Design-by-communityGLOBALDesign by Community is back with a vengeance. Now, it’s time to vote for your favourite concept sketch. Will you opt for an angular or a curved design? A fully metal back, or one with rubberised edges? Cast your vote and let us know. After your votes have been cast, the sketch with the highest number of ballots will be transformed into a 3D render. We’ll have the poll open for a week, so get in quick and let us know which one of the sketches gets your vote:

all 3 look good, lets make em!!!, stick a fast CPU (~1Ghz A8) in there and gobs of RAM ( 1GB or so.. it’s relatively cheap anyways.. ).

I voted design #1 as it is most distinct, however it would be cool to get the hardware button centered up a bit and maybe a hardware call and hangup button?

    Reply

    Tom Chiverton Reply:

Why on earth would you want hardware make/break call buttons ? It’s a *touch* screen. It reconfigures itself to what is required there and then.

For me, option 1 was the best of a bad bunch though, no hardware keyboard – typing lots on a touch screen is a poor experience.

    Adam F Reply:

I like having hardware buttons available, touchscreen is great but it is still a phone, it would be nice to be able to hang up a call without having to navigate through menus on the touchscreen ( provided you’ve wandered off into another application while on the call or something ), call button is nice to be setup that when it is pressed it launches directly into the dialer application vs having to press home/menu button, find dialer, launcher dialer.

    Doug Reply:

Besides the fact that some of us like hardware buttons, they also double as shortcuts to the call log, which is nice too.

    Shinigami Reply:

    They already made these:
    Nokia N8 – sketch one
    Nokia X6 – sketch two
Nokia 5800 – sketch fifteen (jk)

Personally I’d prefer hardware buttons (make/break call) rather than no hardware buttons. How am I supposed to answer a call with no hardware buttons while wearing gloves? Press that one single button in the middle? And end call with the same button? And repeat last call with same button? And how do I reject a call then?

    yann Reply:

    @Shinigami

It’s a matter of personal choice. Those sketches are made for touch phones. It’s easy to make all things that you mentioned with buttons from a side of the phone.

Otherwise, if you prefer there are lots of models with buttons like E-series and etc.

    Can i make a suggestion?
    If someone is concern.
Why there must be a button in front of the phone? Isn’t possible to make the whole front phone, from one end to another screen? Full screen? With stereo speakers from both sides on the bottom.
Having infra-red for being universal remote control.
I’m not a designer, or else i would make a sketch.

Also would like to point that according those 3 sketches isn’t possible to have optical zoom. In my opinion.

And besides, this is just a concept. Most of what people want crammed inside is impossible within 8mm.

    Reply

    James Reply:

I disagree. I’ve got an N900 and thought having no buttons on the front would be great. However having use it and having accidentally either answered calls in my pocket or cut the caller off many times, I now think that two accept reject buttons on the front that have a physical feel/action would be much better.

You have to allow some side edges so hands aren’t always touching the screen in landscape mode. Your thumbs would obscure the display were the sides not there.

Sometimes you have to imagine using a device to understand why things worked out as they did.

I liked design 2, but all are pretty good looking. I just hope the speaker grilles in 2 aren’t black plastic, but metallic to match the back in final form. Otherwise, it looks like a Storm.

you sir, have the same ideas as me (:
Full screen, no vertical side borders, infrared so you can use it with any tv, also nothing’s impossible in the future we will have phones that neednt be thicker then 8mm.

Well loved all three, I use N97 but the thing I dont like is the metal, i guess its aluminum comes off after three to four months of usage and the phone looks awful.

Read up on how anondized aluminum and how the color won’t fade or chip off. Basically, the aluminum is dyed before it is hardened instead of being painted after the fact.

The 3rd one looks great – I like this sleek and curvy design!

    Reply

    christexaport Reply:

Its decent, but it looks too much like the HTC Droid Eris, a low end device. I think looking like a cheap model would be a mistake, which is why I immediately eliminated 3. 3 sort of looks like the X6, but if you make those speaker grills colored to match the casing with metallic, it will differentiate itself.

Plus, I’ve seen 3’s style elsewhere before, but 1 and 2 are refreshing and look more expensive.

    Tochi Reply:

Nah 3 is much better. 1 looks like the N8 but not better, 2 trying too much. 3 strikes a balance. A matter of choice of course.

  6. Micky Says:

Sketch 1 looks similar to an N8
Sketch 2 looks similar to an X6 (with an old style mini usb, NOT a MicroUSB)
Sketch 3 looks similar to an E71 (minus keyboard obviously)

I voted for Sketch 1, and if it had an hardware qwerty, powerful cpu, lots of ram, and phone memory, it would be a winner.

    Andi Reply:

    1. I agree with Micky, look a lot like an N8. Were there any usability tests for the bottom-left corner button? Is it comfortable to use(haven’t tested yet the N8).
    2. Agree again! this is my least favorite. Looks the least sophisticated in my opinion.
    3. Looks like a Samsung Gallaxy S with the square button there. Although not a big fan of Gallaxy, I like this one.

I guess I like best #1, without a QWERTY pls. If it has the same touch as on iPhone or at least Nexus One it will be super awesome.

    christexaport Reply:

I think the N97 gave them enough data for the button placement. Its good for right handers, though left handers may not like it. It rests naturally where the thumb lies in either orientation, just like the lovely space key on the N900 everyone initially cried about, something I hope they don’t change.

    Reply

    Tochi Reply:

Not to impressed with the placement of the space key on N900, I keep hitting key ‘m’ most ofmthe time :) .

Posted from my N900 – love it but hate it sometimes

  7. Gary H Says:

No.1 is a flattened version of the Nokia N8, and it was decided then that optical zoom wasn’t needed when you can zoom and crop photos afterwards. LED flash isn’t required, except as a torch, or special effects on the N900. Lens cover wastes 2mm, collects dust & no longer required. Since all that voting, the game’s changed. With all that minimalism going on, we need some detail to please the eye.

New Motorola is a good example…… but exposing the frame on the outside leads to antennae problems…

I still think the E71 is one of the most attractive industrial designs ever produced by Nokia, so I voted for it’s touchscreen look-a-like: #3. I don’t like the camera bump and excessive bezel, but I do like the rounded corners.

    Reply

  9. Guillaume B Says:

#1 looks like it’s been designed by the same people as the N8. If the handset is ever produced, I would expect this design to be chosen, as it point to a consistent design language within Nokia.

#2 has a fresh look, I really like it. Screams “high-end”. That’s my favorite. That’s the kind of design that, in my opinion, would make other smartphone users jealous.

#3 looks like it’s been designed by a certain Taiwanese manufacturer whose name consists of three letters. That’s not a problem in itself, but it doesn’t really look like a Nokia design.

I disagree with your comment about #3 looking like an HTC, I don’t recall an HTC device looking like that. On the other hand, the E71 and E72 have pretty much that shape. I picked #3!

My favorite is the second one as well. It is different than the other phones in the market.
And for some reason, I am attracted to the design of the speakers. It adds a nice and distinctive look to the phone.

The third one looks too classic and as well as its features, a concept phone should be differentiated with its looks as well.

Would have been cool to see some calling buttons next to the menu key but unfortunately the market seems to be moving away from that.

I voted for sketch 1, the reason I did was because of it’s lens cover. It’s the most pocketfriendly lens cover. It can’t open by itself when it’s in your pocket unlike sketch 2 and sketch 3.

Also the design is the most original, even though it resembles the n8 a bit. Sketch 3 looks like a sleeker 5230 and sketch 2 like a sleeker x6.

If I would’ve to choose which one I would get out of the inner pocket of my jacket it would be sketch 1. The reason van this is that when you get it out of your pocket you wouldnt notice it’s a phone at first glance. That’s how elegant the design is.

On a side note, those sketches took long enough:P

Sketch # 1 is the best. I like that look a lot more than the rounded corners that every other phone (iPhones, HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S) now has. And I like the automatic lens cover that is also in most pocket cameras. That way you can’t forget the lens cover open and the lens is always protected when you put it in pocket.

The thing that I don’t understand is why the phones must be so thin. I hate it. I have big hands and the phones today feel like toys made for children. Make ‘em at least twice as thick, 20 mm minimum. That way the phone is better to hold and you can fit the hardware inside a lot easier. And it will fit in pockets, because most people don’t wear skin tight clothing.

One more thing. Big NO to edge-to-edge screens. It makes the phone unnecessarily vulnerable to cracking when accidentally dropped.

Yeah, people probably said that already but I’ll say it again anyway. This series of posts acquired a sour taste after that Finnish guy wrote that Nokia lost itself to this kind of initial design driven by user input. You guys are in a situation right now where you need to come up with a “wow!” device. _One_ device, cool, and very distinct from other Nokia devices. Obvious positive and superior features that work Right now and in the Real World.

Go get N8 on the market already. And go release the next thing, please. Don’t ask for our dreams, just do it and let us start dreaming about buying one. Do it well and I’m sure it will be cool, even if nobody asked for it specifically. Just do what you know you can do, maaan!…. Use the force. Trust your guts.

    Did Nokia lose its guts?

You asked about the OS… I don’t give a damn about the OS. Whatever has a free PDF reader will do. My girlfriend bought a 5800 after my persistent recommendations. I don’t actually own one, but I am/was a Nokia fanboy. When we discovered Adobe’s official PDF reader app was like US$15 I was embarrassed and ashamed. W T F. and there was simply no alternative. Well, there was one actually, running some old program under some kind of emulator. Ridiculous… I have an N800 myself, and it comes preloaded with a PDF reader. I could not imagine that could be a problem. We are both researchers and read a lot of PDF articles, so that was very important.

PDF, what else?… Foursquare! Foursquare released apps for many different platforms, but skipped Symbian. W T F??? And as happened to them, it happened to other companies. Hear this warning Nokia. People just don’t feel like making Symbian apps!!! Wake up! Shake it up!

Do some friggin marketing. I heard dozens of people impressed by Apple’s videophone program when it was launched. They had no idea this kind of stuff was already possible, already available in other platforms, such as yours. i.e. we have impressionable people not being impressionated. Go impressionate them, you dumb losers!!!!

About “non-limited multitasking”… Yeah, I also think Apple’s restrictions kind of suck. But they are right in doing it. That way they only delifer what they promise, and avoid crashes and making the system freezes because of too many wild apps at the same time. I freeze my N800 routinely.

There is no unlimited multitasking, because the power of the system is limited. What you need is advanced handling of these resources. You need a system that is able to multitask without ever making you loe control of stuff. without even reaching that terrible point where you wuddenly have too much stuff going on, and _YOU CAN’T ABORT ANY OPERATIONS_, and the system i stuck, frozen doing something too big. And you can’t stop it, cancel, anything. I ___HATE___ that. If the choice is between a very restrictive multitasking that might be using less resources than possible, and this kind of BADLY MANAGED multitasking, I prefer to go with the other one, because it has an idea of management, and is not just a wild land where anything can happen.

So stop doing this easy unlimited multitasking speech, and show us some actual responsible resource management tool. Show us something even better than messages of “you have exausted the memory” appearing too late, and without much you can do after that other than stare at the message…

And let me reinforce something. So some nice demo videos of you phones, please. I remember when the N97 was out. A few days later the only video I was on YouTube was of a guy handing the phone to some lady (his mother/wife/sister???), and she plays with it a little and says “oh, yeah, cool”. W T F????

Now you put these videos of some guy (Nokian?) talking hours and hours about this or that little feature. Guy rehearsed the video like one time, and than talked a lot, yadda yadda… The vide is OK, but it should not be the ONLY FRIGGIN VIDEO.

Get some hot chick who can speak well, and make some short one-minute clips showing one or two things working. think “MTV speed”. Yes, shallow, dumb, whatever… that is what works. We are not in a friggin university class here, dude. It’s not TED talk of Symbian^3.

Ah, and please drop this stupid “^3″ thing. It’s stu^pid. “Symbian 3″ is perfect.

Get some competent marketing/advertising people to work for you for once, good grief!… do you have some kind of “let’s incentive amateurs and beginners” policy going on? It’s OK to have their material, you know, put it there, but do create something better too on the side!!

I mean, do it when you RELEASE THE DAMNED THING FOR SALE!…. Yeah. Make it availabe, than please make some cool advertising videos. Hot chick on youtube displaying simple and cool features.

Not nerd guy talking for hours. I’m a nerd, I watched the video alright… But you need something else too. Not strange businessman type of guy typing for hours on tablet (N800 video… look for it on youtube, it’s there!) HOT CHICK. Colored hair, great body, talks well and fast. Think Mithbusters Keri Byron!

You have the perfect design (you have ALL designs, you definitely get it right somewhere sometime). HW if perfect (yeah, do the capacitive screen thing too.. whatever), now get you software right. Nobody cares Symbian and QT are FLOSS… I am a foss lover, but you can’t just keep talking that like it really mattered in the end and compensated the obvious lack of applications. And get some fing hot chicks selling your stuff. Go watch “America’s next top model” and try to learn something!!!! “What not to wear” too! I love to see the nerds out from the dungeon, but it doesn’t hurt to see other “I’m a mac” folks playing along too.

You are always getting late. Your “time to market” is obviously getting damaged by some damned stupid bureaucracy in the middle. Maybe the focus on fewer devices could help on that too, and not just on making the customers choose…

Reduce time of innovations to market. Get actual applications running on the thing, and not just promises. Get the thing on the hands of pretty woman (the Larissa Riquelme phenomenon was great, you should learn something with that.) And please cut the stupid fart apps from Ovi store. It looks like a fart store to me, whenever I enter there I see the stupid fart apps, and I think “yeah, it suits the store”

If I am going to look at butt pictures, I don’t want to look at the icons of fart apps. I prefer the derrière of pretty ladies if that is really necessary. But I actually prefer not to see naked posteriors of anyone when I enter Ovi store, that’s just too much even for my depraved mind. So please cut the fart apps. Yeah, censor them!!! Put on a hidden page whatever. Not butts on Ovi store plz.

Something like that… I hope some of that passes through from mine to your troubled minds.

To be honest, with all it’s open OS huhaaa and multiple OS support. This Nokia U-series requires new design, something radical, something that blows the mind. A design that is new and identifiable on the new approached of the phone BUT certainly not a design which resemble the old product line up of Nokia

The Nokia N8! The best camera the world has ever seen in a phone! Even better than a lot of point and shoot cameras! Running on the new Symbian^3 it comes with LOADS of unique features such as Dolby Surround 5.1, USB on-the-go, HDMI out port, anodised aluminium body and not so unique but still very rare 720p video recording at 24 FPS, 12 MP camera with AF and Carl Zeiss lens and a 3.5″ AMOLED, capacitive, multi-touch enabled display.

So you may ask, with so many great exclusive or very rare features why didn’t Nokia made a kick-ass keynote to introduce it? Well, I don’t know, but here is how it should have went:

Have you ever watched an Apple keynote? Well, it goes like this: Steve Jobs rounds up around 8 of the most exciting features about the product he is about to present and usually it adds a 9th as a mysterious one that he only talks about it in the very end of the keynote. When he presented the iPhone 4 he rounded up 8 features and gave them fancy names! iPhone OS 4 renamed the iOS 4, the high-resolution display was called the “retina display†and even a video call was given a different name to make it stand from the crowd. It was called FaceTime! After all of this try to recall the N86 announcement. It was like this: “This is the N86 and the only thing different is that it has a 8MP camera. Done, bye!â€.

Nokia… You’re doing it WRONG! Even the N8 announcement was miserable and it was a whole lot better than the N86! I’ll give an example of what Nokia should learn from Apple!

Nokia N8 keynote should have been publicized for a month. Maybe even leak some exciting features on purpose to sites like Engadget! Tweeting that “something exciting†was coming! Use and abuse their own slogan, something like: “Nokia has always worked on connecting people… now more than ever!â€.

And when the time arrived show off some of the greatest phones Nokia had so far! Show the ones that everyone knows! Show the Nokia 3310 is they need! That is the device EVERYONE had back then! ABUSE your legacy Nokia! Make it sell! And after showing the N95 tell people: “Well, the next step on evolution is arriving… Meet the next revolutionary Nokia! Meet the Nokia N8!â€. Yes, it’s very Apple-like but if it’s working out for them why shouldn’t it work out for you Nokia? It’s better than the ones you’ve been doing, that’s for sure! And do you want to know the 8 features you should really advertise on that keynote?

1: 3.5″ AMOLED capacitive multi-touch enabled display! Show off the multi-touch gestures on photos!

2: 12MP sensor and 720p HD recording. Show AWESOME pictures shot with the N8 and play a nice video filmed with the HD camera on the N8! Impress people! REALLY impress people!

3: Just after showing videos shot with the N8, show people the HDMI out and tell them that the phone records stereo sound and it outputs Dolby Surround, all via the phone! Tell them how useful this is by not needing to carry they’re PC around to show the best videos to the rest of the family!

4: USB on-the-go! What if your friend has a nice video from its vacations on his USB stick, but there isn’t a PC around? No problem with the N8, just connect the USB stick to it and show the video to the rest of the family!

5: Video and photo editor! This is HUGE! For example, Android 2.2 hasn’t a photo editor built-in! And Android is a very well-known and praised OS over the world!

6: Symbian^3 OS! Show off the multitasking capabilities on the device, show them the cover flow mode on the music player, show them Ovi Maps with free navigation, but most importantly: show them the evolution from Symbian^1! Show them that those times of frustration and problems with the OS is over. Show them the unified 1 tap only system all over the UI! Show them the improvements and show them the nice, very nice widgetized homescreen!

7: Browser! Show flash content running on the device and let them know that the browser is based on webkit! Show off how easy it is to get around the page, show pinch-to-zoom and make it look crisp!

8: Video call! HTC made a big deal out of the HTC EVO 4G video call capabilities. Make sure everyone understands that this isn’t like the iPhone limited to Wi-Fi and to other iPhones and that it isn’t a 2nd party app doing the work for you like Qik is doing for the EVO. Let them know it works with all phones since the first 2005 phones that had this feature! Show off a video call with awesome quality!

And do you want the one more thing stuff?

Talk about Qt and how it is compatible with both MeeGo and Symbian^3 devices and show them some of the games built on Qt like Angry Birds, Bounce, Asphalt 5 and show them running on the N900 as well just to show that they run on both devices and make people understand that it is the same version of the game! This will achieve two results! It will call developers to fill the poor Ovi Store with some content and it will show people the great graphics that the N8 can achieve and how good the games look!

Now, is it that hard to do this? I’m just a normal guy and no genius, but I was able to write this. Why can’t such a big company with the possibilities to hire some great people to help them out advertising do it? Why? It’s just so simple….

This website and process of seeking customer feedback on design is seriously flawed. It’s only relevant to evolutionary products. If you think about your main competitor, they don’t ask anybody but surprise people with super-refined designs. The idea of users as designers is a recipe for disaster!

You have to take brand management away from the economists, and give it to real industrial and ‘drama’ designers. Compare this with macaroni. There are hundreds of companies that make macaroni, and you need to differentiate them by putting a Santa Claus on the packaging. You are doing the same now: trying to differentiate by a slightly different shape, radii, speaker holes etc.

But when you compare current Nokia phones with a Leica Camera, that is a true brand carrier and they are created by designers: the marketing is merely information.

D’ailleurs, aucun des téléphones n’a de capteur de luminosité, ou de capteur de proximité.

The real value in a mobile device is not really in its (hardware) design, but in its functionality and the soft aspects of it.

Ok, 1 is clearly looking like an iphone equivalent, 2 looks very much like an x5, and 3 is more like the older nokias- not an ounce of originality amongst them. I would chose 1 as it is at least quite thin and attractive. SYMBIAN NEEDS TO DIE; it just cant keep up any more, phones today are nothing like the phones of a few years ago, infact, they’re not even phones anymore!

As for specs, USB3 is of no use without a lot of storage, and very few people actually use TVout at all; never mind HDMI. Cost:benefit- negligible.

As for controls; how about using the accelerometer and other sensors to minimise the need for them; ie a movement upwards about 600mm followed by a detection on the proximity sensor would indicate lifing the handset to the ear, and the reverse.

Unfortunatly these designs are todays handsets; make any of them now and by the time they reach market they will be bog standard. You need tomorrows!

3- the lens cover of the 2nd

If it is the next flagship, why this phone should have 8MP camera when the N8 will have a 12MP?
About the CPU and other HW features, it should be at least like the HTC Scorpion and do not make the errors of the N97 (too small C: and Ram, etc)

With all respect: Why Nokia can not organise its assortiments on three levels:

a1) simple and durable phones having long living battery without or with GPRS/EDGE like Samsung E1150, C260

a2) simple and durable phones having long living battery with GPRS/EDGE and camera like Samsung E2120

b1) modest phones with good connections like E51

b2) modest phones with the option of using them as 3G WLAN nodes like Symbian S60 3rd phones like E51 with http://www.joikuspot.com programme. A simple 3G phone has the powers of a mini lap top computer, if it can transform 3G connection into WLAN

    c) smart phones and shirt pocket computers

    d*) Apple imitations by design

I think, that Nokia should keep on connecting people with the help of people’s mini lap tops with WLAN to EDGE/3G/HSDPA etc.

Now we are talking too much of amusing people. The business ideas (liikeideat) could execute better the business philosophy (toiminta-ajatus): connection people.

NOKIA, you should be more creative!

If you want a tapper top-down will be your next design language, its fine. But take it even further.

Aluminium is also so 2010.For 2011 and beyond you should look for other material.

I’ll tell you my idea. Create a phone that feels like made from single slab of material. Almost look seamless, no physical button, not even for volume and camera shutter. All button is replace by glowing capacitive button, except the power button at the top.

Again, you still use the tapper design language.

I’ll sketch it and place it on my personal blog tomorrow.

I am a happy owner of a Nokia 5530. I think it’s a killer price/performance phone combo. Up until firmware 20.xxx was unstable and buggy, but 30.xxx made things better. Symbian is an ok operating system, somewhat open, very stable and with a low memory footprint. But after installing SPB Mobile Shell, my experience with the phone was 10 times better. It’s a fantastic front end for Symbian S60V5 phones. I think Nokia should buy or license SPB Mobile Shell for all S60V5 phones, that would help lenghten the Symbian platform against it’s competition.

Is it imbosible to make just one big shiny gorilla glass screen to top of the phone border to border and “optionaly side to side” .. and ad tohose logos etc phone scampled to side of phone maybe better back of phone..

I bet that samsung may make first phone whit has like the new curved one piece all around plastic amoled flexible unbreakable screen wrapped about 60% of phone in future …

until that nokia starts understand that something new desing sells.. probaply follow samsung .. they make a new innovation adding screen to back of phone .. nokia lose market again..

exmp: the samsung wave s8500.. it is cheap. addet innovation from real cameras : camera focus position can be adjust just finger tip anywhere to screen. i has enought specifications .. if they just make border to border main screen to that model .. maybe addet similar OS like nokia has. … then i bet that nokia is losing total those touch screen phone markets…

Normal nokia phones whit keypad are solid awesome desing like sweet candy.. looks good and solid unbreakable.. best in market today :D :P

Definately not 3!! Its an iphone with an N97 camera cover (which nokia had massive problems with scratching the camera lens). I do like 1 but this is basically an N8. And im sure 2 is based on a Sony?? Of them, 1 is my favourite. If this was to slide (like the N97/N900/rumoured N9) the off centre button on the front works really well! It always seems to easily be accessable , whether the phone is opened or closed. PLEASE put a fast CPU in and a good amount of RAM and internal memory, hopefully this lesson was learnt from the N97! As far as OS, i think Symbian seriously need to pull their socks up and come out with something a bit special! I havent used symbian^3 yet but looks pretty much same old symbian. I like the look of MeeGo but THIS HAS TO BE SUPPORTED!! People live for apps these days to customise and make their phones their own. If MeeGo isnt used in all flagship/high end models from now on then developers wont bother. Another lesson hopefully learnt from the N900! I love Nokia and will not change, however i think more user input needs to be taken into consideration, and not just relying on their market presence to sell phones.

    Ok – pay attention.
I voted for 1, since it is the only one of the models actually decent to look at, and the only one where the designer did what we asked to – a single colour phone.
It was also the only one with a possibility to have to functioning lens cover.
Where it most certain will fail is the back cover, soon it will need a napkin and duct tape to stay on place.
Also in the model 3, the more smoother corners ease up the use and make the phone more comfortable to keep in your pocket. But looks like the back cover will be loose in a week. Smooth look, but ugly from the front (where you usually look at it).
The Nr.2 was the only one which looked promising since it had a solid 1 piece back cover.
So now after reading this, make a new round – with new designers.
Quite obvious that model 1 was from the same person who made N8, Nr.2 was from the creator of X6, and the third guy has been making the same stuff since the 90´s.
Thank you from your attention – I cannot wait to get my new phone.

    - sketch 1 : like the N8, nice and seems flatter people like that
    - sketch 2 : like the X series, seems too much a device for me
    - sketch 3 : like N97, seems to have one more button and nice soft 3D design more agreable to handle, not only 2 D flat plans like the 2 others, but on the sketch 2 and 3 the protection of the lense is outside the shape and I am always afraid that it could hit something because of that, and it is less soft shape in the hand because of this, as it is ouside the curves.
    2 more points :
    - PUT A RATHER BIG NOKIA NAME on the top of the back with inox or silver-like letters, for it to be well seen buy other people, it makes free advertissement !
    - PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO PUT USEFUL BUTTONS in addition to touch screen (like we use keybord in addition to mouse for a computer)

These sketches are basically variations of ends of the phone. Is it possible please everybody with the same phone? I might be possible if you make the ends of the phone replaceable. Then it would be possible buy ends that pleases you most. Technically it would be like the other end of Nokia N8, but with some other fastening method than a screw.

Basically camera cover is not needed at all, but if there is one (manual, like 2nd and 3rd sketches) it should be used to instant opening (less than 0.2 seconds) of camera application. You just open the camera cover and shoot before the moment is over.

Sketch 1 definitely. There is no point choosing any other. The Others look like X6 and C6, while the N8 looking one is an innovative design. I like the top and bottom sections of sketch 2 though. Add that to sketch 1.
Replace 8MP normal camera into a Carl Zeiss 8MP with a large lens like the N8’s. Also, add more zoom, even though the pixels go bad.
The RAM must be something that the competition cannot cope (in terms of price vs product); 1GHz is quite common among Smartphones like HTC Disire, HTC Evo 4G, Samsung i9000, iPhone 4 and the likes. come up with a 1.2GHz with 2D and 3D graphic capabilities.
Add a 1500 mAh, dual powered (lithium and solar) battery. The ROM MUST be integrated, unlike the N8, which limits it to 256MB.
Add more colors, especially the Dark grey and Orange (like the N8).
Add a detachable physical keyboard, or come with an option of having it and not having it to target the masses.
Lastly, add a 3.15 MP camera in front for video calling, and make a very simple, aero designed fast-access videocall interface.

I choose the second one too. Sketch 1 is like Nokia N8 and i don’t like its design. Sketch 3 looks like IPhone. And I don’t think that this is good idea to clone IPhone. Skecth 2 is the best. It looks like a next generation of legend Nokia N95 8Gb )) I like it and hope it’ll be a winner.

Hey Nokia, am looking forward to a decent phone from you. Haven’t renewed mine for three years now because there is nothing interesting on the market. Design 1 is great, only make sure to add a fast OS. Also the new phone must respect privacy and not collect any information about phone user. I’m yours then :)

Well, Nokia Team. I prefer you guys to re-design beacause such a same design could be too childish. You must first clear out your mind and think again. Contact me if you want something that could be a design. Furthermore, nowadays, it’s a lil bit hard right to make something more than compact with all avail options that has been voted by the so called community. If it is a lil bit more thick, about a very few milimetres, that should probably a logical idea. A xenon flash with at least a small LED flash could be it. Get it Nokia?

Hi everyone, just wanted to leave my opinion on what I
    want for a perfect phone.

First to say that I consider myself a regular of nokia phones, I had
3650 which represented the biggest change and revolution for me in
phones, camera and Symbian OS was what gave you a wide range of
possibilities never seen before, after I had the n70, and another revolution
incorporating the gps, and finally I have the n95 8gb a very mobile
    complete in terms of features.

My opinion on what would be a good mobile:
    - To say that I agree with the specifications provided to
    now by other users.
-The battery is essential, we talk about phones with best
specifications every day, very powerful phones, but it’s worth so much
power, if for example the gps you dare not use because
battery will not hold on, and you’re going to run out of battery, there is no battery
calls, the main function of a phone. When I choose a phone,
of the points I made up my mind is the battery life.
    - The camera: The camera we have a reflex, we know better than anyone
the difference is in the optics, not the Mpx. I therefore
left with a camera that makes a difference in the pictures by a
good optics, and not by x megapixels. The incorporation of optical zoom,
would be good too. The cover fundamental.
    - The use of memory cards also see it essentially allows
everyone has the space you actually need.
    - ROM and RAM memory: One of the weakest points of my mobile nokia,
is that when you install multiple applications that gives you a mobile phone
use of the slow pain that works, not to mention my gallery
images, which takes 11 seconds to open, I know that I have 1500 images,
but something has 8 gb mobile. Basic good processor and good
    memory.
    - GPS: N95 GPS signal takes a lot to take. Seek to improve
    this point.
    - OS: android certainly talk about the possibility of multi-so right.
    - The system’s touch screen: I think without doubt, a screen
Touch is the only option. Users who know the iphone, stand
Touch your system is unmatched. It would be a point to get, even
    the iphone in that regard.
    - Screen size: bigger is better, period,
    - Size: All Nokia phones I’ve had, have always been
“Bricks.” I do not really have imported, I preferred characteristics
size. The dimensions discussed other users seem to me
best combined with a light weight as light as possible.
    - Important: We are talking about a phone that will be released .. when? Today
phone with a 1Ghz processor is well within three months longer. By
last words, in addition to that provided by the users, would be either a
“Gift” – “secret” by adding something new to nokia phone.
Sorry my English translated by Google xD

Number 1 is very good but 3 things are missing:
    1) The interface of the software. We hope S^4 will be as good as WebOS from Palm
    2) For the phone to take good quality pictures an optical stabilization is needed.
    3) this phone is not a revolution. We would like to have a phone that can be charged wirelessly like the Palm Pre. We would also like a capacitive stylus inside the phone as the N900.

    Nokia must be bolder!

It just looks like you’ve taken bits from your older models. Make something new and stop making camera lenses that protrude out of the back of the phone. The N8 would be a much nicer phone if it didn’t have that shed of a camera on it’s back. Also stop putting slider covers over the camera lense. The Android and iPhone devices seem to get by without them.

I voted for N#3 because it is handsome edges are rounded so less damage will occur. There should be a slim hard rubber like protection line around the whole body (crash protection and prevents from sliding out of holders hand.) It looks cool too.
The inside cannot hold everything but maybe you could manage that one can make phonecalls too.

we all know everybody is following iphone.nokia should establish your own way.

nokia now gets all the iphone’s advantages, but over take iphone just by a 12 mp camera is not a good enough idea.

iphone’s games attracts people most, the best mobile games now still belongs to iphone.but they are all touch screen games.”touch screen only” is not good for all kinds of games.for some games, like Racing games, fighting games, shooting, sports,Actions and ARPGs etc, which require a accurate, short time respond, touch screen is not the best solution. And fingers often block the view.i always remember the fantastic experience i got from N-Gage Classic,FIFA,Colin Mcrae,Call of Duty,ONE,etc.cuz Physical keys is a need for real good games.

no one have dual LED on Camera…

this designs have nothing to do with community wishes… thats only regular nokia designs for a future phone.

I voted for design 1. I think that is by far the most elegant design of those three even though it has little bit same form factor as N8. Actually all versions have some sort of resemblence of some current models which is not necessarily a good thing here. I would have expect more from a concept models. For example take a look at this http://designfabulous.blogspot.com/2010/07/htc-1.html .

Also all the models have the same design problem as many of Nokia’s current phones seem to have. That is the camera. Take a look at HTC or Apple. Their cameras are much more subtle on the back and they work well enough. Even though you have camera in your phone, it doesn’t need to look like one.

BTW this was a great idea. I hope you (Nokia) really listen to the customers even though I am not sure how good this actually represents the whole customer base.

i am guessing this is going to be an N series high end device. Seeing as the new High End devices will run Meego. I have to say sketch 1 looks suspiciously like the N9 phone especially showing 8Mp camera with xenon flash but there is no QWERTY KB? This is my favourite – sketch 1. Sketch doesn’t show the top view of the handset. Only the bottom view showing HDMI, USB & right stereo speaker. So my question 1, Is this the N9? My question 2, Is there a right stereo speaker? Question 3, Is there a QWERTY KB?

This is my opinion based on what I know about the N9.
Also the rumoured specs of the N9’s internal circuitry are a 1Ghz possibly TI OMAP ARM 9 as Nokia are supposed to bw in a Law suit against Qualcomm so i guesse the rumour to use Snapdragon can not be true or can it? Screen on the N9 is rumoured to be 4″ capacitive. N8 being the second capacitive for Nokia.

Hopefully the CPU will be an ARM 9 dual core?, 512MB RAM, 512/1GB ROM, NDFLASH Mass storage 16GB/64GB. GPU unknown?, 4″ screen/AMOLED/S-LCD? 8MP cam again suspiciously N9? BT is probably SIG Alliance V3.0. WiFI b,g,N. HSUPA, HSDPA all major 3G freqencies no doubt. GSM, EDGE, GPRS will probably be Class 33 with more bandwith & more slots available to use. FM Radio/Transmitter maybe? MicroSD very probably?

There will probably be standard Proximity sensor, Ambient Light sensor, accelerometer. But will Nokia introduce Magnetometer like on the N8, even Gyroscope WHY not?, as some HTC’s had Gyro before Apple IPH4. OH & USB OTG will probably be in the works. Who knows BT4.0 soon will also help bring lower power consumption to Mobile phones.

I also think there should be development in areas of physical battery life energy not just making changes within the OS enviroment – but a lot is happneing in the OS environment for battery life with a no of Technologies & applications & priograms & the Core OS itself.
