
By the way, why do I need an iPhone? I DON’T!

This phone is awesome. Guess this is one of the best qwertys ever made. certain improvements would be
1. Instead of 15 FPS, they should have made it 30 FPS camera.
2. This looks more like E63. They should have stuck with E71 design.
3. There is a 3.5 mm jack, but no video out facility.
I would never consider this as a dealbreaker. Maybe something nokia should look in to.. I am getting this phone for sure. I was going to get N97 but changed my mind…

I am an Apple fan; since 1989… and yet no iPhone since in this country sending SMS is no. 1 way of communicating. So I love the E71. I am a photographer… camera is crap… let’s hope the E72 will be better, but I have no hope really that it will be as good as some of their competitors. The interface: terrible.. I’m always confused where to go to and where I came from. I assume I am used to the Mac user’s friendly approach…
But… I still might buy he E72 because of it’s keyboard and compact and solid design. But… by the time tis one will arrive others might have come with better options?!? Untill then… no promises Nokia!

The E72 is lookin’ nice with the bump up in specs. Lookin forward to getting my hands on this. Although I hope that when the E72 hits the NAM market that it supports T-Mobile 3G network (AWS 1700/2100 bands). Wishful thinking? Most likely, but I hope to see future Nokia phone devices that hit the NAM market give us some alternative options besides ATT’s 3G network.
Nokia take a look at this link: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?nokia043. You got some US TMobile fans petitioning you to make phones that take advantage of the carrier’s 3G network.

I really believe the e71 to be the finest phone Nokia has ever made. The e72 seems to be an excellent refinement of what was already a fantastic phone. I’ll be purchasing one (or more) the day it is released. I hope Nokia continue their excellent work in this direction. I believe these phones shame anything Blackberry has to offer, and have secured Nokia’s position as the clear leader in the QWERTY smartphone category. The build-quality and form factor (thin) are unmatched. The e-series’ success is proof Nokia has been listening to consumer demand in this form-factor, something I can’t say regarding their touchscreen efforts (resistive? in 2009? a stylus?). Keep up the excellent work, Nokia!!!

I would be lying if i said i was not tempted to get a E72. I have normally been more of an NSeries person but the E71, E75 have started to turn that around and the E72 looks to be even better.
Now the camera is at a respectable 5.0 megapixels and has the ESeries build this might be the phone for me.
Just hope its an EARLY Q3 launch i.e. July

Lot of buzz about E72.
Great enhancements.
Best enhancements I liked, over E71
===================================
1. Optical scrolling (E71 D pad sucks when scrolling web pages)
2. 3.5 mm Audio jack
3. More internal memory than E71 (but not enough compared to competition)
4. 4GB memory card included in “whats in the box” – as per Nokia forums
5. USB Charging (along with traditional pin)
6. Supposedly much better battery life – need to check how it performs with 3G.
Few things that Nokia should seriously consider
===============================================
1. Even if Nokia ties up with any carrier (lot of posts say ATT), Nokia should not compromize on what Nokia wants to offer to the users. E71 was sold in US by ATT – it has full of ATT crap filled in it. Some features of Nokia are supressed (removed by ATT). Nokia should not get into such agreements on E72.
ATT sold iPhone but iPhone does not have a flavor of ATT except for one of the menu items somewhere hidden in the settings. Why should Nokia compromize ?
2. Side volume buttons can do a lot more than just volume.. Example: it can work for vertical scrolling in many places like browser, contacts screen, email inbox scrolling, messages etc.
3. 3.5 mm could be AV Out for Video
Nokia should improve on their help manuals for every feature that they have to offer…
Release date – I read in few posts that October 12th is the date… believe it ? wait and see…
It is still much awaited phone…
Nokia… hurry up…

To NOKIA: I hope you guys know that, you r losing the smartphone market to BB, HTC and Iphone. If you keep delaying this its gonna hit you more. Gone are the days when people just stick with you for a mobile. Now its aplenty in the market to choose from.
