499us-dollar will be the right price
There is nothing new to this netbook but the manufacturer (and it’s even OEM)

Note to everyone leaving comments on this price being incredibly high:
I just walked into a Best Buy today and saw this computer on the shelf (not yet purchasable) for $599 American dollars. $299 with the an AT&T contract. $600 is better than 575 Euros ($845) at any rate and much more in-line with the rest of the netbook market.

1GB RAM? What the hell, seriously? I don’t care if it is Win7 Basic, it will struggle on 1 GB. And an Intel Atom Z means its soldered RAM, so no upgrading possible.
MAJOR falling over point for an otherwise fantastic looking product.
Also can someone clarify what “Data calls only” means for the 3G modem?

I strongly agree. If product is nice and well made, price isn’t the question. I would buy anyway.
BUT soldered 1GB memeory is show stopper.
Another think I would want to see is somekind SSD HD. Doesn’t have to be so big but netbook use it is must.

I don’t mind the price (too much) but only 1GB of RAM? With 4GB it would be perfect for me (because of small factor and HDMI included) but what you can do with 1GB RAM nowadays? Deal breaker.
Reply
September 2nd, 2009 at 9:45 am
Soldered RAM might be a dealbreaker. The price is not so crazy when compared to EU prices for netbooks. It’s a little more expensive but you get GPS, SIM-card slot and a metal casing. Actually, it’s a pretty fair price. Those ultra cheap ASUS netbooks go for 300 EUR including taxes, which is 430 USD. A new 300 USD netbook in Europa? Impossible.

1.8″ HDD will be slow as well, benchmark comparisons i’ve done to compare the Compaq 702EA with the Samsung NC10 shows the disk is half the speed from the factory in the Compaq with the 1.8″
Then the NC10 can be upgraded to a 7200 disk making it even faster.
Only 1GB of RAM is going to be poor as well, XP wants more than that, to release a 1GB system now really is poor form

Yes indeed, several netbooks do use SATA HD’s like my IdeaPad S10. SSD’s are also in use, but lower capacity ones.

Awww. I was really interested, but the soldered down 1 GB is huge turn off. Is that enough for speedy use of Win7?
Reply
September 2nd, 2009 at 10:37 am
I understand that 1Gb of RAM is all that the chipset can support so even if you could expand the RAM is couldn’t be used anyway. In this case soldered is better as it’s footprint is smaller and the connectivity more reliable.

September 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 am
Jose, read again.
Under “Seamless connectivity” it says “3G/ HSPA with hot swappable simcard”. Now does that sound even better than HSDPA? Upload speeds are faster too, rather than just download speed, (if I’m not mistaken).

Here’s another vote for Nokia getting most of it right (not sure about that price for something that gets left in hotel rooms when you go out for the evening) but then making a total disaster of the RAM aspect.
What’s one of the most popular netbooks – the Samsung NC10. Why – because of long usage time AND easily being able to upgrade to 2GB.
These days only the cheap rubbish has 1GB with no support for 2GB.

Really, has Nokia not learned from the HP Mini 1000 with its slow 1.8″ drive? Or is Nokia not paying attention at all and thinking in cell phone terms when they decided to have just 1GB of RAM …on a PC?
I don’t care if this thing is carved out of a piece solid aluminum or a piece of solid gold, BUT 1GB RAM + ultra slow HDD creates more human suffering for this world! Change it before it’s too late:
2GB RAM + 64GB SSD
Please Nokia before you start to wonder what went wrong with your first netbook launch… Apple must be laughing at your cluelessness. But I care enough to offer my harsh words.

You kidding? 575€?
the only improvements respect another netbooks are the gps and 3G and the HDMI output wich seems unuseful because this is an Atom based PC…a DVI output was fine! If you buy an asus Eeepc 1002HA, a 3G USB modem and a BT gps…you will be paying less than 575€ and you will have a thinner pc!

This looks beautiful and I have no problems with the price since it appears to be a “premium unit.” However, one thing that scares me is that it appears to be limited to 1Gb of RAM.
I have a tendency to wring every last drop out of the PCs that I own and found the hard way that a RAM limitation is the ultimate kiss of death. Perhaps Windows 7 will let you use an SD card as RAM like Vista but I’m not sure I want to pay up-front to find out how effective it is. Also, I will lose that feature if I decide that I don’t want to run Windows anymore as I have in successfully rejuvenated many tired old lappies with Ubuntu. Sadly, if 1Gb is the max, I will have to look elsewhere for a new notebook.

The list price doesn’t matter- the idea is you buy it on a 18 or 24 month plan with 3g sim.

This thing should cost 200$, have 4GB and 250GB SSD.
Get real people. This thing has alu case, amazing battery life, the entire wireless alphabet soup, GPS, Accelerometer, HDMI, 1280×720 screen and Win7. It’s much more than most netbooks have to offer to date. So that introductory price is reasonable.
Also, most users (the ones that haven’t heard of the Booklet 3G yet) don’t give a damn about RAM upgrade since 1GB will work fine on Win7, doing what a netbook usually does.

I said when this was announced it would sink or swim based on the pricing strategy. It’s going to sink at this price.
Sure, the specs are a bit over the average for a netbook but not enough to justify charging almost double that of the current market leading Samsung NC10.
If Nokia want to play in the mini-laptop arena, they need to produce a mini-laptop spec’d device, then they could justify a premium price. But a netbook with fixed RAM and a few bells and whistles isn’t worth the £500 before tax now circulating the web.

A similarly configured Dell Mini10 (a comparison that makes MUCH MORE sense because it is using same Atom Z CPU and Poulsbo chipset) costs about 500-600 euro. So why the senseless whining about the Booklet’s price???

As I read others article, this Booklet is cost around $800 in US/Canada. Who are going to paid this for a netbook..? Look at Sony Vaio P is a good example…! This price can buy a laptop. Z530 processor and 120HD for such cost is too high in netbook market, even Nokia has 3G & GPS….who’s pocket has not a 3G or GPS cellphone nowaday…! For me, its look like an enlarge Nokia N’s cellphone instead. There are alot of good choices out there in the market and only cost $400 to $500. I don’t think Nokia do a good work in the netbook marketing research….good luck for them

When i first looked at the spesifications i thought that some one at Nokia have smoked something they shouldnt have smoked!
The “Booklet 3G” looks good, but the spesification is comme ci comme ca!
RAM: 1 GB, DDR2, 533 Mhz, soldered down – Sounds crappy!
Regarding to Intel: Intel® System Controller Hub US15W Chipset Max Memory 2 GB sow why only 1 GB?
HDD: 120 GB, 1.8”/5mmH/SATA, 8 MB cache, 4200 RPM
Not so strange if the batterylife is good if you pur in a losy 4200rpm drive.. It should have been a least a 2.5″ drive
And why is the hdmi 1.2 and not 1.3
Theese three tings could be reasons for me to rather go for another netbook..

This is one of the best well hardware equipped netbook that i have come across. I was just about decided to purchase one for my self, how ever there were a couple of let downs that did not make it worth buying. First of all its a huge disappointment knowing that it is not compatible for RAM Upgrade. Secondly there is no option between HHD and SSD storage. Lastly the keyboard dose not seem to be to a comfortable keyboard for effective typing. Other thoughts: Would be nice to see this netbook with touch screen enabled.

…there’s some stuff in it, that keeps me confused:
- why soldered in RAM? (btw, workaround exists: Win7 could allocate HDD space for paging up RAM operations);
- why 1.8 HDD? High speed SSD is much more desired.
- where is RJ-45?! That’s a great miss in CONNECTIVITY, COMPATIBILITY and COMMONALITY, Nokia dramatically forgot this one to implement, I think.

Great feedback here! Thanks!
As you may imagine, balancing portability, power, performance, price and whatever other “p” you can think of to build a winning product is as much art as science.
While we think we have a great first product (and hope you try it and agree), I would be the first to admit that we can do more.
So rest assured that your input has been duly noted, and we will do our best to live up to your expectations. Please keep the suggestions coming. =)

Since you are welcoming suggestions, here is mine. I got a HSDPA connection and I often change the sim card between my phone and my laptop (usb modem) The continuous sliding in and out of the sim card has damaged it once in the past. My suggestion is to have a “clamp down” style of sim holder to minimize sliding damage to the sim card, so that people with both voice and data services can switch cards between their mobile phone and their netbook.

I am hoping for GSM voice enabled in a future booklet. Then you can really use this device instead of a phone when the need arises. While working mobile I would love to be able to be able to take calls with a headset instead of a cellphone. Just one less device to carry around.

I am looking for a netbook to use for checking webmail and making Skype calls while sitting in airports or traffic jams. This looks pretty good for $300US but I do have reservations about 1Gb memory. The slow disk drive doesn’t concern me, and neither does the data plan charge. My ATT 8525 has the same requirement. Still, a more up-to-date set of telecomm specs would seal the deal. As far as the other griping goes, in Texas we say that there are some people who would gripe if you hung them with a new rope.

1GB of DDR RAM on my Dell Dimension 4600 and Vista Ultimate made it pretty slow. And the video card is a fanless Intel GMA 500. 1GB DDR2 RAM is fine. Also don’t whine about the RAM because we occasionally receive less than enough stuff in life.

also, the unit online states that it would be shipped with “starter or home premium” and to the best of anyones knowledge, it is only showing starter in the stores right now.
can anyone verify if it will still be able to render the aero effects?

Other than pretty sparse RAM this looks sick. I can’t wait to make it a hackintosh! It even looks like a Macbook Mini.

also,
in playing with the booklet, i could not figure out how to find the a-gps or integrated nokia maps on the unit.
there was an icon, but it just takes you to the ovi.com login page.
maybe the demos do not have the gps module in them?

I think it was a big mistake to only give it 1GB. Windows wants it’s share of RAM, and Ovi Suite wants quite a bit of RAM too, and if Ovi Music run for a while, you will get over the 1GB limit quite easily, so the swapfile will have to work a lot and slow down the system. 2GB of RAM would have been so much much better.

the 12hour battery life probably comes from the sucky 4200rpm hdd!
they should have stuck some SDD-s in for that price!
