What is the most important feature in a cameraphone?
By Mike on 23 July 2009
GLOBAL – Yesterday, we brought you a story on the N73 being more than just a cameraphone, which got us thinking. What is the most important feature in a cameraphone? The new Nokia N86 has raised the bar performance-wise in a number of ways, but with the megapixel race slowing, what is it that you believe is most significant?

top quality optics.
none of the rest would matter if the picture came out ugly because of inferior optics

for both nokia 5800 and n97, i would want nokia to use tap to focus on both phones because most touch screen phones these days have that feature and nokia, i think, is being left out!

Optics are an obvious choice, but I couuld live with less than top notch optics but I couldn’t live with a camera whose flash was so weak it couldn’t illuminate anthing more than six inches a way — Like my $750 n93!!!!

Maybe now NOkia (and all other makers) that 100 MP isn`t the goal!
Why would i capture pictures that take up to 4MB of my memory and about 5 seconds for the computer/phone to open?
For HiFi pictures i will buy a canon and for vacation pictures a nokia 3.2MP phone.
I think Nokia should try to maximize image quality not megapixel count!

Well, i voted for the “Fast autofocus and capture”, but it’s not all about the focus/capture.
I belieave that people who buy a camera enabled phone, want it for those quick shots, like when we’re on the car, and the driver in front of us is going towards the wall.
I speak for myself, as i only use my (ex-)E65’s camera for quick shots.
I had an N73 (actually, i had 2 of them), and the thing that bugged me, was the ammount of time that the camera needed to startup. I’ve missed some cute shots because of that.
Resuming: We need a “Faster than a SonyEricsson’s” camera on our Nokias, and of course, with fast autofocus/capture.
Btw, in second place, we need those Carl Zeiss lenses, or better

General suggestion:
Please make a post allowing people to vote what they expect from a new firmware. It can be general stuff like speed, new apps and so on, but you can try to make a new section for easch model where users can posst bugs, speed issues or general issues of their phones and your programmers should try and fix them on the new update.
You should be more opened to your user`s opinion!

It has to be the top quality optics, then the fast autofocus and capture. Bright Screen in “broad daylight” should be included here, its as important as the feature mentioned. How can we see what where taking if we can hardly see a thing on the screen. Its N86 weakness at the moment which hopefully Nokia could improve in their upcoming firmware updates.

The most important feature is of course quality optics and next to me is 720p video capability

For example, ccd shift,5X optical zoom,Face recognition and so on . Certainl, quality of picture is also the most important feature in a cameraphone!

Umm- all of the factors above feed into the one, most important feature of any camera. Good, quality results.
These require good optics, decent megapixel count, fast focus, etc.
Oh, and if you don’t have decent image processing capability none of the other stuff matters.
GOOD QUALITY RESULTS in all lighting conditions, motion, etc.

I think speed (camera app launch, and capture) and mobile features like GPS tagging and sharing are key. There is nothing worse than having a decent camera phone in your pocket and then it takes nearly 15 seconds to open shutter, load app, focus and capture, then the subject is gone

What feature puts the Camera in Camera Phone?
It’s all very well having a camera boasting the highest pixel levels, face recognition or even a setting for the once or twice you might visit an aquarium and wish to take a picture of the fish. However, the one feature that makes a camera phone take great pictures is the size and quality of the lens.
I have a slightly antiquated Sony Ericcson camera phone, with only a ‘meagre’ 2mb, yet with it, I have managed to take some of the best pictures have ever taken, with any camera.
This camera is so good that Sony setup a website purely for it’s photographers, for this one phone.
How is this possible with a meager 2mb?! I hear you scream..
The lens.
The lens is so good it warrants it’s own website, and weekly competitions on it.
So there you have it, build a good lens and the rest will follow.
