Ovi Store highlights – Social gaming, listening devices & touchy converters
By Mike on 26 October 2009
GLOBAL – Our Forum Nokia friends over at MyDailyApp.com have spent the last seven days seeking out some of the smartest new apps to emerge on the Ovi Store, and this week we’ve homed in on a trio of top highlights. Including an intriguing new social network gaming app curiously dubbed Bobba, a handy automatic CallRecorder app, and a clever unit converter designed for touchscreen Symbian OS devices. Read on to find out more and to watch a great little video of Bobba in action.
Perched top of the tree in terms of fruity fascination is Bobba. Leaning on our appetites for social networking fun it’s a free game that lets you explore a virtual world created by the people playing – you can fashion yourself a space, a custom avatar, and have conversations in real-time with the other gamers populating this mini mobile realm. One of the MyDailyApp.com guys has written up a review, including some of his experiences (read it here). But one of the best ways to understand how it works and what it’s all about is by watching this short video.
Next to ping a bright dot on our app radar is CallRecorder, a new and highly tweakable app that lets you automatically record incoming and outgoing calls. It’s also been designed to make it dead easy to manage your recordings and share them with your home computer should you fancy editing them or keeping them stored elsewhere for safe-keeping. Now, this isn’t a piece of private detective software, as it does let the other person know your recording via a beep that plays every 15 seconds. If you decide to use it, we recommend you make sure you let the other person know you’re recording their every utterance too. CallRecorder has been tailored for Symbian OS, S60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition. Kevin Sharp over at MyDailyApp.com has posted a piece that goes into more depth on the app and gives you a proper insight into all the options CallRecorder offers up, so catch it here.
Last up is Viitrio Converter, a new unit converter app for Symbian OS touchscreen devices, such as the Nokia N97 and 5800. One of the quirkier converters, this new addition to the Ovi Store comes loaded with a heap of more unusual conversion options such as “gigajoules per horsepower-hour”… no, we don’t understand either, although we are intrigued. Kevin Sharp went off on an exploratory mini adventure with this app. Who knew unit converters could inspire you to learn more about the “dynamics of planetary orbits”? It’s certainly worth a read if you’re on the hunt for a smart touchscreen converter.

It’s hard for me to look at this post without asking myself: Why?! Why did you (and MyDailyApp for that matter) highlight Viitrio Converter?!
It’s an example of a lot of what’s wrong in the Ovi Store. I won’t criticize the functions, because obviously Viitrio has a lot to offer, but look at the UI, please look at the UI. It seems that it just got out of 1987! Poor taste of colors, no visual UI at all, just a bunch of squares and words. And the unit selection screen isn’t even finger friendly on touch. Plus it costs how much? 4.50 EUR. Over priced, especially when you think that a converter is nothing but a glorified calculator.
I would love it if someone stops and thinks about the image applications like this convey about the Ovi Store, Nokia, and developing Symbian applications for that matter.
On a personal note, I’d like to add that I use Converter Touch ( http://store.ovi.com/content/710CFC6DAF39E149E040050A873241A5) on my 5530XM, and it looks awesome, performs awesome, and always wows me in terms of how this app’s UI has been thought. OffScr tech have been doing a killer job, and Converter Touch is one of those applications that show it. Plus, it’s free. Put a screenshot of Converter Touch next to one from Viitrio and you’ll know you’ll probably never use Viitrio again, even if it has a lot more conversion scales and units.
That’s my 2 cents, from a person who is very passionate about Symbian & Nokia, but who’s starting to feel that these 2 companies like to shoot themselves in the feet at each and every opportunity they have.

“This item is not available for your country.”
What makes this post totally irrelevant and useless.

Hi Breno. Are there any apps you’d suggest we highlight that you reckon other readers might enjoy? Be great if you’ve got any you think we should have a closer look at here on Conversations.

I agree with Rita, this is very poor marketing of the Ovi Store. If you are going to highlight apps, make sure that they actually are amazing apps in both functionality and UI.
P.S. I was surprised to find yet another Nokia blog that I’d never heard of, “MyDailyApp.com”. I understand that Nokia is a big company but they really need to consolidate all of these different websites & blogs. If all of the Nokia blog sites were accessed off “Conversations” not only would it make it easier for Nokia consumers to follow it would also have the benefit of providing multiple articles per day unlike some of the blog sites which are lucky to get one a week.

The constant delays in the release of this product is really testing my loyalty and patience with Nokia…I have given up my iPhone 3GS (sold) to go back to Nokia with this device and has been on pre order for good few weeks now…and still there’s no official announcement or exact date from Nokia when I will receive my unit.
I feel Nokia is losing the customer by lack of clear and concise communication and if they set a date for release then they should live up to it otherwise don’t mention one or estimate it better. I understand they want to improve things before the shipping etc. but they should have anticipated these improvements or more time would be required…the least they can do now is come clean with firm dates they can live up to please Nokia?????
