What’s the most important feature in a mobile gaming device?

By Mike on 19 August 2009

Nokia N86 8MP is N-Gage ready for premium pocket gamingGLOBAL – Over the past few weeks we’ve run a series of polls asking you what the most important feature in a camera phone, web browsing device, and most recently, a music phone. This week we thought we’d dust off our thumbs and point them at mobile gaming devices.

Now, N-Gage is arguably the best gaming experience you can have on a Nokia device, with the most sophisticated service, best graphics, online connectivity, yada, yada. But what’s most important to you? And let’s not forget Java games that funnel fun into the palms of most people using mid to entry level devices.

Throw your hat in the ring and vote for what matters to you most!

N-Gage is the best experience for mobile gaming. To bad that not all the games can be installed on the new Nokia N97

By far I think the most important feature is dedicated easy gaming controls. I think this is where phones such as N86 8MP really excel, since having a tight, handss-on control over games makes them playable without having to pay too much attention to where your fingers are placed. This is also the reason why many iPhone games are not very fun to play, as simulated buttons on a touch screen just don’t give you enough response.

It has to be great graphics and sound c”, and I direly hope that 3D Graphics HW Accelerator returns to NSeries or even better. You can really differentiate the gaming performance of N95’s or N82’s to the current breed of NSeries phones.

N-Gage should also come up with lots of 3D supported games to differentiate it from the Java games which currently pollute the N-Gage catalog.

And N-Gage games should be available everywhere, we cant buy N-Gage games here in my country, miss opportunity for Nokia to earn.

N-gage on the N97 annoys as there is no real Touch support on games which should support it. In the end this makes the user experience worse than game play on a non-touch device as the user is aware of what could be done and what hasn’t been done.

I voted “Large catalogue of games”, like short turn SLG that can play in bus, or some STG like touhou……uh, never mind. I think the biggest problem is title of games not enough.

And, if the keys for N-GAGE can be customize, it will be more comfortable to play. I want to buy Prince of Persia, but it’s hard to play with numeric keys of N97……

We need an N97 edition of N-GAGE, which be able to costomize a most comfortable set of game control for user in its large keypad, and great graphic and clear texts in big screen (anti-aliased).

And beside them, maybe we need one big title from FF, DQ, or KH series.

    Voted for other: Snakes

In my opinion we have to admit the fact that the mobile devices’ screen size IS small and 3D performance and gfx effects are not the right way to go. At least I am a big fan of Nokia Snakes, tetris and sudoku, and a good selection of game classics is the most important feature of a mobile gaming device. IMO simple is more in this case.

To me it’s “Dedicated easy gaming controls” + “Large screen” + “Long battery life”.

I voted for the graphics also, but if you don’t mind (i know you don’t), i’ll try to elaborate a bit:

I usually don’t play that much on my handset (currently i’m stuck with the 1100 :( ), but i KNOW that generealy, the main attraction of games is stunning graphics. N-gage is FAR from that, and Iphone beats it by miles (and i don’t like it a bit too).
N-Gage is a fraud from Nokia, and the games are to expensive if we look into the quality/price relation. With 10€ i can buy a game for my PC or a platinum game for my PS2..

Now, about HW acceleration… well, i don’t know much about hardware, but i know that on a PC, there is a huge diference betwen having a graphics card and not having one, and being the last one a pre-historic solution to minimize the cost of a PC. On mobiles, i think (and almost know) that it’s the same.

Nokia guys can make whatever they want, but in the end, i’ll only spend half of my paycheck if i know i’ll get what i want. Currently, i don’t want Nokia.. i want samsung’s OmniaHD, only because its cortex A8 beats the C**p out of the N97’s ARM11.. (and notice this: I’m an e-series man…)

    sorry for the long statement…

Games that contstantly crash is my vote.

I just removed n-gage from my N97. Every game I bought worked fine in demo mode, but as soon as I bought it the games would constantly crash. And as the “support” for n-gage is terrible, if exists at all, there is no one to turn to in order to get support.

Yes I uninstalled n-gage, and the games, and then reinstalled and yet the issues never went away.

My suggestion? Go back to game disks that we can install in our devices. I had a n-gage QD and loved it. I only stopped using it because the device wasn’t compatible with the market.

You’d see that “ability to move games to new device” will be rated low, because it is not criteria for the consideration set. When deciding whether I want to purchase an n-gage device, I will be most interested in the quality of the game. Thus if you hit the right buttons with “great graphics and sound”, “big name games” & even price you will get INITIAL purchase.

I highlight INITIAL because I dare predict, if n-gage continues to disallow pegging game bought to n-gage account and instead insist on tagging it to device imei and restrict no. of reinstallations, n-gage will fail due to poor repurchase with rapid drop-outs. Especially since ovi store provide games as well there is a easy alternative (not saying it is better) for any dissatisfaction.

Because “ability to move games to new devices” is about a consumer need at a very hygiene level, we’re talking about “ownership”. They expect to own it, they think they’ll own it. Post-purchase, a similar poll like this would see this criteria jump sky-high. I bought the game, I know it has great graphics and sound and what-nots, now I thought all along I owned it, why can’t I move it when I upgrade to a newer phone and put more money into your company’s pocket? Very big post-purchase cognitive dissonance, did I do the right thing?

N-gage doesn’t take care of the entire product experience, it’s not about doing a good job, it is about failing a hygiene level consumer need at post-purchase. This platform has no longevity.

    So is Comes With Music.

If services is Nokia’s scale up and vision, it needs to wake up and do business like a service company.
