GLOBAL – Want to get a green Nokia N8 but you don’t like the colour? Well, now it’s possible. Nokia and phone operator Telefónica have introduced a new, innovative offer that allows customers to make a greener choice when purchasing the new Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 devices. Find out about the devices’ environmentally-friendly credentials and the special features that come with this offering after the break.

So what makes this offering particularly “green”? These special versions of the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 come with an eco apps folder, packed with green content, such as the educational game, Climate Mission, and other third-party apps, plus a link to the device’s eco-profile – Nokia’s full declaration of the environmental impact of each model.

The user’s start-up guide is condensed down to a single page, representing a 95 per cent saving in paper. The packaging is also minimal – just enough to protect the devices in transit – and 100 per cent recyclable. Both phones come with a high-efficiency energy charger to reduce charging times – the devices also remind you to unplug when charging is finished.

As we’ve noted before, the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 are two of Nokia’s most environmentally friendly phones ever. Both feature an energy-saving mode, a power-efficient AMOLED screen and an ambient light sensor.  Both use innovative new materials: the Nokia N8 contains bio-plastics, while the Nokia C7 is the first in the industry to use bio-paints. Like all Nokia phones, they are free of PVC, BFR (brominated flame retardants) and RFR (chlorinated and brominated compounds and antimony trioxide).

This offer is part of Nokia’s and Telefónica’s “Green Customer Experience” cooperation. Both companies have been recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as leaders in the field of sustainability: Nokia heads the technology sector whilst Telefónica leads the telecommunications sector.

The project will launch first in Spain, and will gradually be introduced to other markets in which Telefónica is present, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Argentina, Peru and Chile.

This is the first fully integrated “green” joint offer with an operator and phone company, aimed at providing an environmentally geared experience from the moment they think about purchasing their mobile, throughout its use and all the way until the end of its useful life.

Update: Telefonica has not ranged all the possible colours and, in any case, the Nokia C7 only comes in silver, black and brown. So the headline is not literally true.
