Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition launches with lifetime guidance
By Mike on 21 August 2009
GLOBAL – Nokia has unveiled a freshly tuned version of its debut touchscreen device, in the shape of the new Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition. Slated to saunter into pockets in the third quarter of 2009, this innovative incarnation of the 5800 comes pre-loaded with a lifetime of voice-guided Drive and Walk navigation licenses for your region.
Keenly tailored for taking you to where you need to be with minimal fuss, the 5800 Navigation Edition comes with all your guidance software set up, and as it comes with an in-box car charger and Nokia car kit, it has been designed to become your satnav savvy passenger in seconds.
As many of you know, here on Conversations we’re keen followers of location and context aware services, so it’s exciting to witness the emergence of a device so perfectly primed to explore this new territory of services so freely from the moment it’s unboxed and sat in your palm. Alongside it’s voice-guided navigation talents (including valuable local traffic warnings), it comes pre-loaded with the latest version of Ovi Maps pre-installed, enabling you to pinpoint nearby points of interest and relevant useful info, such as local weather reports and the best place to grab a bite in your area.
The 5800 Navigation Edition is inked in the diary for the third quarter of 2009 and is estimated to cost 285 Euros before all the usual regional taxes and subsidies stuff.

I assume that OVI Maps 3.0 S60v5 version is being desperatetly modified at the moment then, as it has been pulled from the Nokia Maps website in the last few days due to major issues on the N97 including (self-deleting map data and very poor GPS stability).
The Nokia Maps site now shows Nokia Maps 2 as the latest version for the N97. A downgrade from last week, when it showed OVI Maps 3.0 for the N97.
I assume that OVI Maps 3.0 will return to S60v5 handsets by the release of this new 5800 phone model.

So this is the phone that we all thought was going to be the 5900 in that leaked pic… any info on the CPU/RAM?

Well, suppose it’s a good offer for someone who might need a gps. But, ehem, there’s this “XpressMusic” label issue again. Why, in this day and age of the trumpeted Ovi-fabulousness Nokia even needs that kind of totally sticker-level labeling for the young-hip-music-oriented peeps (who are not that easy and who probably won’t buy this edition of the phone anyway) which again absolutely contradicts the “taking you to where you need to be with minimal fuss”. There is fuss, because the all these segment-stickers are giving mixed signals. I’m just saying it’s a waste of resources, that’s all.

I’ve had my 5800 for a few months now and I really enjoy both the device and Ovi Maps. With talk of a lifetime license, I’m curious as to whether current 5800 owners will be able to buy into this option. As I don’t use the driving navigation all that often, the current pricing schemes don’t make much sense for me; however, if the price were right a lifetime license could be more attractive.

I recommend that idea: I just got Garmin mobile XT two days ago and it ROCKS on my 5800XM!! This app comes with maps you pre-load to the SD card like OVI using a PC app called Mapsource (program also allows for you to find (easily) and save favorite locations to 5800). Also the Garmin mobile XT app totally replaces the need for google maps all together (unless you need streetview) because it has google search capabilities built right into the app’s interface – also search for (and actually find) addresses easily then choose to navigate to them with 1 click. App comes pre-loaded on sd with driving voice navigation in a ton of languages (didn’t count them all) so take your pick!
>>NOTE:
Driving directions with garmin are better then OVI maps 3.0 (i’ve used nav with both OVI 2.0 and 3.0) because the app takes into consideration real-time traffic and road construction, and there are more options for different types road “avoidance’s” (like ferries, highways, etc..), also it tells you right when to turn like OVI nav. Displays areas with heavy traffic, fuel prices, and flight status.
I say get a third party app like Garmin and keep the name: XpressMusic – it sounds much nicer than “Navigation Edition”

Nokia 5800 is nowhere near the iphone or htc i think nokia should come up with some next level phone to compete with iphone. Upcoming Nokia Aeon ( http://www.domesticutilities.com/aeon.htm ) looks good.

What does “lifetime” mean? A lifetime of being able to use it, or inclusive of map updates for a lifetime. Will I see myself driving down a bypass while satnav tells me I’m in a field? Some clarification.

hi
The previous nokia 5800 phones were available with very ugly look only. they look like a cheap plastic toy. why does nokia make such ugly phones sometimes? features are not everything. I have a nokia 6300 which is a beautiful phone, I was thinking on replacing it to the 5800 original version, but i changed my mind because it was so ugly when i checked it in the shop.
the 5530 looks much nicer, but it has no GPS, which would be important for me, since i travel a lot (not by car, not just locally, but abroad).
The new 5800 navigation edition seems to be a very nicely looking elegant phone, much much nicer than the original 5800. when can i buy it, when will it be available in UK???

I’ve bought the Nokia 5800 a month ago. It’s a great phone! I wish there come an update which give us kinetic scrolling and a Homescreen like the homescreen of the N97…

it seems like it was cancelled by nokia?
they promised it for Q3 which is july-september. now its mid october…
its a shame.
i wanted to buy this, but i will have to buy something else if they dont release it soon. maybe a samsung jet. IMO other nokia phones are not competitive with the 5800-nav.edition in price/appearance/functionality in the same time.
people at nokia dont know that? or just dont care?

It is now available in the US from Nokia. Given that the Xpress music is such a poor navigation device when you rely solely on the internal GPS as opposed to enabling the assisted GPS, I assume this will be no different. If you do not have a data plan with your carrier or are out of cell tower range you might as well take out the folding papers maps.

why is it relesed only in 2-3 countries????????

so, why hold it for months?

the 5800 is a super phone. it looks great, works great, and isn’t insanely expensive. i got mine for a good price from gsmallover.com. it came in 3 days, and i didn’t have to pay for shipping..AND it was unlocked. very good deal. granted..it’s not as good as the n97 or the iphone..but again, it’s cheaper!! and it’s still a great phone.
