What extra functionality would you most like to see in the Nokia N900?
By Mike on 08 October 2009
GLOBAL – Yesterday we posted a story calling for your suggestions on what we should do with the N900 when we finally get hold of ours. The response has been overwhelming – in less than 24 hours over 80 of you have shared your ideas, leaving heaps of smart suggestions (read them all here), and they’re still flooding in. Thank you, it’s an awesome response, and please keep those ideas coming. Alongside many great suggestions of what you’d like us to do with the Nokia N900, a bunch of you offered up some pre-launch feedback on functionality that you’d like to see in the N900. We thought this would make for a great reader poll, particularly as the N900 is built on the open source Linux-based Maemo platform, meaning that the development community is often eager to latch onto the best suggestions in order to bring them to life quickly, and into our open palms.
So, here’s a list of extra functionality that a number of you have said you would like to see for the Nokia N900, but which is the most important? Leave your vote, or if you have a suggestion that isn’t listed, select ‘other’ option and scribble down your what you’d like to see. And as always please share your comments below.

Surprisingly, the ability to use remote control got high vote. I thought there is 3rd party software to do that? The prototype unit seemed come with IrDA

The Unit does not support IrDA, but CIR (Consumer InfraRed). So yes, it will be possible. And IRReco is the app for that.

Does CIR include an IR receiver, or is there only a transmitter?

Only a transmitter.

I think Nokia should do more to explore the use of the N900 as a replacement for netbooks. E.g. would it be possible to connect a “Pico projector” (very small projectors about the size of a pack of cigarettes and which project a pretty large image) to the N900 (to project an expanded view of the N900 screen onto a white wall or a white page propped up on your lap) as well as a foldable bluetooth full size keyboard, so that typing and viewing with the N900 can be similar to using a laptop? With these sorts of functions in mind, the N900 would ideally have increased battery power and perhaps eventually a slightly faster processor. Nokia could then advertise the device as replacing the netbook niche. This selling point would make the price much more acceptable.

All this can be done. I tested these scenarios for my wife’s usage patterns. Slideshow To Go can show Powerpoint docs; BT keyboard is no problem (I have an Apple BT keyboard). And there is TV-Out in full PAL glory.

I would REALLY like to see a function added that was stripped from the old tablets- the ability to use the N900 as a companion device tethered via bluetooth to a host phone’s 3G connection. It used to happen without interaction on either device aside from accessing an application on the tablet that required a data connection; the tablet would initiate a data connection with the host phone which would complete the connection without further interaction. As it stands, this will only be possible with Joikuspot or WalkingHotSpot now- neither are a brilliant option for battery life and requires much more interaction with both devices. :-/
It’s nice to see Nokia bring the tablet closer to the mainstream marketplace, and it’s beyond-the-moon fantastic to see Nokia develop devices- serious devices- for Tmobile’s special little frequency… but it sucks hard to be left out in the cold as an AT&T contract holder and a veteran tablet user that loved the concept of the companion multimedia device. I get that such a niche device (as the older tablets were) isn’t going to fly far in this economic environment of today- but why would Nokia forget about this extremely loyal (though extremely small- maybe that’s it?) consumer base? Why is this functionality gone completely from the N900? Doesn’t seem fit.
Hopefully this is something that can be corrected by the community on their own if Nokia chooses to ignore this functionality.

Hey there Mister J. Now you know how I’ve been feeling when you were playing with your N95 on at&t’s 3G. Hate to say it but it’s time to suffer a little LOL
(Just being sarcastic). I honestly wish Nokia (and any manufacturer for that reason) come out with a phone that would support both US frequencies as well as the Euro one. Maybe then T-Mobile and at&t could sign some damn deal to roam on each other’s networks for 3G just like during the good ‘ole 850/1900 Mhz times. Apart from that I’d love to see….
VIDEO CALLING via Skype. I know it’s up to Skype to develop the feature within their app but Nokia could give them a little push. We now have 3G almost everywhere. Video calling was supposed to be the “It” feature of UMTS but now you have phones with the video call cameras yanked out because it never took off. Well people get the “pipe” to their phone – why not give them an app that allows to make video calls and doesn’t require any special infrastructure on the carrier’s side like a standard video calling does.

The N900 is a capable device that with the right developers can do most anything. However, it needs to be able to handle the basics first! Quite a few items in your vote choices are really frivolous nice to have stuff, but I’d hardly consider a “flashlight” app or a “portrait/landscape orientation” switch more important than the battery life and ability to interact with where our data is now, specifically calendars, contacts, and tasks. I’d especially like to ensure I get my appointment/task reminders even if I’m offline without a data connection, but still have it online for my wife to see (gcal). You’ve got to walk before you run…

After unboxing my prototype (AMsterdam Summit), it took me about 5 minutes to get all my Google Contacts and the Calendar synced to my device
And yes, also IMAP access to my Gmail account.
Only ting missing for sync is tasks (missing Google API)

I use MMS a lot. So, no MMS is in fact a deal-breaker. Few of my friends have e-mail on their phones, therefor to communicate in real-time with photo’s, MMS is a necessity. I also use MMS instead of sending postcards when on holiday. Due to roaming costs this is cheaper that sending e-mail. So: please bring MMS to the N900.

It should definately have more VOIP solutions (ventrilo anyone? :O).. full capability of Windows Live Messenger (it’s up to Microsoft though I guess).. Release the Flash 10.1 faster than scheduled… Fix the lag/stuttering that’s on EVERY video I’ve seen (I mean all I am asking here is smooth transitions; if Nokia wants to add “cool” transitions they should at least do it correctly and make it appealing to the masses with no problems what-so-ever). Have more stuff run on portrait mode.. Ability to upgrade to Maemo 6 when it comes out (yes I am thinking about the future too)… MMS!! Although this is an “old” technology and is barely used (at least by me).. but it’s nice to know that it’s there and I can send an MMS when I am truely in need to do that.
Ability to connect USB keyboard.. etc. (USB host).. Add DRM support (THIS ONE IS A BIGGIE!!), because I would like to play a lot more cooler games that’s on the N-Gage.. So that also brings me to say that we need really COOL games on the N900; hint hint: GTA (like on the iPhone), and that crumbled paper throw game (which is also available on the iPhone).. Lol I got addicted to those two games on my friend’s iPhone (which I truely hate except when I play those games).. Also GTA would be awesome with the N900’s keyboard..

This I fully agree with. I would love the ability to use most things, especially texting, while in portrait mode. I think the phone would do well to have a portrait oriented keyboard or even a num pad with predictive text would be awesome.

It would be nice to have more smart dates in contacts. That wat you can store (for example wedding) anniversaries with the person they belong to. You should be able to store Birthdays of children with their parent so that you don’t have to make separate entries for them.

Portrait mde and MMS are two features that cannot be left out. N900 is supposed to be a phone, not just an internet tablet.
Symbian emulation is a nice idea to ensure a smooth transition from Symbian to Maemo. That would be encouraging for the users to try our N900 without worrying about losing their favorite apps.
And of course, gaming. Such a powerful device should have gaming capabilities. (I want to see scummVM and DOSBox.)

What I would like:
- A Compass, as it is a prerequisite to Augmented Reality Apps. And these are going to be big in the next months. Of course this is not possible for the N900, if the hardware is missing. Still, I want to express the need.
Nevertheless all the rest is good ideas.

Don’t make an iPhone – include MMS from day one.

USB Host Mode. I had assumed it would be included because it was in some earlier internet tablets. Really, it shouldn’t be going down in features. I can see why MMS isn’t supported, and it’s not a huge deal, and wasn’t in the N810 either, but still.
Also, something that would be nice is a way to have the browser view WAP pages. It’s nice being able to view full desktop websites, but sometimes they’re loaded with ads and the WAP version is cleaner. The ability to force it to display the WAP version, even if the server does something fancy to detect the browser would be nice.

I wish software would be released so the N900 and other Nokia phones could sync with Linux desktops, especially since the N900 runs Linux Nokia should put the effort for that model and others that are the same. As for something that I would like to see on a device like the N900 that is missing it would be to also include a Compact Flash slot in addition to the microSD slot already included. That would allow much larger storage at less cost and with better performance.

I would like to connect to the N900 via bluetooth using my S40/S60 device.
So I hope Nokia implements some protocols to accomplish this.
The purpose? To keep the N900 safe in my backpack most of the time and use my “walkaround” Nokia 2630/5530 to monitor/receive/place calls from either phone. Just like a bluetooth headset with display plus a limited set of remote controls (monitor battery life, Wi-Fi availability, etc). I can also choose which SIM card in either phone to use (simulated dual-SIM?) or use Skype on my S40/S60 “handset”.
Better yet, make this a protocol for any Nokia Phone to work as a remote communications extension for the Booklet/PC and future larger Nokia tablets.
This protocol can also define a subset for a Bluetooth watch, which are on the verge of extinction due to the cost and complexity of trying to cram too many features. A simple bluetooth watch can simply blink a white light-band to let me know when I have a call/sms/email, or a green light-band to remind me of something happening on my calendar, or a red light band to warn me that my phone is out of range or (being) stolen, misplaced, etc. Then it will still be simple enough for Swatch and others to incorporate into stylish designs that consumers are happy to wear.

All of these ideas sound great… but how about some business capabilities!!! I have been looking for one phone that can do it all, and that means great email and contact app, calendar syncing from outlook, google, etc, great TASK application – all of these phones have moved away from one of the main aspects that started the whole smartphone craze – email, contacts, calendars and TASKS!
I dont get how all these phone companies skimp on the basics that are at the heart of why people use smartphones over regular cell phones. Make sure your basic PIM functions are well integrated, sync well with outlook, exchange, google, etc.

I would say that MMS (should be simple to implement) or lack thereof is the reason I would or would not buy this “phone” since I use that daily with family and friends… everything else looks really good and portrait mode is overrated
Hell not being able to send MMS was one of the things “we” really laughed at iPhone people over and the fact that its not implemented in N900 is EPIC fail…

For me very important: Passthrough functionality known from older communicator series that allows me to share my Windows or Linux PC’s internet connection using USB or BT. That should not need new code, only integration of reused code into the GUI.

Would it be possible to establish a serial (RS232) connection from a terminal session by using a BT/serial or similar adapter ?
It would be useful to control routers/switches this way and to readout measuring devices with serial interface.

more integrated communication app. its great that, although we dont know how it looks yet, sms & chat are sort of combined. but it’ll be good if email can also be combined into one app. the idea is simple
1. you have one app with 4 different tabs : sms/mms, chat, email, all. the “all” tab is basically all the 3 methods (sms, chat, and email) collapsed together.
of course each tab would show a list of persons you communicate with. when you tap on a person, communication is threaded.
2. even better is, when you open the app to compose, its sort of an “open” compose meaning you dont have to go into the chat tab, or sms, or even email because many including me, if not at all, you would insert a contact after you’re done typing your message, or in fact we may change/havent really decided on how to contact your friend. for example, i want to contact John and he has different contacts saved in the phonebook ie. ym, email, and mobile number for sms. when you’re finished typing the message, “open” compose would allow you to choose which john’s contact you want to include be it ym, email, or sms. then the app processes it away.
3. even much better, with this app through “open” compose, when you want to send to multiple contacts, say to John and David, you can send your message to John with chat coz you know he’s online, and SMS to David because he’s not online.
i know its easier said than done, but n900 looks to be an advanced phone, in fact more advanced than its competitors iphone, palm pre, or even android, and this capability would only affirm n900 as the ultimate smartphone, plus i bet most of the time, we use the phone to do these things. yes, facebooking/twittering, and browsing are part of daily use, but socializing doesnt occupy us as much as sms, chat, emailing.

Am mostly concern about the size of N900 it looks bulky, I feel the designer has to design something smaller in size if possible key boardless, thin and shorter in size but should make sure it has all the technologies N900 has, cause in todays world people do not find it comfortable carrying bulky mobile phones around.

Make it work with Outlook – which it doesn’t! Unless you call working the fact that it changes every address so that I can’t do a mailing from Outllok once it synchronises back. I REALLY don’t want the Postcode to be the second line of the address and the help line have been through this 4 times and told me at the end that the ‘fault’ is resolved. It’s NOT! Also allow other software to use the built in GPS – Nokia maps sends me in circles. This is my first AND last Nokia unless support actually fixes things.

I would like to have e-mail filters available in the e-mail application, in order to be able to automatically sort incoming mails into different folders.
In the audio player, add the ability to skip 15 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min forward or backward. This is very useful when listening to podcasts.
As I understand it, the cloud is becoming the trend, but, please, keep the possibility to synchronize the N900 data with our local PC. This is very important that we can have a choice to synchronize in the cloud or locally.
Otherwise, thank you for having created a device that looks very close to my ideal. I was waiting for it since a long time!

1. Add compatibility for AT&T’s 3G network. Why should you limit a device with such great potential?
2. Add MMS. I use it very seldom but I would still like to have the option.
3. Add portrait mode for all of the applications.
4. Why limit the number of personalized desktop views to four?
5. Make ring tones and alert tones selectable for each contact or group. It isn’t listed in the specifications but I think I did see the contact ring tones in one of the videos.
6. It is not listed in the specification but is probably available but just to make sure, I would like to see the timer still available for the profiles like it is on so many of your other products.
