Pass the Parcel presents the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic!
By Charlie on 15 June 2009
SINGAPORE – It’s done! The last layer of the parcel has been removed and it’s a phone! A Nokia 5530 XpressMusic to be precise. You guys all knew something was up when those last layers were revealed.
Taking its cue from the Nokia 5800, this music and entertainment device has a full touch interface and a new home screen and Contacts Bar – all in a sightly smaller and sleeker package. This device not only brings the great media handling that one comes to expect from an XpressMusic phone, but the new Contacts bar brings your people to the forefront.
In addition to being revealed in Pass the Parcel, the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is on show at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today. Read on for more detail on this product and the Pass the Parcel winner.
The scoop on the newcomer
I know you all want the skinny on the 5530, but you already know it from the game. Yes, this phone has a large touch screen with tactile feedback (I like to say it touches you back) and no physical keys; a 3.2-megapixel camera and LED flash; Bluetooth, WiFi, and EDGE for all your connection needs; a music player for all the stuff you download from the Nokia Music Store; widescreen video playback at 640×360; hot-swappable MicroSD slot (4GB included); and a standard 3.5mm audio plug for your rocking headsets.
People carousel
It’s all about quick access. There’s the Media Bar drop-down that’s also on the Nokia 5800, for quick access to the music player, browser, and photos. But on the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, you can also define 4 shortcuts for the home screen (say, for Facebook or MySpace quick links). Also, one of the big additions, we think, is the new Contact Bar that lets you have up to 20 contacts, making it easy to quickly call or send a message, review conversation history, or follow the contact’s feed. It’s like a quick dashboard on your 20 most important people. What’s more, add a pic to those contacts and your peeps are front-and-center.
The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic should start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 at around €199, retail, before taxes and subsidies.
Pics down below.
And the winner is…
Let’s not forget the Pass the Parcel game.
The winner, PhoneDog.com, will be getting a Nokia 5530 XpressMusic before it ships (still with that factory aroma), some small goodies, and also a “date” with the Product Manager to interview for their site. We’re also going to be having some goodies for the other Pass the Parcel participants, which we will announce later. And, like we said before, we have a treat for one lucky person who has been commenting on our Pass the Parcel pages, which we will also announce later.
Thanks all of you who made the Pass the Parcel game fun. Let us know what you thought of it and if we should do similar fun games in the future.

Put the E72 features in the 5530 form factor, and you have a decent competitor to the iPhone 3GS or Android G1.
Once you’re in the $300+ category, you have to compete with the Blackberry Storm, iPhone 3GS and Android (T-mobile) G1 (or soon G2).
The best selling smartphones in this category have 3G data *AND* a larger screen. Too bad you have the slow data in the bigger (more attractive) form factor, and the smaller screen with the faster data (don’t you think people want a decent browsing experience with a larger screen when they pay extra for faster data???).
Just my 2cents … I like Nokia, but … (see above).

Nice enhancements in respect to the homescreen; and pretty much seems like the 5800XM without the HSDPA. Really low price too. Coolbeans.
Great idea for the contest to; you should definitely look at doing this in the future (once a season possibly).

And that phone was worth all the effort? I was expecting something much more spectacular.

I saw this phone before in a leaked photo, this was the one referred to as 5900 XpressMusic by the said leak c”,
Nice looking phone and arguably the best 200Euro marked touchscreen in the midteir to low end range. With a sound box infront, it will be as loud as a supersonic boom!
Oh well, it isn’t Nokia Superman, for sure it will come in September at the Nokia World event! No mistake about that hahaha

Nice slick device, and a great price too.!
Looking forward to what Goodies you have for some of the other participants.:)

Well, it’s seems i wasn’t right about that “diferent platform” thing, but i was right when i said it could be a “gift for the less fortunate ones”..
And the “pass the parcel” idea, well it was good.. It would be AWESOME if you guys haven’t forgoten the mighty “Symbian-Freak.com” on your list of “Unpackers”… (you sucked on that…)
About the phone itself, i think this is the one i’ve been waiting for. I want to try the touch interface, i am a huge fan of Nokia’s phones, and i’m a bit short of cash nowadays (blaim the crisis), and this phone is cheap, touch and Nokia!

Well they do seem like nice phones. I might even go for something like the 5530 if it weren’t for the seemingly forever on-going XM branding and blue-red colour schemes. Couldn’t they just be like, black and white, if it has be two colours.

@msav, If the 5530 had 3G i would look at getting one over a 5800 just because of the new widgets and homescreen as its better.
But no 3G is a big no no for me

@Dan Carter, That’s just the thing. The 5530 is a wee bit low in specs, but has a nicer home screen than 5800 and some widgets. As a result, neither is really da bomb.
So now there’s a touch portfolio building up, all have different home screens, some have widgets, some don’t… why?

@Dan Carter, who cares about 3G when wi-fi is available?
Speaking for myself, i don’t use 3G (not even to make videocalls, and i don’t pay a cent for any kind of calls).
Obviously 3G would be a good adition, but it’s a small issue..

@Nuno Pereira, problem is WiFi is not available everywhere, you are ok at home or when by a hotspot but for normal web browsing and downloading when your on the move no 3G can make it a bit annoying.
It also limits possibilities though like streaming video via QIK because of the low bandwidth available.
Nuno Pereira Reply:

@Dan Carter, you’re right: On the move, 3G is needed.
But, speaking for myself (again) there are numerous free hotspots, and wi-fi coverage is getting bigger day by day.
(Here on Portugal we have the FON community also, and despite it’s not the solution, it is part of it.)
For a cheap phone, i think it’s ok, specially when compared to its closest competitors such as the Samsung’s Star and LG Cookie. (Having the advantage of Nokia’s touch interface.)

@Dan Carter, i actually agree with you, if it has 3g then this phone would be way better than the 5800!

@msav, the 5530 will be available in:
Black with red tones
White with blue tones
White with yellow tones
Black with grey tones
White with pink tones (I promisse i’ll buy one of these for my wife..)

@Nuno Pereira, but why really the tones? Do people statistically prefer colourful plastic stripes? Oh well, I guess the minimalist in me will go with the black/grey then.

@msav, well, that’s your perspective :p
Just like you, there are other persons who like single colours, but i think i’m not wrong when i say that a few others will love these stripes..
But still you have your part of the reason.

Feels like it’s slightly redesigned 3G-less 5800 phone. Definitely, more attractive price and look is worth it. I think Nokia should have done this even earlier – not everybody needs 3G connectivity.

5530 is something that I have been waiting for a long time. I’ve been following the pda/touchscreen market for some time now as I had a Iphone 1st gen. and currently use Nokia E51.
The 5530 is very close to the device I thought Nokia would eventually release and what I was waiting to buy for “off-office” use.
I think the first mistake was mixing the design with 5800 and 5530. 5800 looks like the cheap one and 5530 has more the E-series look.
The real problem is of course the lack of 3g. I dont think (atleast in my local area, Finland) people will want to buy a “media phone” without proper internet connections. I mean, who cares about hot keys to Facebook when its slow like…
Maybe there is a E-series touch pda coming that will combine the best parts of 5530&5800. Too bad I dont see a “touchpad only” phone handy for “business use”… Also the price will be too high for leisure use… Keeping in mind the target people Nokia has.
Maybe we will see something 4Q/2009

What a goof !
I have a 5610 which has video 30fps …
This new one only has 15fps … so no fluent video. As soon as I read this, the 5530 phone is not interesting !

@KeitaiKun, I checked the specifications at the official Nokia website in Belgium. The page is dutch but when you search the section marked “Video”, you will see “max 15fps” :

You know, the screen transitions look prety good. Something that will surely make S60 look better to the flashy savy reviewers and users in the US. However, this lack of 3G support is ridiculous, yet it has Wi-Fi support? What’s that all about? It seems to me that Nokia screwed that up. This should most definitely HAVE 3G and NOT have Wi-Fi being the base model touchscreen device that it is. I also like the kinetic scrolling I’ve seen on a few videos. Something that should definitely be integrated into a future 5800XM firmware update.
