Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop unveiled
By Mike on 24 August 2009
GLOBAL – Nokia has just whipped the dust sheet off the Nokia Booklet 3G. A brand new breed of portable device for Nokia, this mini laptop PC sees the company step foot on freshly cut turf, and we’re a little dumb-struck with excitement at the prospect of the experience that this bite-size Booklet promises to deliver when it arrives. Not to mention what it means bigger picture, and how this product could affect the entire mobile landscape for the better (we’ll save that for another story), but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
First, let’s get down off our tip-toes, take a deep breath, and soak up all the initial details on what the upcoming Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop is set to deliver when it lands on laps. Read on for every shred of info currently available on this landmark new product, and get the first close-up look at the Nokia Booklet 3G mini laptop in our photo gallery.
The new Nokia Booklet 3G will be a Windows-based machine, supported by an efficient Intel Atom processor that promises the performance of a full-function PC. It’s efficiency credentials are boldly punctuated with battery life that stretches up to 12 hours (with normal daily use, of course – don’t expect a 12-hour Quake-fest off a single hit of juice).
Turning our attention to mini matters of a tape-measure nature, the Nokia Booklet 3G comes toting a glass 10.1-inch HD display (it has an HDMI port for HD video out). This lives within its smart aluminium shell which measures in at just 2cm thin and tips the scales at around a kilogram to ensure it’s extremely portable.
Connecting at speed is crucial with a product of this nature, so the Booklet 3G has been designed with fast downloading and uploading front of mind – it’s 3G/HSPA ready for rapid mobile broadband anywhere-access on the move. Wi-Fi has also been wedged into it’s slim body. Plus, it supports hot-swappable SIM card functionality.
It’s talents don’t end there, with Nokia’s mini laptop PC also featuring onboard assisted-GPS with Ovi Maps neatly sat in the passenger seat. There’s a single front-facing camera nestled above the 10.1-inch HD screen for video chat, with Bluetooth and a built-in SD card reader also making appearances.
You may be wondering why Nokia is adding to its range of products with an ultra portable laptop PC? Well, Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices, Kai Oistamo, summed it up simply as follows:
“A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility. We are in the business of connecting people and the Nokia Booklet 3G is a natural evolution for us. Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling. In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal.”
There’s already a lot of info to digest here, but there are still more details to come at Nokia World 09 on 2 September – expect official word on where the Nokia Booklet 3G will be available, news on how much it’ll cost, along with a detailed list of specs for the number-hungry among us.
In the meantime, share your opinions on the new Nokia Booklet 3G in the comments section below, and be sure to follow all our coverage of Nokia World 09 right here on Conversations.

Let’s see another laptop with un-inspired design. Does the world really need a 1KG mobile phone?? (Didn’t we have those already in the early 90s!!!) I find it amazing that people continue to talk up this. What does Nokia bring to the table that will get people excited? 3G? We already have that and anyone can buy the mobile service and add it to their existing laptop.
The design is a clunker–in no way even approaches the elegance of the MacBooks or the ground breaking interface design of the the i-Phone and this is why it will ultimately fail.
Nokia is still stuck in the engineering mentality that pack it full of feature after feature and people will buy it–well the market proves that is not what people want. People flocked to the i-Phone when it was released because of the design–even when it didn’t have 3G (as many of Nokia’s products had). If you want to succeed history has taught many companies a hard lesson and I predict the same lesson is coming to Nokia–LISTEN and Understand the Customer needs and wants. Copy or steal what is selling and improve on it–Look at Samsung, LG and HTC–all doing this.
Why didn’t Nokia come out with a copy and improved i-Phone immediately after it’s launch (say with 3G–now there would have been a coup)–it’s because of their arrogance and the belief that they are “superior” engineers and engineering is what people want. They just don’t get it and won’t until they fall into obscurity and are struggling to survive (take a look a Palm and you see Nokia’s future).
When a consumer electronics company fails to excite people on an emotional level, they are doomed. The only advantage Nokia currently has is a price advantage–and anyone picking up a mid to low level Nokia phone can feel the cheapness in it. Visiting recently Nokia’s own store in Chennai, India, it was filled with broken phones on display. There you have the level of quality. Even the low end will certainly vanish in the short-term as the Chinese and Indians gear up the competition. Any first year business student will tell you that a competitive advantage on price alone will not last.

It looks nice, the specs are OK except for one thing Nokia: you forgot to put in an NVidia ION. No-one should entertain the idea of a netbook that doesn’t pack an Ion GPU. Lead on, Samsung 510, Asus 1201N, Lenovo S12, HP Mini 311.

The video posted here seems to show Windows 7, which is a fantastic sign – the battery life, if true, trumps my Asus EeePC 1000HE, and makes this baby a must-have. The only ‘ifs’ right now are the price and availability.

What kind of multimedia capability will this have I wonder? The day someone makes a mini netbook that ALSO has the capacity to edit video and work with music and all creative media – then I´ll be very interested..
I´m sure the technology is there somewhere but simply not on the market.. yet..
Now THAT really would be news!

Beautiful design! Looking forward to numbers on the resolution. Battery life sounds like a dream. One thing I think of though: Hackintosh! The sleek aluminum body, glass screen makes this the closest netbook (Sorry, Booklet) to fit in with the Apple designs. Wonder what it’s compatibility will be in those terms?

What exactly is different about this thing? It doesn’t look like they’ve brought anything “Nokia” to the product. Why would I buy this netbook over one from an actual, established computer manufacturer?
This kind of reminds me of when Polaroid went bankrupt and someone bought the brand name to stick on all kinds of other, unrelated products.

Hello Nokia, welcome to the game!
I’ve been on my soapbox for a while saying that Nokia should be exploiting it’s superior manufacturing and hardware design to build laptops and PC that strike back at Apple. If this Booklet delivers as promised, then they’ll have a solid competitor for the Macbook Air, and they’ll have outclassed ALL the other windows based netbooks already out there.
Considering the rumored switch from Symbian to Maemo OS, new tablets, and this new Booklet, I think that Nokia has unexpectedly changed direction more quickly than any of us thought was possible.
Good on you Nokia, and keep it coming.

A competitor to the MacBook Air??? Really??? Please….bring me anybody on the planet who could look at this “mini-laptop” and a macbook air side by side and actually pick this…
Sorry Nokia, you tried but failed. This is too big to be a phone and too useless to be a laptop. It serves no place in this world and will be long forgotten in…oh…4 months… when the MacBook Tablet is released. You could have had something if you had made this a tablet computer, given it a multi-touch screen, and not bound it to running the disaster of an OS that is Windows. It’s just another “Pre”-like product but this time instead of starting in 2nd place you’re starting in 4th of 5th.

Considering how well netbooks are selling, and how badly the MacBook Air handles communications (that is to say, it just doesn’t), I think you’re just wrong.
I’m speaking out of turn, because I won’t be seeing the device first hand until next week, but it appears to have the fit and finish of a high end Nokia device, which puts it on par with Apple, but will likely have carrier subsidies that get the price into the US$100-$300 price range. A MacBook Air will cost you between US$1500-$1800 (without extras), so I just don’t see how you can compare.
You’re comment about Windows being a “disaster” would seem to put you in Apple fanboy category. I like Apple laptops, but I don’t drink their Cool-Aid. Not everything they do is inspired, and Windows 7 is a good OS.
Getting back your original question of what planet you’d be from to pick a Booklet over a MacBook Air, I’d have to say it would be the planet of I’m-not-going-to-pay-$1600-more-for-an-Apple-netbook. Street price for the Booklet is likely to fall around US$200 (with a carrier contract), which would make the Air 9 times more expensive, and it still wouldn’t have a WWAN connection. Just do the math, pragmatists will choose a Booklet, and Apple zealots will choose Apple whether the product is better suited to purpose or not.

I have two Macbooks (aluminum and white jacked up to 500GB hard drives) and an iMac and do Final Cut video and audio work…. I can’t wait to get a Booklet!
When it comes to video, audio and graphic design work, I think I’ll always stick with Macs. When it comes to social networking, word processing and even spreadsheets, all the cool apps are practically platform independent via the browser or os-dependent clients; Mac vs. PC vs. Linux is becoming irrelevant for most stuff. With Ovi apps and Google apps like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, etc., and their collaborative features, who needs MobileMe or Microsoft Office?
Like earlier today I was at a neighbor’s place, she was having problems writing a resume in Notepad and couldn’t convert it to a Word document since she didn’t have Office installed (couldn’t find key), pretty stuck. So, from her PC I just logged into Google docs, uploaded her resume, edited it, then exported as a Word doc, no problem. That’s powerful and empowering, and Google just earned another new fan today.
The Macbook Air is an overpriced toy. The Booklet looks like it’ll be the most solid and full-featured Windows 7 netbook on the market and a fantastic portable tool for those into net apps, which is probably where software is headed anyway. Metal Nokia Booklets, I love it! With the Booklet’s HDMI, I’m already anticipating get a couple of Booklets, upgrading them to 500 GB hard drives, installing iTunes and using them a video player devices; that’s a big cost savings over using 13 inch MacBook Pros or Airs.

Dear MacFan.
I wouldn’t be so sure about that. There are a LOT of windows users who don’t want to spend time on getting the hang of a mac. Especially in the business world where people need a travel laptop. Why if most corporates have windows based pc’s would you buy a mac laptop for traveling? Most design agencies have Mac’s, true but big corporates: no way. They want cost effective solutions and then a mac is WAY out of the league.
Yes you can install windows on mac’s, but still not a lot of people feel convy about it.
I worked at an international bank opperating in 44 countries, all the managers etc who travel a lot had mini pc’s, not mac’s.
Nokia: good luck with this product it looks slick!

The hardware might be nice, but they don’t own the platform. How are they innovating here? How will this help them down the road? How does this help me?
Now if they had re-thought the netbook with a new advanced version of Symbian allowing the Booklet to use the 3G connection of any Nokia smartphone with no-configuration tethering, and released a suite of Office-compatible productivity apps which worked as well on their Symbian phones as on the Booklet… well now we’re talking.
As it is now they’re just another manufacturer in an extra low-margin portion of the overall low-margin PC market.

Dude, have you been paying attention? The rumor is that Nokia is moving away from Symbian towards Linux (Maemo 5) for their handsets, we’ll have confirmation of whether that’s true or not next week.
As to Office clones, why would anyone think that’s better than using the actual MS Office suite?
Enhanced communications is probably something that we’ll see when we test the device, but given Nokia’s pedigree, it’s a safe bet that it will be easy to get online with the device directly or via a handset connection.
So how exactly do they not own the platform? The OS software is a commodity, and even was when they used Symbian, even though nearly nobody else wanted the Symbian OS. What exactly has changed? It’s just a different OS provider. Nokia will undoubtedly customize with enhanced communications, you’d be a fool to expect anything else. And don’t forget their other major initiatives like the Ovi store and Comes with Music, I just can’t believe that Nokia’s Booklet will be as stripped down as an Eee PC.
Lastly, remember the channel that Nokia owns. This device configured with a 3.5G data plan will be the lead offering from carriers worldwide in this segment. In the US Dell and HP are already offering netbooks, and HP is selling via Verizon, why wouldn’t you expect Nokia to do the same, especially in markets where they have much stronger carrier relationships than Dell and HP could ever hope for.
Nokia’s making a smart move here, pragmatic and (hopefully) well executed.

If it was an ARM notebook with Maemo I would understand what is saying “Nokia” in this notebook. i686 Maemo netbook would also be an interesting experiment. But if Nokia partnered with all perpetual enemies (they never really needed relationships with Microsoft and Intel before) and there are no options unique to Nokia – the product seems much less attractive.

So… it’s a netbook? Congratulations?
I’m not quite sure that your level of gush is appropriate for what looks to be the same hardware/software that’s been available for many months now:
“…we’re a little dumb-struck with excitement at the prospect of the experience that this bite-size Booklet promises to deliver when it arrives. Not to mention what it means bigger picture, and how this product could affect the entire mobile landscape for the better…”
That’s a whole lotta hype, for a netbook running Windows. Thumbs to to aluminum shell, but really that’s the only differentiating factor.
Are there any surprises not contained in the video of the 3D model?

Haha!
I blogged about this potential way back in April this year. Although i thought that Symbian would hail its roots and come to the netbook scene like the Psion of yesteryear.
http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/strategic-implications-of-nokias-intention-to-enter-the-netbook-pc-market/
Either way this culminates the corporate deal between Nokia and Intel some 2mths back and also offers the portable PC market a huge advancement to grow in the likes of what Apple did for Intel > giving birth to the Atom cpu.
Nokia’s biggest strengths is its relationsips with the worlds major cellular providers, and giving HD capable netbook the ability to have 3.5G along with a corporate deal around the world then you have a winner. Corporate deals for netbooks are only with 1 model and 1 manufacturer/brand (really brand) with US providers and users MUST sign new contracts for 1-3yrs to get a netbook priced at barely $50-100US cheaper than retail price; simply a useless deal indeed. If Nokia can offer this netbook on Vodafone, TIM, Orange, O2 and other world providers for $100 Euro’s or less then you’ll see its revenue LEAP like wildfire. The competition is awaiting tablet announcement rumors from Apple this September. If this doesn’t get official and Nokia can push this release rapidly to market – then they have time to catch Asus, Acer, Samsung, etc with their pants down since they all stopped production on new netbooks until after Apple’s WWDC; 7days after Nokia World 2009.
Nokia ship this ready for wireless providers across Europe on Sept 2nd, and also ship the E72 and you have the makings of increasing back your marketshare, revenues, and profits.

I don’t want to say where I heard this, but I heard in the U.S. that the Booklet may be locked to AT&T. Please tell me this isn’t true!!!
I’m more excited about getting a Nokia Booklet than any other rumored Apple device, and I’m a Mac person. I’d love to have a Nokia netbook with the HDMI, all the Ovi stuff and what I expect to be excellent Nokia build quality. I hope the Booklet will handle T-Mobile 3G frequency like the upcoming Nokia N900 (that I’m also dying to get). Finally, I hope I can go down to the Chicago Nokia Flagship Store and buy the Booklet UNLOCKED!!! (although I could deal with it being locked to T-Mobile as one of their customers). But locked to AT&T?? No way! Let Apple and AT&T play the exclusivity game with the friggin’ iPhone.
I’ve bought my e61i, e71, and 5800 all unlocked from Nokia, and really, really hope I can do the same with the Booklet. The Booklet would be my first switch to a Windows product since 2003 when I got my first Apple Powerbook.
I love you Nokia for mobile phones and Ovi apps, and never sipped the Apple iPhone Kool-Aid, so please sell an unlocked Booklet. Even if it doesn’t work on T-Mobile 3G, I’ll get by on wifi and EDGE.
Thanks in advance!!!

This is a weird photo with no context — is it as big as a deck of playing cards, like an N97? Or the size of a coffee table? Should be in the hand or something.

Excellent mobile computing is what the nature of my work profoundly demands. I am currently running a website that helps U.S. based consumers receive free grocery coupons The nature of my business demands that I am always connected to the internet while on the go.
Although I already have an HP 2133 mini notebook, which, despite its tons of advantages, has certain limitations. It can go for about three hours(after full charge) on power saver mode while I am browsing the internet and uploading and updating grocery coupons related data on my website. But, unfortunately 3 hours is not enough for me. Furthermore, it may not be extremely durable. The consumers who visit my website looking for free grocery coupons, may not tolerate late updates and this would not be good for business.
Nokia booklet 3G would be the product of my choice if, in addition to the longer single charge battery life, it would be highly durable too.
