Nokia 5530 XpressMusic reaction

By Mike on 16 June 2009

GLOBAL – A little over 24 hours ago the new Nokia 5530 XpressMusic sprouted onto the mobile scene, first seeing daylight in Singapore and simultaneously unveiled in our Pass the Parcel unwrapping here on Conversations (watch video). Many have been alluding to the new Nokia 5530 XpressMusic as a baby brother to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which I guess in many ways is a fair assessment. Some folk highlight how feature-packed media savvy touchscreen smartphones such as this are now becoming part of the mid-range norm, while others focus on the compact styling and low cost. Carry on reading after the break to read a bunch of initial reactions from across the web, and, of course, to leave your opinions.

Here are some of the reactions I came across this afternoon, but please feel free to highlight any others in the comments section below that you might have come across (the good, the bad and the down right barmy). And don’t be shy to leave your thoughts on the new 5530 XpressMusic inside.

Rafe Blandford over at All About Symbian touched on the significance of the low cost of the device in this short snippet:

“It will be one of the cheapest touch smartphone of the market when it launches later this year and uses the S60 platform to deliver key music software and services.”

An opinion echoed by Mikael Ricknäs, IDG News Service, writing for PC World – the piece goes on to highlight some interesting insights from Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight:

“The phone is yet another example of how the line between smartphones and cheaper mid-tier phones is being blurred. “It’s definitely for people who can’t afford an iPhone, and that is not a negative thing by the way. There are people who want that experience, but can’t justify the expense of an iPhone,” said Wood.”"

Boy Genius wasn’t over the moon about the lack of 3G, yet acknowledged the value and low cost accessibility angle of the handset:

“Seriously, Nokia? You put out a phone capable of speeds over 10Mbps and you’re still making EDGE-only phones? Ok fine, this will help make the phone insanely accessible compared to the competition but sheesh, are 3G radios that expensive?”

Techgadgets.in had this to say:

“The 5530 incorporates superior media handling capacities in one small and sleek package”

Finally Zara Rabinowicz at ShinyShiny (a self-confessed lover of the 5800) unabashedly expressed a soft spot for the look of the new 5530:

“But what really attracts me to the phone shallow as I am, is the style.”

Agree or disagree with any of these? Want to add something to the mix? Please feel free to throw your thoughts into the pot in the comments section below, and highlight any other views that you might’ve come across.

A lot of people are already asking why this device exists today, saying its another 5800 type phone. I say to them, there are devices for different markets, and the 5530, to me, fits the teenage, female market. Thats just my 2cent.

many people may criticize lack of 3G, GPS, but when you see the price I think this is perfect value for money.
    Well Done Nokia

Now, just make a little bit better specced 5800 like N/E-series phones with (preferably) capacitive screen (not deal breaker) and I would so buy that. Also, faster CPU and dedicated GPU wouldn’t hurt and you can never have enough ram.

A device such as the 5530 XpressMusic is MUCH NEEDED to speed up adoption of the “S60 5th edition” touch UI. It was a wise move from Nokia to cover the lower part of the market.

Fanboyz always think that each new product has to be “better” than the previous one presented. It’s not true. Nokia is a global company with different markets and segments. It has to cover them all! So be patient. With the N97, 5800, and now the 5530 many more will get a Symbian smartphone which is the goal of it all!

The strange thing is that it has Wifi but not 3G. Of course they are not correlated, but if the phone was to be a low-cost alternative, Wifi functionality could also be removed. However, if it is not that cheap, then why doesn’t it also include 3G? I don’t think it would bring a huge price increase.

This phone is perfect for me as I don’t want 3G and its added monthly fee. I mainly just want music, a calendar and a phone with a small “pocket print”.

the 5530 will have it’s own fan base but i think it will be more down to how the phone looks than how well it works.

All depends on the RRP the 5530 gets, the 5800 is cheap enough so this will be even cheaper. Maybe more of a PAYG range device

I just bought a 5800. What really sets me up right now is that 5530 has a better processor and new features in the standby-screen. So Nokia – seriously, what were you thinking when releasing this? Same market like 5800, some features are better but generally no 5800 user would buy it because it lacks 3G and GPS.

I hope at least you’ll update 5800 firmware to match the one on 5530, so 5800 users also can add more than 4 contacts and widgets in the standby screen.

Thats just my 0.014 euros. And if you read this – please remove the “sometimes one click, sometimes double-click” thing from the menus. That just annoys everybody, and everybody complains about that – read the reviews.

    Thank you.

Can anyone confirm the video capture resolution? According to the pdf data sheet at Nokia Press it’s 640×360@30fps, while Forum Nokia and the official product page hints 176×220@15fps. Thanks!

I guess it aint marketed at the UK market if it doesn’t have 3G. Seems like a good piece of equipment, but not to my taste at all. Still bowled over by the N97 i guess :)

ANything after that doesn’t seem worth it!

Its a really good budget phone, but i will be really pi$$’d if nokia decide to forget the 5800 because of these new devices. You outta know, 5800 is still very much THE BEST SELLER in the market right now, If nokia decide to not give those home screen features to 5800, many new owners of a “COSTLIER” phone will be unhappy.
Look at the e71 and e63, software wise they are similar, hardware has differences, hence the price difference too.

That’s exactly how 5800 and 5530 should be! PLEASE DONT DIFFERENTIATE THEM BY USING SOFTWARE! GIVE US AN UPDATE FOR OUR 5800 INCLUDING THESE FEATURES!!!!!!!!!!!

Nokia has taken the most foolish decision of not adding 3G to 5530. Whats the use of a such a huge gorgous touchscreen when u cant brozse the web with breeze. Apart from this the phone is a perfect multimedia device just like the 5800. You need not break the bank to have iPhone similar experience now :)

If Nokia can added 3G to 2730 classic which costs half the price of 5530. then Y not in 5530 itself. I wish Nokia to serously reconsider adding 3G to it.

about 3G mybe they really f… up but for me it really isnt that big of a deal cos i dont use it that much and i wouldnt really miss it. for me calling and music is really what i need, i like touch screen :D and using camera from time to time so this phone would be great for me. and if you want gps you could install some programs and use bluetooth GPS Receiver.

I guess 3G is not necessary for such a phone, because its target are younger people who propably could not afford mobile flatrates.

Is there a petition anywhere in the web where i can sign to force Nokia to bring the 5530 software features on my 5800? You can be sure to have millions of happy customers who have in mind that Nokia cares for them!

I also want to know if the stated video capture resolution of 176×220@15fps is a typo or an unnecessary marketing trick to make the 5800 more attractive.

Go for the 5530. You really do not need the 3G feature and WiFi navigation is more than enough, and can find hotspots. I own this phone and I love it. I had the N95, but here in Mexico 3G rates are too expensive and monthly plans are a steal, so I never use it. I really like the 5530 better than my N95.
