Open Letter from CEO Stephen Elop, Nokia and CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft

Published by the Team on February 11, 2011

Open letter CEO

GLOBAL – Today in London, our two companies announced plans for a broad strategic partnership that combines the respective strengths of our companies and builds a new global mobile ecosystem. The partnership increases our scale, which will result in significant benefits for consumers, developers, mobile operators and businesses around the world. We both are incredibly excited about the journey we are on together.

Don’t miss

While the specific details of the deal are being worked out, here’s a quick summary of what we are working towards:

• Nokia will adopt Windows Phone as its primary smartphone strategy, innovating on top of the platform in areas such as imaging, where Nokia is a market leader.

• Nokia will help drive and define the future of Windows Phone. Nokia will contribute its expertise on hardware design, language support, and help bring Windows Phone to a larger range of price points, market segments and geographies.

• Nokia and Microsoft will closely collaborate on development, joint marketing initiatives and a shared development roadmap to align on the future evolution of mobile products.

• Bing will power Nokia’s search services across Nokia devices and services, giving customers access to Bing’s next generation search capabilities. Microsoft adCenter will provide search advertising services on Nokia’s line of devices and services.

• Nokia Maps will be a core part of Microsoft’s mapping services. For example, Maps would be integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine and adCenter advertising platform to form a unique local search and advertising experience.

• Nokia’s extensive operator billing agreements will make it easier for consumers to purchase Nokia Windows Phone services in countries where credit-card use is low.

• Microsoft development tools will be used to create applications to run on Nokia Windows Phones, allowing developers to easily leverage the ecosystem’s global reach.

• Microsoft will continue to invest in the development of Windows Phone and cloud services so customers can do more with their phone, across their work and personal lives.

• Nokia’s content and application store will be integrated with Microsoft Marketplace for a more compelling consumer experience.

We each bring incredible assets to the table. Nokia’s history of innovation in the hardware space, global hardware scale, strong history of intellectual property creation and navigation assets are second to none. Microsoft is a leader in software and services; the company’s incredible expertise in platform creation forms the opportunity for its billions of customers and millions of partners to get more out of their devices.

Together, we have some of the world’s most admired brands, including Windows, Office, Bing, Xbox Live, NAVTEQ and Nokia. We also have a shared understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a mobile ecosystem, which includes the entire experience from the device to the software to the applications, services and the marketplace.

All the details: Nokia Lumia 800

All about our stunning new smartphone.

The specs; the price; the facts

Today, the battle is moving from one of mobile devices to one of mobile ecosystems, and our strengths here are complementary. Ecosystems thrive when they reach scale, when they are fueled by energy and innovation and when they provide benefits and value to each person or company who participates. This is what we are creating; this is our vision; this is the work we are driving from this day forward.

There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them.

There will be challenges. We will overcome them.

Success requires speed. We will be swift.

Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed.

The marriage between Nokia and Microsoft looks not to be a
successful story. People trust Nokia on mobile phone but people may not trust
Microsoft’s windows phone. Certainly not all Symbian developer are willing to
transit windows phone, I think lots of them will transit to Android.  The will for application developer is
    important for Nokia’s success.

Nokia’s success better not bet on Microsoft, Nokia should
depend on itself, like MeeGo.  Why Nokia
not invest on QT and Linux? Make it easy, make it beautiful.  The success of a hardware company should
depend on the perfect combination of its hardware and software.

Nokia please make your best on smart phone, don’t make your
phone feel slow reaction, you save user’s time and you save your market.

I so think the mobile phone should work seamlessly with
tablet because people will have both of them on hand, one for fun one for
    communication.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself but this announcement destroys any possibility that I will ever buy or recommend a Nokia phone at any time in the future.  Over the past few years I have watched as Nokia has pursued what has been, to me, a policy of self-destruction starting with the apparent dismantling of Maemo and subsequent surrender of what would very likely have been the ownership of the first, and probably the best, mobile O/S on the planet.  The position of Android could have belonged to Maemo, as far as I have been able to tell from reports I have heard.

My first really good mobile phone was a Nokia, a 6620 with Symbian, and I mourn losing it to this day but I will not buy a phone powered by a Microsoft system since I had to support one.  Too many bugs, too many dead ends; all software, and, no, the phone was not a Nokia.  Now none of mine ever will be.

I’m still hoping for Nokia to revert this decision. I would have bought the N9, really a great phone, but I’m going to get another android phone instead because the N9 has not future.

Apparently Windows 8 managed power by shutting down rather than detect idle. That means display goes blank and if it does not then battery runs down. Compare an OS such as Unix (such as Android or iOS) where IPC will block and CPU turned off until event while TFT still holds image. You have have to use Windows Phone quickly like that pommy dickhead in the ad.

    April 15th, 2012-
Open Memo to Nokia and the Government of Finland.

As of April 2012 none of the goals outlined in the original open letter by Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer dated Feb 11, 2011 have been met or are even remotely close to being met. During this time Nokia has lost it’s leadership position, the results of Stephen Elop’s mismanagement and progressive dismatling of Nokia are becoming more and more tangible, sales are constantly decreasing, the stock price is ridiculously low, employee morale is at an all time low, and warning voices are being ignored. I have purchased 9 different Nokia Phones through the years and I’m still using one today, In light of the strategy fiasco since Stephen Elop took over as CEO I respectfully urge the Board of Directors to act responsibly in the best interest of shareholders and the company as a whole and shift the current direction which will only lead to Nokia and her Patent Portfolio to eventually being split in parts and sold to different companies in the future. An investigation should be opened by the Finnish Government led by Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen to determine if Stephen Elop is really acting on Nokia’s best interest as a CEO, as bankrupting Nokia will affect thousands of Finnish families whose income depends on the continued operations of Nokia.
