N900 wins Nokia World 09 popularity contest
By Mike on 07 September 2009
STUTTGART, Germany – Last week’s Nokia World show brought with it a heap of new products, intriguing solutions and a deluge of fascinating comments and debate. Since NW09 we’ve received over 680 comments and trackbacks on stories we’ve run right here on Conversations. An overwhelming amount – we’re so pleased to be one of the homes to all your interesting and insightful opinions. So please keep them coming (which reminds me, we need to announce the comment of the week winner – as you can imagine, no easy task what with the mountain of comments last week, hence the delay folks).
Following all the exciting announcements last week and in the run up to Nokia World 09 we asked you to vote for your favourite product, and received a record number of votes – 2,670 of them. So continue reading to find out which new Nokia device got you voting in your droves.
Stealing the spotlight with the lion’s share of the vote is the Nokia N900. Nokia’s debut Linux-based Maemo 5 device earned 1,804 votes, giving it a staggering 68%.

In second place, with 15% of the vote, is the Nokia Booklet 3G. The mini laptop PC stunned many when it was first unveiled, and it’s full specs list has triggered a wealth of interest, excitement and controversy. It earned my vote, but couldn’t compete with the popularity sparked by its smaller N900 sibling.

Third on the podium, and close behind the Booklet, is the new Nokia X6 entertainment phone with 11% of the vote. The flagship X series device (the first device to replace the XpressMusic range), the new X6 was a keenly discussed favourite on the show floor at Nokia World 09.

Next up is the Nokia N97 mini with 6% of the vote, followed by the Nokia X3 with 1%.

not even vanjoki’s astonishing underselling of the n900 could hinder the excitement towards this fantastic maemo device! come christmas already! sorry, october i mean. it’s almost unbearable to wait for the pre-order to turn into an actual device in my hand.

actually, it would be nice if nokia would produce a little sister to the n900: a thin, sleek device running maemo 5 for those that don’t care as much about root access and open source. kind of like a stripped down n900, much like the iphone, but a little cheaper, say 300 euros.

Nokia should not produce smaller variants of N900. They should innovate and create a distinctive device. Focus for different people.
N900 is awesome and lets wait for another days, weeks and months to show his talent.

frankly speakin’ when checking out the specs we clearly see its an amazing device with great possibilities.
but one thing that hmmm lets say for me personaly the negative point is its size!!!!some kinda too big for a regular sized pocket specialy for me who’s in jeans even for my job always on da move and actually i have 2 nokia phone N82 & a 5800 Xps Music!!!
Would the N900 have its junior like N97mini!!!an N900 Mini with a 3.5` screen will be pocket friendly.
Another MAJOR point is the use of the HW graphic Acc!!!!the some N series phones are equiped but the tech is not used…:(
so please try to optimise the HW on board and let us have a device with a high value to money ratio.
by the way good job for the N900
peace ya

.thomas: root access and open source are unlikely to be responsible for the phone’s size. It might be possible to use hw similar to n97 mini though (not sure what the differences are), even removing the keyboard might be an option.

Timo, you’re right about that, but i was trying to illustrate how i think there is a potential for a wider audience for maemo, assuming expansion of maemo is desirable.
for example, *yesterday* a colleague asked me what phone should he buy next. he has a semi-old basic nokia phone and had a look so far at the e71 and iphone. he’s not that much into technology, but he sure appreciates some degree of connectivity and some degree of style, especially user interface. but when i told him about n900, he thought it looked nice, got some of the technical details (computer in your pocket, well, ok) – and then there was the size. it’s quite thick, he noticed. and i could tell that it was significant for him.
so i’m thinking that maemo might find a niche also with devices that are slimmer and a little cheaper, by not being filled with as much hardware features as the n900.

I think is the coolest phone ever made by Nokia, but I’m still in a middle of choosing either N900 OR E72? Any suggestion guys? thanks!

same thing here.. i really need a video call availability, since im doing business in that area. anyone knows about availability of video call in n900? using 3g and stuff?
and i always use E series, since its meant for business. i dont know about N series.. i mainly use my phone for mails, browsing, chats, and processing documents such as editing text, charts, etc. is the N series are as viable as the E series in this term? if its not? can someone share the weaknesses of the N series? thanks.

Too bad it has a phone in it.
I have an S60 phone and the N800. They complement each other. Now the N900 has a phone. I’m not gonna be able to upgrade. I do not need 2 phones. I wish Nokia will make another Internet Tablet that will look the same as the N800 with 2 SD card slots, Movable Hidden Camera, Front Stereo Speakers, etc.

Ability to attach a joystick to play games with would be nice,. as a D-Pad on left is a must for most Video Games !!
Hope this happens soon…
Thanx.
