Just how rugged is a rugged device?

GLOBAL – When a new rugged device started doing the rounds internally recently, we decided to get all scientific and conduct a few tests. First job was to work out what tests we could conduct. Given that Nokia’s reliability lab do a lot of work on scientifically testing devices, we thought we ought to take more of a “real world” angle on things. We also figured it’d be a good idea to bring a video camera along to record proceedings.
What we’ve come up with are a series of videos showing off our experiments, and the results. The first two are live today and we’ll be revealing more over the coming days. We kicked things off (quite literally) with what we thought would be a gentle test, the traditional rugby kick. We didn’t quite figure on Mike’s lofty left foot though. Watch the video below to see what happens.
Our second test brought out what we thought would be the big guns. Now, we’re no pro golfers, but our years of hacking around pitch and putt courses have helped to develop something of a swing, certainly enough to send an object from one end of the field to another. Did the device make it out the other side? The results might just surprise.

I would love to create some videos like this. Get an N97 and absolutely smash the hell out of it and see if it survives

@gregg003, We didn’t want to whack it with a driver at full strength, as I doubt anything (even a brick) could survive that. But James did give it a fair old whack with a 9 iron – more of an approach shot than a fairway smash
And on the kicking front. I kicked it as hard as I could without breaking the skinny bones in my foot (you should’ve seen the bruise!). Come to think of it I should’ve taken a photo.

Well, i know you’ve done your best to prove us that this phone will be hard to break, but…
The screen breaked on the golf swing, and nobody want’s a phone with a breaked screen.. (or maybe i want it, but that’s just c’os it’s a protptype..)
Now serious, you’ve found a way to show how strong this phone will be on a fun way. Way to go!
Waiting eagerly for the “revelation”.
Btw, is it a 6xx series?

@Nuno Pereira, The screen didn’t break (which even surprised us!). What you can see on the screen are rain drops – we shot this video straight after the rugby one when it was a torrential downpour – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj0JMQsmJqc&feature=channel
