Nokia E72 reaction
By JBC on 16 June 2009
GLOBAL – Yesterday saw the release of the latest in the E-series lineup with the announcement of the Nokia E72. The reaction was pretty amazing, along with the other two device announcements made yesterday, the whole lot meant for our second busiest day on Nokia Conversations – second only to the N97 launch. So what do people think? On the whole, the E72 seems to be a welcome addition to the family. The focus of the device’s improvements over the E71 centered on listening to customer feedback from the E71 and trying to include as much of the requirements as possible in the E72. That seems to have gone down well across the board, along with the improvements people weren’t expecting, such as the optical scrolling. Read on for an overview of reactions.
The comments section on yesterday’s story were buzzing with excitement and feedback from the launch. Overall the reaction was very positive (thanks guys!) though there were some tough questions being asked too, which we’ll endeavour to get answered. Donny and Albert G both ask about USB charging, and question why the E72 still uses a Nokia charger rather than the more universal USB connection seen on the N97. Fair point. Other commenters raised the issue of only having 15fps for video capture, rather than 30fps. We’ll be looking further into this one also.
Reaction from outside has been pretty extensive. We can’t include links and comments from everyone here, but if you want to see more check out the trackbacks on yesterday’s E72 announcement post. You can also check out Google News as that’s picked up quite a bit too.

That is just a flavour of what’s been written so far and all round it’s looking like the E72 will be as popular as its predecessor. Aside from some negativity around the way the device was launched, I couldn’t actually find anything negative written about the device itself (if you spot something, and feel it should be included, let us know in the comments and we’ll update the article).
We’re waiting to get our hands on one and as soon as we do, we’ll be letting you know what we think. Meanwhile we’ll be working to get some answers to the questions already raised. If you have any more, please feel free to add them below.

If it just wont’ have the “hand effect” of E71 (hold it in your hand while using it, and it loose signal), it will be mine as soon as possible!!

Non-camera version of the E52/E55 or even E72?

So what does this mean? Will the E72 support USB charging or not? Nokia Europe says that it will. Check it here, under the CONNECTORS section.

Because it will really be a big turnoff if the E72 won’t support microUSB charging.

There is a very important and unique feature of Nokia E71 missing on the E72, the IR port. It enables the phone to be a Universal IR Remote. Please check this, no other phone can do that, if you are thinking on multimedia devices this feature is a killer one. The IR port also enables communication with business laptops. I hope the IR will be back again in some future.

@Sebastián Ebensperger,
I fully agree with you. Its not costly & does not require much space. I hope nokia retain the IR option. With IR port included it will have all the conectivity options.

That’s right. I was so happy Nokia E70 had IR port and my E71 also has it. That way I can use HP Capshare (http://bit.ly/2of5tp) which is discontinued to transfer scanned documents. Hope E72 also has IR port, I can’t live without it.

The specification sheet found on Nokia’s website suggests that E72 could only hold not more than 1000 contacts. Is this true?

I have an E71 and the E72 improvements look really good, but here’s my question for Nokia – will you be following Apple’s lead with the iphone 3G/3GS and providing an update to the o/s to feature pack 2 for E71 users? Given the E71x is already at this level, I assume there are no hardware constraints to prevent this. I would love to be able to take updates for my E71 without having to re-install all the apps I’m running as is the case on FP1 and of course see some of the non-hardware dependent updates listed for the E72 come to the E72…

Please tell us the battery life hasn’t changed (or has improved). It’s one of my favorite points about the phone. I’m also curious as to how the new d-pad functions. Not that I cared much but the IR port is gone in the new version correct?
Also don’t fall for the touch screen trend, and who needs the higher resolution? The phone is what the internet calls “serious business” and I love it for that.
I have some small current issues with my E71 but they are more related to the OS than anything (guess I should apply to the pilots program?). Mainly the music/photo/etc libraries blending with each other, meaning a browse for files in the voice recording app freezes for minutes as it indexes 1000+ songs on my MicroSDHC card. Same for ring-tones… Yuck!

Well, the only thing thats missed out on the E72 is an FM transmitter… That would have just been sweet… Now I will have to plug it onto the FM transmitter in my car, everytime!!..
Also, I would also like to see a cameraless version of this phone so that I can replace my E61 with this at my work place…
I’ve been reading reviews of the E75 which has a 3.5mm jack but not good audio quality when compared with E63/E71… I hope its not the same case with E72….
Thats pretty much it… Given the fact that the E71 is a good phone E72 should not be dissappointing at somthing that E71 was good at…
For eg, the E61 or E51..etc have their right softkey as “Loudspeaker” during a call and this was something thats common with all nokias but not with E61i which has it as “Mute” instead which really annoyed many people. Lots of forums and groups discussed it…
Hope such new problems dont creep into the E72 rather than fixing the existing problems that E71 has.

e-series phones is focused to business.
isn’t it a very good thing to add video-out (thru its 3.5mm) for business (and personal) presentations (powerpoint, slides, pics, and video capture).
it can be connected to projectors/LCD (for business), or hooked to TV sets (family, personal).
nokia, its already 2009, where is our TV-OUT feature for e series? im so sad:-(
like those found in oldie n95, n82, 5800xm, etc..

I am a user of Nokia E71 for one year now.
Now, many comments were made in the last one year over the small screen as well as the small qwerty key size. Very often, many users need to use the tip of their thumbs or nails to punch the keys.
So much to our disappointment, Nokia chooses to retains the E71 spec in E72.
Albert, we all like sleek, very pocketable devises, it would be very welcoming if the E72 is made with a slightly bigger screen (say 2.6in) and bigger qwerty keys for a more thumbable experience.
My point is that the E7x phone is a qwerty key phone. As such, the thumbing experience to users ought to be world class and to make it world class, it got to be slightly bigger for a more comfortable and quicker messaging experience.
Believe me, with a 2.6in screen and bigger buttons, this devise would convert even many blackberry fans. Not sure about the die hard ones though…
So, how about taking this comment seriously into the next E7x phone.
My best wishes to Nokia!
Thank you for the E71. I am still enjoying it. But like I’d said, it can better if it is slight bigger/wider….

@boone, i personally as well as so many other ppl are more than comfortable with the keyboard as for the screen it could have been bigger but then again one of the phones best features is the size and as it is it already stolen a bunch of BB fans !!

I really believe the e71 to be the finest phone Nokia has ever made. The e72 seems to be an excellent refinement of what was already a fantastic phone. I’ll be purchasing one the day it is released. I hope Nokia continue their excellent work in this direction. I believe these phones shame anything Blackberry has to offer, and have secured Nokia’s position as the clear leader in the QWERTY smartphone category. The build-quality and form factor (thin) are unmatched. The e-series’ success is proof Nokia has been listening to consumer demand in this form-factor, something I can’t say regarding their touchscreen efforts (resistive? in 2009? a stylus?). Keep up the excellent work, Nokia!!!

I really like the E71 (have two – one for each SIM)
That you have added two more keys while making the space bar smaller (sometimes makes a funny noice due to its double hinge when pressed) is excellent. Looking forward to being able to press åäö without pressing some char-button. One up against BB!
Will this sweet little machine be able to accept and switch between calls and WLAN and GSM/3G?
Will the Mail for Exchange plugin be able to: send meeting requests; synchronise notes; map the phone fields of a contact properely (now Business2 becomes business, Other is never maped, “Mobile (home)” and “Mobile (business)” are spuriously mapped etc?
Will the phone strip the string “(0)” from an international phone number when dialing, as per ITU recommendations, and the millions of contacts out there in people’s Exchange address books?
Most Europeans, Africans and Asians speak more than one language, and most certainly want to be able to enter place and people names in multiple languages. Will I be able to enter éèü¿¡çñøæ and the other Latin1 characters by using chr-ctrl, or even bettter by being able to switch between keyboard layouts?
Multiple Exchange Accounts?
Be able to use Bt headset while on a VoWLAN call (without massive interference)?
Oh, and by the way: OTA firmware will be a quantum leap forward. Fantastic – thanks!

I’m seein a lot of videos and Pics on the net and its very disturbing to find that the keyboard letters are not visible, especially the brown and the Grey coloured phones….
I see that they are white in colour when they should have been a dark color since the background is light…
Nokia, would you mind looking on the Nokia E61. A light coloured phone that has a dark keyboard letters….
The black phone looks fine though!

I have been in the market within the past month or so to buy an E71, and was astonished when I heard news about the E72 coming out, so I’m definitely holding fire until it’s released instead of buying the E71.
I agree with what others have said that it would be really nice to have a micro USB charger rather than the Nokia one. It is becoming much more common place, and would be incredibly more convenient.
Also, it would be nice to have a leather carrying case in the retail package like the E71 has.
Aside from that, it all looks good to me, can’t wait to get one in my hot little hands!

Please confirm if E72 has infrared like E71.
It is not listed in the specifications, however when comapring it with other phones on the nokia site it says yes?
IR is still relevant and should be included.

The e72 looks like a good improvement on the e71 (which I have been using for 11 months now). I hope the new 5 megapixel camera is better than the 3 megapixel one in the e71 – which was very poor. I also hope that the new camera will improve the cardscan application which is useless currently.
None of the reviews I have seen so far talk about the camera beyond the megapixels – as the e71 proved, you can have a reasonable megapixel count, but the camera can still be rubbish! Fingers crossed.
I will miss the IR – I use it occasionally when I couldn’t get BT on my PC to play the game, but that wouldn’t deter me from buying the phone.

the E71 is amongst the best phones on the market.
I personally own the E63, use it continuously for radio and www, plus odd phone call; 16 hours battery usage, only goes down to two bars, amazing specs.
I currently enjoy visiting phone shops, asking about e.g iphone, then asking if it can do certain things – like; cater for one handed email replies; fm radio, office editing s/w etc; usually they can’t; so i smugly walk out, knowing that i still got the best phone for me.
cheers

nokia e72 to launch in 2nd week of november in india. i just spoke to a big dealer in india(not to mention who).but it seems tht the dealers are marking the price above 24K INR. which is a set back to the nokia fans coz its not worth the wait thn.
seriously guys believe me. i have studied the phone completely and have seen almost all videos of its demo functionings. i wud say tht the worth amount will be 21K-22K INR. nethng more thn tht will be a con on the phone.not to mention tht the 5 MP camera is nt tht good. bt it can be accepted in the E-series phones. now lets just hope tht nokia comes early with ths heavily awaited model b4 losing the charm of it bcoz i ve seen ppl opting to buy BB instead.

Dear Nokia Co,
I’ve been waiting for this phone for ages – no one (even the nokia dealers) seem to know when its gonna launch in india…. for the last 4 months they seem to think its “Coming Soon” .. Since no one is willing to confirm the dates, I’ve lost all patience and am going to buy a BlackBerry.
Just thought I’ll let you know I’m one of the many customers you are losing out on.
Thanks

I quite agree with Chrominant. If you have already waited so long, i dont think waiting a few days/weeks would harm. E72 is a feature rich phone. Unless you are a true BB fan, you should wait for E72 release which will ‘hopefully’ be soon.

Lot of folks waiting for THE E72.
Just to refresh minds [may be to keep motivated to wait] — Great enhancements.
Best enhancements I liked, over E71
===================================
1. Optical scrolling (E71 D pad sucks when scrolling web pages)
2. 3.5 mm Audio jack
3. More internal memory than E71 (but not enough compared to competition)
4. 4GB memory card included in “whats in the box” – as per Nokia forums
5. USB Charging (along with traditional pin)
6. Supposedly much better battery life – need to check how it performs with 3G.
One thing that Nokia should seriously consider
==============================================
Even if Nokia ties up with any carrier (lot of posts say ATT), Nokia should not compromize on what Nokia wants to offer to the users. E71 was sold in US by ATT – it has full of ATT stuff filled in it. Some features of Nokia are supressed (removed by ATT). Nokia should not get into such agreements on E72.
ATT sold iPhone but iPhone does not have a flavor of ATT except for one of the menu items somewhere hidden in the settings. Why should Nokia compromize ?
Release date – BIGGEST CONCERN – No official announcement anywhere – Frustrating…
It is still much awaited phone…
Nokia… hurry up… Say Something…

Well, I agree with Parul, though I recognize the fact that E72 is a very nice phone to have and wait for. You see, when you send news of a phone too ahead of its launch time and which is a true worthy competitor in its league then in such a case, delaying the launch will definitely harm the sales. Be a BB fan or not, its about requirement and Indian market never shows loyalty for a product [cellphone as a whole] from which you can move on to a next model in an year.
Given that the E71 was a success here and it suits the requirements very well, in order to have have more people follow up to E72 the phone should not be delayed. You can’t keep up the phone’s craze for long.
BB has already introduced the optical keypad in a competitively priced phone and is hot selling. In India, the largest consumer of phones are non technical people to whom the technical spec matter less. Any thing that takes 3-5 seconds more to do job but costs 10k less is a winner here.
E72 is very good phone, I love it. But in this fast flux market, quick moves makes you win. See Samsung.
Hope the phone is there in 2nd week of November.
