Nokia Surge on sale next week

By JBC on 14 July 2009

DALLAS, USA – AT&T and Nokia have announced the Nokia Surge will go on sale in the USA on July 19. The device is a “socially supercharged smartphone” designed to make messaging and texting a breeze, for text, IM, email, MMS, AT&T Video Share or just connecting on social networks. The S60 device sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for rapid-fire typing, a 2.4-inch QVGA display and is a neat 15mm thin.

The landscape design adds to the messaging experience whilst the device itself looks pretty cool. The stats measure up too, with 400 hours of standby time and up to 4.7 hours talktime. Memory can be expanded to 8GB with MicroSD whilst there’s 128MB of memory on board. Pictures are handled by the two-megapixel camera whilst video recording is QVGA quality.

All the usual S60 treats are in store for Nokia Surge users along with a host of AT&T services including AT&T Navigator which will make use of the device’s built-in GPS. JuiceCaster is also on board, enabling users to post messages, updates and media to popular social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The Nokia Surge will be available from July 19 2009 for $79.99 with a two-year contract.

I would actually love a cheap messaging device with physical qwerty. I find this form factor interesting. But isn’t it an idea to merge this form factor with a good camera phone, like the N86? It’s one thing to make excellent photo’s with a phone like the N86, but to use T9 when sending that photo by MMS or e-mail? No thanks.
