Your favourite experimental Nokia app
By Mike on 06 October 2009
GLOBAL – Tucked away in a lesser-visited corridor on the Nokia Beta Labs site live a collection of exciting experimental apps. Last week we drew your attention to them in our video poll (a couple of which we know have already triggered your enthusiasm), to find out which of these innovative shards of software earned your vote as best in show. Read on to find out which app stormed to the top of the class.
Romping home to victory with 34% of your vote was Nokia Photo Browser, a slick little app that lets you scour your snaps easily and in style courtesy of some handsome 3D effects. Photo Browser is one of the best scoring apps on Beta Labs in the reader ratings stakes with an average of over four-stars after 43 reviews, so you’re in good company voting it as a Conversations reader favourite. We’ve been fans of Photo Browser since it first emerged on Beta Labs back in March, and have since posted a couple of pieces on it, first exploring the touchscreen version for N97 and 5800, followed by a story on the non-touchscreen version. Here’s a video of it in action starring our very own Nokia Conversations graduate Charlie Schick…
Second place went to the Handwriting Calculator with 13%, closely followed by Nokia Image Exchange (read more) with 13% of your vote.
The fourth spot went to ‘other answer’ and a bunch of you took the time to scribble down your favourite apps, and although it’s not technically in the ‘experimental’ section on Beta Labs we’re happy to reveal that Sports Tracker was by far the most popular app listed by many of you.
Next in the popularity battle was Nokia Magnifier (read more) with 8%, tailed by Nokia Easy Meet with 6%. Each earning 5% of the vote were the new Nokia Braille Reader and the Nokia Kamppi trial (read the full story). Nokia Green Explorer followed with 4%, leaving Audio Smileys trailing with just 2%.
What do you think to the experimental apps listed and how they ranked in our video poll? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I would say Nokia Image Exchange may of got more results if compatibility expanded to S50 5th edition devices

The results go to show that people want updated replacements of existing apps rather than completely new apps.
I personally would love to see the photo browser expanded and eventually replace the gallery or photos app on the current phones.
Other apps are in desperate need of a revamp too. The messaging system used in S60 has barely changed over the last five years. How about a beta of a new messaging client that handles SMS & MMS? Add features that such as word prediction, smilies (emoticons) and other features to bring it up to date. We’ve had our fill of IM, email and social networking apps so now is the time to improve the basics!
I’m sure people would love an app like that, especially now that symbian based phones are mainstream.

Hello. I have a mission to accomplish and don´t have a camera plus my cellphone is falling apart. (too old): my report about traffic accidents related to the bad mantainance of streets, freeways, routes in Buenos Aires will be delivered to the BA gov.in Buenos Aires and broadcasted in CNN in Spanish.( I have the approval to do so).Would you like your brand to be mentioned? It doesn´t requier any specific model. Only need a local contact, your permit for any model you consider( since I worked recently for JWT, your advertising agency here as a free lance doing a favour… but they didn+t reply.)Will send you a copy of my job. Best regards, M.

Let’s see Nokia Magnifier and Active Notes ported to S60v5.
And yes, it’s time for an updated Messaging app…threaded SMS would also be nice.

Do we have any “path” to bring these popular applications in Beta lab to the products going to the market?
