Suggest questions for Nokia World 09
By Mike on 20 August 2009
STUTTGART, Germany – In little under two weeks the entire Conversations team will be setting off on our Nokia World 09 adventure (2-3 September), to bring you our take on things as they happen. As I mentioned in yesterday’s NW09 keynote speaker story, we’ve managed to secure a bunch of interviews with a broad range of smart Nokia folk at NW09, and we’re keen to get your suggestions for questions you’d like us to ask them on your behalf as the esteemed Conversations readership.
Over the coming week we’ll be selecting the best questions you suggest, ready to unleash them on our interviewees at Nokia World 09.
Read on to find out who we’ll be chatting to throughout the event, and leave your suggestions for questions in the comments section inside.
In terms of how to direct your questions, we’re speaking to Nokia people involved in a number of areas, including navigation and context aware services, Maemo, Ovi Store, mobile gaming, music and design.
Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of many of the folk listed below (we’re guilty too, as a few names were new to us too!), but the most important thing to remember here is that we have a rare chance to explore these exciting areas of Nokia with some interesting and debate-inspiring questions aimed at the people in the know. So have a think and share your question suggestions.
Here’s the list of people and their respective speciality areas:
- Christof Hellmis (VP Product, People and Places)
- Eric John (Director, Ovi Store)
- Juha Kokkonen (Director, Explore, discover)
- Jo Harlow (VP, Category Management, Live)
- Liz Schimel (VP, Music)
- Janne Heikkinen (Director, Product Mgmt, Maemo)
- Mark Ollila (Director, Technology and Strategy, Games)
- Jonne Harju (Design)
We hope you feel inspired to get involved, as all of us here on Conversations are keen to have your input.
Write your questions and who they’re directed at in the comments section below.

To Janne Heikkenen: Now that the Maemo OS has been announced to be the future OS going forward, how does that affect the support for the just released N97 and S60?

Indeed Mark. I want to know if there will be an N900 variant that supports 3G on 850/1900MHz bands so we can use it in Canada.
I also want to know what this means for the N97 and when we can expect another firmware update for that.

I have tried to join NokiaWorld09 as a journalist, but unfortunately I was not successful. I’d like to know if there is a accessibility strategy for Symbian respectively Maemo. There are such strategies for the iPhone, Android and the coming Blackberrys. Many blind and visually impaired persons around the world are already using Nokia Symbian devices, but unfortunately they firstly had to buy a screen reader software, which is as expensive as a S60 device. Why is Nokia not interested in this topic? Hopefully there will be accessibility improvements built into the OS in the future. Another question: Why doesn’t Nokia support the open source project Loadstone-GPS, in which blind programmers develop an accessible GPS solution which is already used by many blind persons worldwide. This are just a few questions I would like to have asked on NokiaWorld09. It would be great if participants and Nokia employees would talk about this niche topic as well. The last promising news was that Heikki Koivu told the Indian Economic Times in December 2008 that Nokia plans to design handsets for the disabled, but after this I havn’t heard anything about it:

@Blaxx – I think the better question is when is a pent-band* 3G device coming down the pike, then it would not matter where & what carrier, it would work.
*Ms. Jen’s idea of a Pent-band 3G could send and receive on 850/900/1700/1900/2100.
My question would be:
When can we have an NSeries device that can seriously compete with good compact cameras? Physical Carl Zeiss zoom (like the new Sony compact’s have), great sensor & algorithms, keep the phone bit, keep the internet, keep the GPS, get rid of all the other crap. Basically an Nseries camera phone to compete and beat the cameras on a good compact.
Ms. Jen’s comment for the day:
Yay! Maemo! Yay! Maemo! Yay!
;o)

Hi,
My Question is ” When we can expect to have unified contact list?”. Right now there are multiple Phonebook, OVI contacts, OVI Share contacts, OVI Files, Nokia FriendView, Sportstracker, OVI mail contacts,ImageExchange ….. Did I miss any?
Also can we see Xenon & LED in same device ?

Yes, indeed I agree totally. I either want to see Xenon flash, and a good Xenon flash, or a strong LED light.

Nokia is the world leader in mobile phones. Since the introduxtion of the N97. Nokia’s products have been compared to Apple’s iPhone. I believe Nokia is much more advanced than the dysfunctional iPhone. What can Nokia do or say to put an end to this comparison?

Why does Nokia continue to produce about 50 phone models a year, instead of concentrating on 10-15 phones?

this is probably a marketing strategy when for an example .. me and my friends each have different interests and that varies from one to another (regardless of price) and so when nokia produce a lot of phones it has all our different needs covered and that means more market shares

Perhaps the most intriguing.. c”,
1. Is Nokia really ditching Symbian for Meamo to compete with Apple, RIM and Android in the Smartphone arena.
2. What can thay say about the latest survey results where Symbian ranks low in popularity among Developers. What where your short term and long term plans and strategies to counter this?
3. Why is Nokia taking the backseat in creating new and innovative products while the rest of its competitors where throwing their very best spec phones? Have Nokia reached its tipping point and that their were no other way but down?

If the iPhone 3Gs is the result of Apple’s best then Apple have issues as in hardware terms the iPhone has always lagged having to rely on a pritty GUI to and hype to keep it’s position.

What are the chances that we could acheive a single multi-communational conversation based interface?
I want to be able to communicate with someone and see in one place phone log, sms log, mms log, IM log and e-mail log timelined between me and that person and be able to communicate in all of these formats seamlessly from a simgle interface rather than having to open and use multiple applications.
Not too much to ask for, is it?
I beleive the Palm Pre is doing some of this possibly.

Use an N97 and never heard of the Contacts Bar on a XpressMusic phone.
I’ll have to look into that and want to know why it isn’t on the N97 too if it does all of that.

“ Sir I’m a blogger from Pakistan and an avid Nokia Enthusiast got a couple of questions .
To Christof Hellmis (VP Product, People and Places) & @ Juha Kokkonen (Director, Explore, discover)
* Nokia’s Friend View and OVI Contacts will they be combined so I can see where my friends are and also chat with them ?
* Nokia has launched maps for all over the world but still lacks Pakistan , I’m currently using Garmin XT combined with maps made my Pakistani Freelancers , do Nokia plan to add Pakistan street mapping in OVI Maps ?
* Proximity Sensors via Phone location , when can we see a realtime application for them such as a Widget on N97 homescreen informing me if my friend / contact comes within a particular distance or even visit my city .
To Eric John (Director, Ovi Store)
* Sir , I find Ovi Store to be bothersome , why don’t you go for OS dependent offering like S60v3 S60v5 Fp1 , Fp2 etc instead of Device dependent , a good example will be Nokia Ramadan Apps available for E66 but not for award winning E71
To Liz Schimel (VP, Music) –
* You have launched Nokia Music Store India – it’s still in pilot stage but what will be the competitive pricing in a country where a MP3 Cd can be bought having 100’s of songs for a few dollars – is Comes with Music a possibility – Mr Olli Pekka said so , is it also being planned for Pakistan with our local groups .
To Janne Heikkinen (Director, Product Mgmt, Maemo) –
* Loved the N900 , Loved the OS outlook but when to expect it and what about Application availibiity , iPhone became popular beacuse of it’s Apps what do you have in store for Maemo
To Mark Ollila (Director, Technology and Strategy, Games) :
Are you planning to combine X-Box gaming with Nokia phones given MS / Nokia Alliance ” is much more than Office ” , any news of adding Project Natal type experience to the phone
To Jonne Harju (Design) –
Nokia had been doing a great job in the design dept of upcoming phones any thoughts about using the Aeon featured in Echelon Conspiracy and what about the phone featured in Star Wars , any bits and crumbs on that
Nokia Conversation Thanks for providing a platform to ask questions for those unable to attend the Nokia World 09

1) When is the N97 going to finally get a full kinetic scrolling throughout the UI to make it more appealing to the market?
2) Is Nokia planning on introducing a true competitor to the iPhone like the i8910, but with better specs, maybe with Maemo and the N97 homescreen or S60 5th done properly (full kinetic scrolling, double tap removed and replaced by tap and hold to bring about menu options for said thing)?
3) I realize that a lot of sources keep saying that Nokia is not going to continue in the megapixel race, but that still leaves a whole in their lineup for a 10+ MP device with both LED and Xenon like SE and Samsung have. Are they still going to ignore that market or will they eventually offer something?
4) Are you going to be focusing on making more devices that can actually play a wider array of video formats including 720p-1080p HD videos so we don’t have to spend so much time converting?
5) How about a device with a camera that can record HD video like the i8910 but better?
6) Will there ever be a high end Nokia Nseries, Eseries or midrange touch device offered by AT&T that isn’t ruined by their software engineers? A phone that remains the same as the unlocked version, except that it’s locked to AT&T’s network, a phone given very similar treatment as the iPhone.
7) Is Maemo really going to replace S60 in high end Nokia’s?
Thanks

How about some more applications like the iPhone has, and how about trying to work with the companies that are making apps for the iPhone to access their own products?
Is the rumored video store going to become a reality?

Why NOKIA focuses much on upgrading a phone than innovating and creating a new one? Retaining designs and original taste. Is it worth to keep those things and neglecting innovations?
like for example the 5800 xpressmusic >> 5800 navigation, e71 >> e72, n85 >> n86 and n97 >> n97 mini….

Nokia has traditionally released a very broad range of handsets, with a very broad range of specifications, and correspondingly each handset doesn’t get a great deal of fanfare. In contrast, the current “consumer smartphone” market is becoming almost totally defined by prestige devices like the iPhone, Pre, and Hero. One-off handsets like these make it easy to focus attention on the manufacturer’s software platform, and generate headlines.
My questions are:
Are “blockbuster” handsets important to Nokia’s overall strategy?
What, if anything, does Nokia consider to be its current prestige device?
Is Nokia working away on a prestige device for the upcoming Symbian^2 platform and its successors, in the same way that the N95 generated column inches and developer interest for S60 3rd?

Nokia currently outsources its after-sales customer service in many markets, ranging from large-scale nationwide support firms to independent Nokia Care centres. A 2007 survey cited on your Corporate Responsibility page states:
“Repair time and problem resolution require improvement.”
The response states that:
“We are improving the care quality process, focussing on improvements in repair capacity planning and vendor management.”
To what extent has this improvement been achieved?
Looking forward, in which ways will Nokia improve its customer care experience?
I ask this as a current Nokia user who has had consistently terrible experiences with Nokia’s after-sales support, to the extent that it is an obstacle to my continued loyalty as a customer.

Sir, I have a question on Maemo & Ovi together for Mr. Janne Heikkinen and Mr. Eric John.
Maemo already has its own store at maemo.org/downloads. With Ovi on the other hand, how is it planned for the Maemo based devices. Will these apps be integrated to the Ovi store. I can understand that this would be the ultimate goal (complex one!). But, when will the start happen?
I am interested to see Ovi (maps, contacts, connect, etc.) integration on the Maemo based devices (including the Fremantle based N900).
Also, what about the wonderful “Comes with Music” service for the N900? I hope, N900 gets that service too.

You should ask about “Support of N900″ guys!
How will the first maemo phone be supported?
Earlier Maemo devices were tools for experts who fixed their own little problems. How about N900 support? How will it work?
Will it be better than S60 support?

I could rant and rave on and on about the N97 but I know I’d just be ignored so am gonna keep it short and sweet.
Why do you keep your customers in dark where firmware updates are concerned? Taking into consideration all the problems that the phone shipped with some of which did not get addressed in the first update, one would think Nokia would do more to try and asure the public that all will be taken care of.

Can nokia produce a phone with modular design, whereas people can reconfigure as per their preference, Like attaching larger screen or qwerty keypad or larger battery to the base phone, which has most of the basic things, though in miniaturized manner.
