Tell us what to do with the Nokia N900
By Mike on 07 October 2009
GLOBAL – The excitement barometer monitoring the upcoming launch of the Nokia N900 is now swelling to bursting point. So as the needle bends and glass begins to bulge, we want to find out what it is that you want us to explore related to Nokia’s debut Maemo phone – we’re expecting to receive our very own N900 shortly, and want you to influence how we bring it to life here on Conversations.
Many of you have been peppering Conversations with great comments on the N900 – many in response to our recent piece highlighting the latest N900 video – but we’re keen to get your ideas on what we should do with the handset when we receive it. So please read on and share your thoughts on what you want to see us do with the N900 over the coming weeks.
To get the ball rolling, we’re planning to do a report on our first days living with the device, and have recently created a new Almanac entry exploring the N900. But we want to know what you’d like us to do with the N900 – would you like us to try any particular apps on it and report back, do you want a full hands-on photo gallery looking up-close at the device, are there any particular videos you’d like shot? You tell us. We’ll select the best ideas and do our very best to bring you the stuff you want to see.
Please share your suggestions in the comments section below.

Will it be possible to play N-Gage games on the N900? If yes, I’d like to see how they run, if they are full screen and how they respond to the touchscreen. Thanks!

The only information that never leak is the real-life-usage battery life. So if you can demonstrate that on a video, that would be very cool! Thanks.

We have seen a lot about the desktop, widgets and browsing. For me, two thing are very important and party of everyday life:
- Gaming: Show us how powerful the N900 is, show us GBA an SNES Emulation as well as playing Quake III Arena with TV out
- Pictures / Videos: Do like we’ve seen in the first video. Go out with friends and take photos and especially videos and find out how long you can take pictures and how easy it is to upload a video to youtube when being drunk

There are actually tons of stuff that comes to my mind but I’ll try to be selective. As you may recall, the criticisms on N97 mainly focused on the responsiveness of the phone both in terms of speed and in the ease of use of the touchscreen.
1. I’d like to see how easy/difficult to use the phone with a single hand (both typing using the keyboard and using the screen with fingers). By the way, I’m a lefty so I would prefer to see the same experiment done for both hands.
2. I’d like to see how well you can play games on the phone. For that, it’s best if you select a high resource requiring 3d game with complex controls so that we can see how well the performance of the phone is and how we can use the keyboard/touchscreen for controlling the games.
3. I’d like to see how fast the menu loads after rebooting the phone and trying to open the menu for the first time.
4. And of course, a video of multitasking. Open a flash based website in the background, an office document and the music player. This would be a typical use example so we can see how well multitasking and application switching is working. An extreme example can also be shown by opening more demanding applications at the same time.

Show how it can be used for productivity – email, note taking, etc. Is there a built-in email client or is the web browser SO good that we could just use the web (e.g. gmail.com)?
What kinds of applications are available? Since it is just linux will many linux programs work on it?
I’m with EverythingBlaxx, AT&T 3G snubbed from another awesome device… so it goes.

I would like to know the status of the MMS. If so, would it be via 3G like the crappy G1 or via wi-fi or over the air.
Then, as previously stated would the battery have enough capacity to last the phone for a full day on 3G.
not sure if the device has screen security, if not I would like to have it included for security.
Also I would like the option to block incoming calls from my contact numbers when needed.

I know you need to push the Ovi services, but it would help to at least sync with Google Cal – are there going to be options for this outside of the Mail for Exchange hack? How about showing N900 management with a Mac (got tired of pounding my head on the desk with my n97 before the updates came out).

I’d like to see this renamed the Nokia BFD900. I think it makes more sense.
On a serious note I currently use the Nokia N95 8GB and the problem I currently experience is when I’m web browsing and I get a phone call I still have a problem figuring out how to switch to active standby so that I can switch on the speakerphone function. This is slightly annoying as I sometimes accidentally hit the hang up switch because normally that minimizes the browser and i end up hanging up on someone. Show us a video of how to browse the web while on the phone. Also if you can have a call come in while another function like the web is open. Show me what happens when the call comes in. Does the browser stay on top when answering the phone or does it minimize? How do I quickly activate the speakerphone if the browser is on top? Show this.

As weird as it may sound… can you please test if the vertical thing to make calls works as it’s intended? I have an N82 and the accelerometer doesn’t work to good so it can drive you crazy trying to get the phone to understand that you have it on it’s vertical axis.
Do you have any information regarding the navigation license price on the N900?
Also, please, please, please… battery life!!!
Thanks in advance

The device looks absolutely amazing – and can’t wait to get my hands on it.
However, will be DEVASTATED and SHOCKED if turn-by-turn navigation/voice guidance is not available via Ovi maps as it currently is on symbian devices.
Why would this feature – with paid license subscription possibility – not be available? Voice guidance/turn-by-turn directions are an absolute must.

- bluetooth internet tethering
- Sportstracker compatibility
- Ability to tag photos with contacts in your contact list (looking through your contact list you could find all pics of that contact)
- portrait sms!

I’d like to see some syncing with desktop calendars (ics files) if that’s possible. I currently have to rely on OpenSync with my Symbian based device.
Maybe just a video watching somebody’s typical workflow: listening to music, browsing web pages, doing some updates, opening some documents (pdf, doc) – receiving a phone call or a message whilst doing these things.
People just need to see how useful the device is. Battery life is, another factor I and a lot of people are worried about.

Hi everyone, I do belive that N900 will rock for diferent reasons:
1st: OS Maemo multitasking OS.
2nd: Hw, touchscreen, memory, processor, HSPA+.
3th: Nokia Intuitive configuration and customization of the product.
But…
I’ll like to belive that the touchscreen will be more “sensitive” than N97, Battery(1320mAh) more MhA (please).
If the “FM transmitter” it’s an option that can be used as speaker (we’ll never need any BT in our cars, just need free FM frequency for answering while driving)will be great!!
5MP camera.. why? (in theory) Nxx means N (multimedia handset) and Nxxx (internet tablet) but we are allways talking about Advance multimedia mini computers (and you are the best company in the globe) just putting 8MP you will have more distance with you competitors…
Usb plug.. When we’ll have the oportunity of CHARGING our handsets via USB like the other companies??
Remember that (as I’ve learned at University) it’s very good (Marketing point of view) to be, Original (desing), Innovative, one step forward (techical point of view). Having the same “original” view of the menu (for years), that lets you evolve having the same customers without any problem for older persons
ecc.. But today “VERSATILITY” is the Key…
It’s a goal the cable “CA-75U” but, what if you let “these” mini computer be also a DIVX Player like VIDEO PLAYER MODE, in that case people that 2day is spending €200 for a DIVX player or something like that can think about buying these small mini computer with GPS and fotocamera and internet all inclusive product instead..?
A small develope can be done for having the oportunity on fotocamera mode the chance of taking “Panoramic photos” like taking the 1st snapshot and then having half pic in orther to adjust the 2nd snapshot ?
Let’s think that N900 (in europe) will cost €500 more or less, how much will cost to you or why not also selling some Internet space for making backups of the contacts (like internet sync) and other things that the end user wants..
” do it… Added value like this make difference..
Don’t wait until “drop box”,”sugar sync” or “Ramiro soft
Hopping to be helpfull,
Best regards
Ramiro.-

I also would like to know how the battery holds up with moderate web browsing on 3g and wifi, email checking, music listening and texting.
A comparison against the nokia n97 in terms of web browsing speed over 3G and wifi would be helpful.

I want this phone badly but I don’t want to have to carry a phone and separate mp3 player. Can this replace my ipod touch. In other words is the music player very basic or does it have a significant number of options as you would expect from a dedicated mp3 player? Also how loud is the music player? I tried out the N97 and found the music volume far far too low for me.
I have seen a million videos about the multi-tasking, dashboard and web-browser but nothing focusing on the music player. If you could devote some attention to that that would be great. I am sure tons of people intend to use the phone as their mp3 player.

1.) multimedia remote control it has infrared let’s use it as our remote control for tv and via wifi for media center pc or frontrow for mac
2.) wireless headset use to stream music off our computer or in my situation watching movies online from my computer extremely loud at night.
3.) orb use a definite must have.
There are countless other things but the one that crosses my mind is to be able to use the device as a voip phone with NO simcard installed for travel purposes

Dad = work
Mom = chat, love and so on
Daughter = battery life
Son = gaming
and for the future of Maemo and Nokia devices it would be great if you keep your system as open to developers and third party inventions as possible.. no stupid restriction
IF YOU WANT TO BEAT STUPID APPLE IPHONE -> KEEP IT EASY to comminicate and exchange and share with other devices and programs.
I want my n900 to work with mozilla thunderbird, adobe air, flash 10, msn messenger and so on.
Okay.. and it would be great if you start a huge campaign with 50 n900 to win for the release.

Hi there ,,
I think that The NOKIA N900 is perfect mobile smart computer phone
the only disadvantage in N900 that the display is resistive not capacitive & don’t support the multi-touch .
I hope to see more advertisement about N900 & Maemo 5 because a lot of regular people don’t know about this powerful device & power users think that IPhone Or Omnia HD is better than N900 because they they think that Maemo 5 will not be supplied enough from NOKIA or Maemo’s Programmers or even from Linux & the open source lovers
We should prove to them that this is wrong and the maemo 5 will beats Apple & Android OS

Hi.
I *need* to know how many applications can work in vertical mode (and how usable they are), and an honest opinion about how the screen works without using your fingernail. I have an N81 which is about 2 years old, and I want to replace it, but…
I want an N900 (I’m a Linux user and I would love to use it, promote it, and even develop for it). But if I can’t take notes and write SMSs carrying a folder in my left hand, and the phone in the right one, I would consider an Omnia HD (which has Symbian and a capacitive touchscreen), or just save my money until the next Maemo device appears with better vertical applications.
Some people will say that I’m crazy, but I type SMSs, take notes, or add appointments with the 12-key keyboard of my N81 while I’m driving, either in the city or in the highway (I have an automatic car, of course). If I can’t do the same with the N900
Thanks.

I would like to see an onscreen keyboard in qwerty mode is landscape and t9 in portrait. Many people like to just type in things really fast without having to slide out a keyboard.
-Good speakerphone quality, many states in the US aren’t allowing people to talk while driving so speakerphone quality is starting to become important.
-Multitouch availabilible would be great too, but it’s not a big issue.

Ovi services integration is an absolute must, especially if Nokia has any plans to grow the service(s) and improve its takeup.
Re: Ovi maps/N900 in particular, voice guidance/turn-by-turn navigation (whether free or via paid license) should absolutely be included and supported. Could not imagine why Nokia would leave this out and will be very disappointed if this is the case.

I propose you do something that’s not very sexy and was forgotten on the Maemo 4 devices that never worked correctly…
Show off how I can check several google calendars, get an actual scheduled functional alert before a meeting, and a to-do list integrated with the calendar. Then show off how easy it is to manage my contact list with my google contacts.
Really basic stuff, but very important and previously completely ignored.

It has to work well with office applications. If dad doesn’t like it, the gaming stuff won’t matter because it won’t be bought for the kids anyway, and it is dad’s wallet that matters. Adobe, Word files with editing, calendaring are essential. After that, if it can play games also, well, the kids might get one.

Considering that text messaging while driving is being increasingly banned throughout the world, I’d like to be able to put the N900 in “driving mode” where: 1) SMS/MMS messages are automatically read out-loud upon receipt; and 2) one can issue voice commands to dictate and send out SMS messages, and do things like send one’s current GPS location via SMS or MMS to someone. Also need Mac/iSync, Google and Lotus Notes syncing. Always-on GPS would be great so apps like Camera can instantly start geo-tagging photos with no delay, and some other app could display the N900 user’s current location on a Ovi or Google map. It would be great if I could have a web site widget that indicates my current location on a blog or a social networking site like Facebook.

I would very much be interested in a live videostream from the device it’s front camera. Although there are a plethora of possibilities this device will be capable off it would also be nice to see the responses of the people working it!
As much inspiration as the device itself will sprout, it’s users their excitement or frustration would be a splendid thing to see as well.

This is what I think; While we can’t know how good (or bad) the N900 will be till it comes out and someone has used/played with it/explored the apps etc- since this is the 1st phn to be built on Maemo, there is definitely going to be a lot of new things that weren’t in the prev high end Nokia devices.
I’m looking at this as the phone that would ‘reposition’ the big N as the front runner in high end mobile devices.
I’m ready to change my iphone as soon as it hits the stalls.
Here’re the full device details for anyone who needs catching up-

I would like you to look at PIM functionality – the diary/task system and the contacts functionality. Including synchronisation with Outlook, Ovi and other calendars such as Google Agenda and in particular: Can the multiple calendars be looked at and manipulated on a ‘master calendar’ as with Google Agenda – ie the ability to view and edit all your appointments in one place, but with different colours for different types of appointments (category-like functionality)? Is there a Task or To Do list feature and does it support categories or multiple types of tasks – perhaps related to the multiple calendars? Can you set up reminders for calendar entries and tasks, and when a reminder goes off can you flexibly postpone it by increments of time and reschedule it if appropriate? Can you synchronise the calendar and tasks and contacts directly with Outlook? Can you configure Contacts with a template which provides the fields you need for each new contact rather than fields you never use?

I have two requests/questions:
1. Is it possible to sync my current Ovi contacts, tasks, notes, calendar with the N900? (I’m using the N95 8GB at the moment.)
2. Quality of phone calls (clarity, tone, voice integrity, etc…)

Encryption, Security, Biometrics, and Secure Banking, Bill Pay, Ebay, Paypal, etc.
Forex Trading, Bank wires, Gold purchasing…
Think the movie “The Saint” which starred the early Nokia 9000
model that I could never get in the USA. Make sure the N900 will
be available via T-Mobile soon! Thanks. Widget to run Windows XP programs as single instances under the Maemo5 operating system. This would be for proprietary programs like Real Estate programs and others that are small, but useful.
Thanks.

The N900 is nearly perfect. I think a Scratch Resistant Surface should be on the unit. And Face Detection will do better. The stereo speakers are on the list which is pretty good. Nokia is leading with Dual Speakers in most of the mobile. Now. can you make 3 Speakers in a handset ? That would be cool. You should think about it. Also, if you can decrease the thickness of N900, that will be cool.

Hi, not so much a “can you show us X” as a burning question in my mind: to what extent is the phone/cell functionality exposed to user editable code in n900/maemo 5?
Can a user script up custom responses to calls or sms in a way that could take account of the caller-id, etc.?

In addition to my Pico/bluetooth keyboard suggestion above, would it be possible for the N900 to include an App that would allow the camera to be used as a sort of document scanner taking ‘photos’ of documents which could then be saved into the N900 as PDF files and potentially even as Word files that can be edited, if teh software can recognise the image as being composed of text and translate the image into actual text. That would be a huge selling point.
And, further, if the N900 could be plugged directly into a small printer (e.g. through bluetooth or USB) allowing documents to be printed out without having to go through a separate computer. E.g. if the N900 is used to check in for a flight online the boarding card could then be printed from the N900 to a small portable printer, all accomplished while in a taxi on the way to the airport.

I’m a T-Mobile USA subscriber who’s literally salivating at the chance to have an N900. I have an ancestral Treo 680 — which I love, and which has a resistive touch screen — that can’t keep up with modern needs. My T-Mobile unlimited plan is $5 less per month than Sprint, $25 less than Verizon and $55 less than AT&T, so I’m anxious to get a 3g phone that keep up with my power-user needs and work with my thrifty but effective plan.
I write blogs and fiction on my phone, so the ability to edit and work with Office docs is big on my list. Likewise, I do a lot of web research while writing, so showcasing how easily I can switch from web to word processing and back would be good.
Likewise, I don’t watch anything unless it’s on Hulu or TV.com, so showing the phone viewing episodes on those sites in 3G speed would be a “game changer,” as a poster said before.
I’ve seen the image editing stuff in some screen shots with some of the more comprehensive reviews (like this: http://bit.ly/aUXnq), which seem fine for blog purposes at least, but no word on whether I can clip out accidental intros and what not on video recordings.
I work on a MacBook Pro, so some info on how to port my Palm data into this seamlessly — maybe a Missing Sync demo — would help me as well. Also, seeing it used as a hard drive would be good in that capacity.
Finally, as I believe this machinne is really an iPhone killer, if you could *please* just help T-Mobile offer some kind of customization and subsidy and get the end user price point down below $400, I can guarantee two sales — one for me and one for my wife, also on an aging Treo 680 — by year’s end. She’s not having dreams about this phone like I am (and it looks like it can replace my iPod and be my “all-in-one” device with its removable media), but this could become a Nokia family very shortly.
Thank you for at least creating a device that answered all my needs, and I hope to get it into a price point range where it won’t be next spring before I can afford two of them.

Wanted to group my suggestions:
1) Create the possibility to connect a Pico projector to the N900 so that, while using a bluetooth fullsize foldable keyboard, the N900 can be used like a laptop, with the screen projected onto a wall or a white page propped up on your lap.
2)Create an App that would allow the N900 camera to be used as a document scanner taking ‘photos’ of documents which could then be saved into the N900 as PDF files and as Word files that can be edited, if the software can recognize the image as being composed of text and translate the image into actual text.
3) Develop a small portable printer (but one that uses regular paper) and establish a bluetooth or USB connection between the N900 and the printer allowing documents to be printed out without having to go through a separate computer. E.g. if the N900 is used to check in for a flight online the boarding card could then be printed from the N900 to the printer, all accomplished while in a taxi on the way to the airport.
4) Create a standard USB port on the N900 so that documents can be easily transferred to a memory stick.
5) A whacky option – add a rape/burglar alarm capacity (can the current speaker system be made loud enough if it is used just for a single note shrill sound?).

I want you to make it not just easy to use but really, really easy to use & then I want you to make it affordable.
I want you to democratise a great user experience rather than create an elitest experience as per the iPhone.
As specific applications, without knowing maemo, I would suggest the following (in no particular order):
1. software take screenshots of the desktop
2. software mount / dismount to nfs of smb shares (across wifi)
3. ssh client / server
4. remote desktops: vnc + RDCP Terminal Server client
5. ability to run mame
6. classic games, like Solataire / Tetris installed by default
7. an easy way to add and remove software
Hope this helps

the n900 looks like a hot deal…
the game market for this looks on the whole.. weak!! i have found no information on game developers taking the long jump.. but this may be an oversight by my shabby google research but some tech reports have reached the same conclusions.. i just hope that is just an issue that for the meantime is just under wraps!!
if games are to be taken whole heartedly with n900 release, im sure that im not alone in this thought also.. but i feel that the hardware in its self would be again wasted.. like it was in the previous n95 style.. 3d accelerated chip predecessors if a holistic approach to higher end game development and gaming tools like the few bluetooth game pads etc are not better looked at!!
iphone took the leap… why wont nokia or others?? iphone have patented (no matter how weak or strong the patent) multi touch screens.. and it does seem to be holding off mobile developers from utilizing multitouch.. so the only other real alternative would have to be… game pads!!
with tv out… and game pad/s the hardware could and would truly be taken advantage of.. and this would potentially rock the market…
using your mobile phone as a multiplay console!! or as a single one..
http://www.tangshop.com/bluetooth-game-pad-bgp-100.html
http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&um=1&sa=1&q=mobile+game+controller&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&start=0
this sort of thing would work.. but it needs something more like a ps-1 controller! more potential to gain a market instead of limit it and stifle it! make it less of a hinderance!!
n-gage2 nearly got it right!! but.. nearly!! not quite!! 2-3 years… and only a handfull of games?? this is not a way forward.. its not even close… its just a bottle-neck of potential.. but there is in reality… no balls on this dude!!
i remember seeing
http://www.midlet-review.com/index?content=review&id=435
ghost recon!!
this looked awesome!!
and that was Reviewed on 17/03/05 with Nokia N-Gage!!
2005???!!!!!!
ive seen nothing like this on mobile phones!!
was this just P1SSING in the wind??
so my point stands strong (i feel)
over 5 years of potential. will this happen again?? the market is waiting for someone to open the game world away from iphone..and apple!! after all they own somewhere around 20% of the this market!! and they have 1 product!! which they just keep bettering!!
s60 was ok… v5 touch was from what i can see a little lousy and dated even on release!! phones through nokia didnt take advantage of the hardware… n96 was a drop from n95 etc… little or no initiative was taken on this development!! on my n96 i was tearing my hair out trying to play the glitchy version of brothers in arms? n96 was one the first phone to utilize n-gage out the box!! brothers in arms 3d didnt even work properly.. it was slower than slow. glitchy sound didnt work etc!! that sucked something chronic!!
and… why wait for crackpot game porters to do the work.. quake 2 and 3?? on a mobile?? doom etc!! this is gravy baby!! so get on the gravy train.. and suck the market dry!! nokia own around half the industry!! people like nokia!!! people trust nokia!!! why hold back from this!!!
so to conclude!!!
1. develop a gameplay system that will work.. multi key bluetooth.. usb mini hub etc.. something to make this a leap forward!!
2. get the market game developers onboard! if you dont.. this maemo 5 and linux os is just another waste!!
3. work this product onto an already established market!! iphone did this… it looks like sony with a psp phone are more than likely to do it!!
ITS THERE FOR THE TAKING!!!

Decent signal strength a must. My N95 8GB is great. My SE C905 terrible in the same locations.
I had a Nokia N96 and as long as its better better than that I’ll be happy! My N95 8GB was the last decent phone Nokia made! Oh and the battery lasts a day even with heavy usage – very important.
And a release date – there are a lot of other smartphones coming on the market during November that utilise windows mobile 6.5 so Nokia had better be ahead of the game with a fail safe operating system.

The thing I most want:
Marketing. You really have to market this thing. Market = sales = larger developer base. MARKETING. Id sacrifice everything (MMS, no portrait, etc) just to market this device and get it out there to the public. Signs on bus stops, TV, the internet, etc.

Hmmm.. I think i would brief those things the N900 lacks in the following: (sorry if i repeat previous suggestions)
- Enhanced camera software (with more advanced settings & customizable capturing options)
- FM Radio is a must (originally installed & it’d be cool if it works with no headset required!!)
- I know we don’t need MMS with an internet tablet as we’ve got all other alternatives.. but please think about it!
- Battery!! Battery!! Battery!! (at least 1500 mAh please)
- DIVX support is also a must
- Office editor & not only viewer
- Remote desktop connection (from & to the N900)
- Most of the N900 fans would really appreciate including an elite carrying case, or any such protection stuff, in the selling package.
Thanks for this great piece of tech. art.

People who are worried about MMS or Portrait… well, portrait will be available in a later update, most likely at the end of the year or at the start of 2010. Nokia promised us this. And it’ll most likely be able to do all the basic stuff on portait, if not more. And MMS will also come with later firmware. Don’t worry, Maemo 5 is open source, everything will be possible. I think Maemo 6 will be available on the Nokia N900. Seeing as it has a strong and potential hardware and being open source…yeah…

Hi!
First of all, I thank you for being an open-minded company that tries to communicate with your customers and tries to adopt to open standards and software rather than patents and copyrighted stuff. I really appreciate that.
I would like to see some close-up photos of input/output’s of the N900. For example the 3,5mm audio-out jack and usb-mini port.
I would also like to know real-live battery usage with extensive usage of the device. My idea is that if I buy the N900 I will use it very much, not only as an ideling cellphone to receive calls. Therefor I would like to know if I have to charge the device every 2-3 hour of if I can use it for 2-3 days. In my opinion the device should last for a minimum of 19-20 hours (8 hours when I am at work, 8 hours when I am home and some extra hours when I travel between work and home, and at last charge the device back to 100% battery while I’m sleeping) with extensive usage during all those hours. Preferably the device should last for >24hours with extensive usage all the time when it is new, so it can last for at least 19-20 hours after 2 years of usage (everyone knows that the battery will degrade by time, and I would like my device to be fully functional after 2-3 years and not have to charge it every second hour or so).
At last I would like a demonstrating video of how to reflash/upgrade Maemo.
Keep up the good work!

I am an ardant fan of nokia, and I am really excited about the Nokia n900. But I have little concern about the UI of this one, as n900 is taking a step forward to behave as a Phone too, its no more going to be a geekish gadget. To reach to a common man, it has to be much more user friendly. Pardon me if it sounds like comparing with those other phones…but no other option as n900 is A PHONE now.
I am sure with the robustness of the hardware we have and flexibilty of the maemo/open GL Nokia n900 will reach places, Provided there is encouragement for the application developers to develop more user friendly, common man usabe applications.
To summarize, we need a better GUI and flexibilty to develop more applications for the common man and not geeks, as this is going to be a phone and not a tablet only

The basics that N900 needs:
1. Portrait Mode
2. MMS
3. Voice Dialing (most Nokia phones have this, already. Why not the n900?)
4. Please put the Memory card slot in the outside, please! We have to wrestle out the back cover first just to access the card!
Game Changers:
1. DivX Support
2. Use the front facing camera for VOIP calls like Skype/Yahoo
3. Charge cheaper annual rate ($90+ year, pleaze!) for turn by turn navigation for the OVI maps so that we can give up our navigation gadgets. Better yet, make it free!
4. Easily removeable battery from the outside like a laptop.
5. USB support for portable hard drives and keyboards. A nokia USB hub that would support a mouse and keyboard will be a seller!!! Most of us won’t need to bring our laptops to work or even abroad!
6. Working FM radio without plugging in anything to the headphone jack.
Possible Accessories:
1. N900 proprietary SD/Compact flash reader for the photograpers
2. Nokia designed portable external flash memory drive.
3. While I’m dreaming, might as well put in support for an external Nokia DVD/CD-ROM drive.

Nokia charges $90+ per year for turn by turn navigation. That’s only for the service. A brand new TomTom or Garmin is almost the same price!
When I said portable external drive, I meant a solid state drive, to keep the rest of our divx files. 20-hour flights, here I come!

I used Nokia for years but left after my N96 crashed and O2 offered me an Iphone 3GS with free WLAN connections via BT. Turns out that Iphone is a pretty far behind in techy terms, it can’t multi task, it can’t save to disk, the web browser will not access anything with a flash player, it only plays stuff from Itunes etc etc However the one thing it does do better than the Nokias is the user interface. It is simple, easy to pick up a joy to use. The menu system on the Nokia’s was a bit like windows with things buried in illogical places.

Make the technology the servant of the user.

Handy is the device which is more or less always going to stay with the users, where ever they go.
Following are the possible features which could add more values:
More compact sesnsors like Barometer, Room Temperature Monitor, Digital Compass, Bar Code Reader etc.
Possible entertaiment Device:
1) We are very thankful for multiple format support. Kindly provide plugins for wide multilmedia formats.
2) Please provide a rich featured internet radio, with Equaliser and Custom stations memory.
3) Winamp provides auto load preset, which is a fantastic feature for audio. Kindly provide the same in future releases.
4) In Europe, iphone provides GPS and Local timtable integrated applications.
This application locates the user and reccomends next bus nearby with the timings.
(Ex) Wemlin
This is a real good application. We wish to have one in N900.
5) If possible, provide an easier way of activating thr FM radio chip without eating power. FM is heavily used in many countries.
Many thanks for listening to our feedback!
Thanks,
Anandth

I would like to see the Nokia N900 or future touchphone to be able to send document/photos via wifi, bluetooth or USB for print with the device. It will be my best all-in-one device.

Like a few others have mentioned, I’d also like to see FREE skype video calls possible using front facing camera. even if only over Wifi would be great, meaning no cost from service provider/carrier and not creating bandwidth problems for said carrier.

I would settle for it actually being available in the UK?
I am getting a little tired of seeing reports of availability and “It’s shipped” when they don’t appear to be anywhere. Where are the being shipped too? Vapourware Town and Marketing Dreamland?
So far a quick perusal of the internet reveals:
Carphonewarehouse – Not even mentioned.
Phones4U – Not even mentioned.
Orange.co.uk – Not even mentioned.
Vodafone.co.uk – Not even mentioned.
And by not even mentioned I can’t even see it in the “Future Phones” secion of the Vodafone site (lots of pictures of the Iphone though).
I even looked at being able to get one without a tariff:
Amazon.co.uk – unlinked (even from search, an old link allows me to be notified when available).
Play.com are saying due for release on 30th Nov 2009.
This last one has the whiff of truth about it but if it won’t be in my sweaty mitts until December that hardly counts as a November release. Availability means I can go into my local Orange store and buy one not have the guy say “Huh?”.
If it’s not ready simply say that, this is slowly becoming another Palm Pre – whip everybody up into a frenzy then by the time it actually appears it’s old news (and possibly out of date).
