Getting started with the N900 (video)
By Mike on 16 October 2009
LONDON, England – We’ve been camped out on the doorstep eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Nokia N900, and now it’s here! We’ve been asking you what you’d like us to do with the N900 (and over the coming weeks we’ll continue to sift through many of your great suggestions) with a view to thoroughly exploring Nokia’s fourth Maemo device. So to kick things off, I shot a quick basic video of simply getting started with the N900 – as a Maemo newcomer I didn’t know what to expect or how to interact with it, but the initial set-up process and Get Started video app act as a surprisingly good tutorial. Watch our first living-with encounter featuring the new Nokia N900 here…
Since shooting this video last night I’ve got my email all set up neatly via Nokia Messaging and contacts and calendar synced smartly with Google Sync through Mail for Exchange, and so far it’s all working a treat. The calendar stuff is particularly impressive, but we’ll revisit that later. Plus, I’ve started running along the app download road, including motion sensitive game Bounce Evolution – even though I’ve only got a few minutes play under my belt, the N900 is looking like a serious games device. Exciting. Stay tuned for more on the Nokia N900, and as always please scribble down your comments below.

Is this final (consumer) release version? If so, let us know of any changes to the software if any?

Hi Mark, I haven’t had a problem sending. I first went and set up the Exchange stuff in the Settings on the N900 and then went through the email set-up choosing Nokia Messaging from the list. Might be worth checking you’re sending from the right imap and smtp ports – http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78799 Hope that helps if it isn’t what you’ve already tried.

Such a weird bug.
I am able to send from nokia messaging account only if I delete the exchange (google sync) account. It seems that the email app is trying to send from the exchange account even though i’m trying to send from the nokia messaging account.
I already filled out a bug report about this so I hope someone can help me out. https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5503

Hey Mark, I’ve been experiencing the same thing as you now, and only last night realized what has happened. The clue came when I noticed some contacts I’d added hadn’t synced back – I somehow inadvertently deleted Exhange profile while setting up Nokia Messaging, as it had gone from my account list. Hence I was able to send email from Nokia Messaging no problem. After I noticed I set up Mail for Exchange once again and contacts and calendar synced fine, but since then (yesterday evening) I’ve noticed that, like you, it’s keeping outgoing messages in the outbox and similarly attempting to send from Exchange as well as Nokia Messaging it would seem. It seems to be this unique combination of Nokia Messaging and Google sync. Otherwise, Nokia Messaging on its own works brilliantly. I’m going to see if I can find out more.

What a slap in the face for n97 users. Paid full price for this brick and now just a few months later the phone the n97 was promised to be shows up as the n900 with a lower price point.
Should have done the smart thing and rewarded Apple with my cash instead. Brand loyalty only gets one a slap in the face these days.

something I’m curious about and didn’t see any mentions of on the internet is network time update. As in does the N900 automatically sync the time with the network like S60 phones? (Clock – Settings > Auto time update)
It’s really useful when traveling across timezones, and way convenient for when you don’t want to set the time.

“Nokia’s first Maemo device”? Try their fourth Maemo device…770, N800, N810, and now N900. It’s first Maemo *phone*.

I want the N97 Mini, bring it out! I like the fact that Nokia left it out for N900 because it would mean, there will only a be few Mini owners in the world! the elites…

I personally think Nokia should bring their N97 mini to US carriers(especially AT&T), for free(or <$100) with 2 year contract with an option of using it without data plan if they want to make any serious inroads in US market.
What Samsung and LG are doing in US, is they are introducing phones in the range of 5800/5530 etc with no data plan contract, just voice contract and are selling several devices.

I agree dude c”, Americans are very dependent on operators because they really have no money to shell out like the rest of the world does, they only depend on subsidize devices, haha, kidding!
Anyways, after watching an hour of N900 video on youtube, I realize that it wasn’t my ideal device, the fact that I cannot use it on portrait mode except making calls is a BIG disappointment, its totally impractical to use when your outdoors, where I use my mobilephone most of the time, when your walking on the streets, or when I’m on my Harley’s (joke, dont have one hehe), its not even pocketable!
That is why I’m routing for the N97 Mini that Nokia is trashing out.

I think, they can/will include all portrait mode capability in an software update for Maemo 5 in the future after the phone starts selling.
I agree, Portrait mode functionality from the word “go” would have been better. But you know, Nokia was not expecting N900 to be so popular i guess.
They thought they would make an internet tablet like its predecessors with an added phone functionality, for a niche market. But i think, with the public demand, i am sure they will include portrait mode compatibility in N900.

The Nokia N97 Mini is arguably Nokia’s most powerful handset to date, and it combines a large touch-sensitive display with a QWERTY keyboard, 3.5G high-speed data, a 5 megapixel camera plus GPS and mapping support, but will this be enough to catch up and beat the dominance of the iPhone. Well I been seeing a lot of iPhone killer also known as (MID) Mobile Internet Devices lately, but none has really lived up to it expectations.
