HONG KONG – The next version of Symbian, called Symbian Belle, is announced today. Hot on the heels of the Symbian Anna release, the latest version of our smartphone operating system looks and works better than ever before. Headline features are gorgeous new widgets, more customisation options, new apps and built-in NFC functionality. As before, the upgraded operating system will be available on new Symbian smartphones and will be made available as a free update for users with phones running Symbian Anna.

Symbian Belle adds to the work done by Anna to improve and modernise the Symbian experience. Here are some of the highlights of what you’ve got to look forward to:

Free-form, differently-sized, live widgets: widgets like the clock, email, music player, favourite contacts and the calendar have been redesigned and now come in five different sizes and rearranged to create a completely personalised set of screens. There are also new ‘Toggle’ widgets for tasks like switching on Bluetooth and changing profiles.

More homescreens: with Symbian Belle the maximum number of homescreens rises from three to six, so now you can have absolutely everything close at hand.

Improved status bar: the status bar sports a modern, flat look and incorporates a pull down notifications tab that incorporates common settings and notification of incoming messages, missed calls and the rest.

Modernised navigation: the navigation and options bar at the bottom of the screen sports a modern, new look, similar to that first seen on the Nokia N9.

New apps: a new suite of powerful business apps from Microsoft includes Lync (IM for businesses, like Microsoft Communicator), Sharepoint, OneNote, Exchange ActiveSync and PowerPoint Broadcaster.

Informative lock screen: the lock screen now tells you about missed calls, messages in your inbox and more, so you can check your phone at a glance. You can now also add a coloured wallpaper to your lock screen.

NFC devices: With Symbian Belle, Near-Field Communications (NFC) is now deeply integrated into the operating system, so you can share pictures, connect with accessories, and check-in – all with just a tap.

Visual multitasking: Now you can flick between larger live images of your open apps to see what’s going on at a glance and move quickly between your apps.

    I think NOKIA realize there are issues with Belle, and they want to try and iron out as many bugs as they can, before the release Belle to NOKIA consumers.

    Hope Belle is good. Anna seems okay tbh.

      No, it’s jut not possible. There’s no NFC chip in the Nokia N8.

    nokia, please stop frustrating your fans. if belle is ready…then Y is nokia not releasing it..?? nokia is only losing its fans….nothing else. when android has climbed up the market so high, Y is nokia not releasing belle?? i am a user of c7-00 and i am dying to use belle so much. if it is delayed further, for no reason…. atleast i am sure to shift to android….as many of my friends have already done… nokia PLEASE……..LISTEN TO YOUR FANS….

      Hi Dushyant, thanks for your feedback! We will release Belle for older Symbian devices as soon as it’s ready and offers the best possible user experience for people. The optimization for older Symbian devices takes a while, as their hardware is slightly different from the new models that have been optimized for Belle right from the start. We ask you to be patient for a little while longer – Belle is on its way!

    Symbian Anna is a total dissapointment from Symbian 3. Flat Monochrome icons which are hard on the eye! Nokia is taking a step back 20 years in time with this relese. You can down load themes, however the original icon set is not available and why do i have to install an entire theme just to change the icons. Come on Nokia you can do better than this! It’s no wonder that people are turning to alternative phone producers.

    I one month ago buy 701 it work good and Belle good looking no any problem in operating, internet & downloading is very fast but browser could not support flash video this is old problem of Nokia mobiles

    Dear Nokia!

    Please don’t bother your customers what is your mean from that joking,first you appear of belle and then remove it from server,

    So when you do something a lot of people have focus on you,
    so when you do something so please provide information about it to your customers don’t waste the time of them.
    Respect them if really you want to serve your customer and see them happy????

    And the waiting went to a very long way, so please upload the belle update on your server finished the waiting of us????

    i don’t know what is going there but i know that you discourage your customers and us!

    we tired from waiting for Belle update and if the update not come in few days, i will never purchase more Nokia phone,
    they just produce or lunch lot of phone every month this mean that no one of Nokia phone sell in market more then a few months because they never produce a phone with full support they first make some bugs in phone and then in every 4 or 6 month take out an update for fixing of that bug or bugs this is not supporting just they play a game with customers mean they want to show that we lunch update for every phone just fix a small bug no changing and etc!
    and showing to customers we supporting you!!!

    Today Market is Global, Be Honest and SUPPORT your customers in Real words, if you want stay in market and save your shares!

    I think Elop and the CEO before him  just follow that few words and nothing else mean:

                     ONE MAN ONE POLICY???????????????

    And that sentence mean losing share in market and customers in very near future as you saw and will see?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hmm This article has been done before, why now again Ian? wanted to assure that the Symbian platform isn’t “forgotten”? and with no indication to any release date also makes it less motivated… could it be that there isn’t that much to write about these days? Any way why hasn’t the swype navigation (closing/switching between apps) been implemented on to the Symbian? i feel that that would be the natural step after that the N9 was released…

    Well the only thing that is really annoying in the current situation is the fact that NOKIA does not seem to have the courage to inform us about what is going on at the moment. A simple “yes, we start rolling out Belle just as promised in Q4/2011″. Or, if not, “for whatever technical reason the roll out will be delayed to Q1/2012″. This information already would calm down the situation. Hopefully if delayed it is really technical reason…and not just increasing xmas-sales. And we all know waht Q1/2012 means…not before 28. March 2012 :-(
    Well, please NOKIA, take all your courage and tell us the simple truth – truth can be a very peaceful experience!

      Ok all things you said it is right but why you first show a leak version on NaviFirm and after a few hours you deleted it (Mean for N8) what was the reason and what was your mean from playing that game?
      Even the Version till now is on NaviFirm (for N8) but no file for Download???

      And when you (Nokia) do something wrong so at the same time provide information to your customers and inform them about that thing!
      and why you support the leak version if really it is not official, i think you can more understand what i am saying then other people!

    @Heidi: Thanks Heidi/NOKIA for finding clear words and bringing light into this situation and scene which has been darkened more and more by rumours… But the more rumours, or let’s maybe better call it hope, the more it is clear that a lot of people out there are really longing for Belle…and NOKIA has still responsibility for them because these customers ensured you earning money – even though LUMIA 800 is there…

      It was also clear when earlier was stated that Belle will be available “later this year” or was it “Q4/2011″. Very clearly this announcement means “maybe first half of 2012 and if not then later”

      X6 software was updated several times. It works good now, I guess. After all, it’s a mobile phone, it can’t be updated like forever.

    Nokia going to beaten by samsung, becoz nokia is so lazy and very very unfaithful brand now. We all existing customers r waiting for belle, but nokia is so business minded, they dont want to take risk now, becoz if they release belle now, then the sell of lumia 800, 700 etc will be affected. We all heard lot about lumia 800, but when it come out, not up to date, everything is great, looks, UI, touch interface, but major draw back are, only 3.7 inch screen, at-least 4 inch screen would a great joy, microsim card support, NO FRONT CAMERA, no memory card slot, no flash support in browser, no usb mass storage mode (ZUNE will be ur boss), etc etc………. Listen Nokia FIRE ur engineers, they don’t know how to design a phone and maintain the brand like NOKIA.

      MS make the rules on what specs the devices have to adhere to. nokia took them and made a beautiful device. shut it and go back to your iphone

    So much negativity below. Nokia I’m a loyal fan but also a marketeer, and yes, you must work hard on yr image. Delighted with N8 and looking forward to SB. Also PLEASE make Nokia suite available to us MAC users.

    Belle will be released to old customers 29 February if we are lucky and probably only in selected markeds. Nokia style foot dragging will not end before they are bankrupt or bought by another company.

I am not otherwise conservative.. but then, I can’t win an argument these days Nokia.. my pals have been laughing at me for waiting this long for a Symbian Belle update… they have iPhones and Androids  with them.. for each good thing I find in Nokia, they reply me with atleast 3… I am losing the battle..  I told them N9 will turn the world upside down.. its a remarkable phone beautiful inside out..but didnt’ quite rock the world as expected.. anyways.. Nokia.. I am not leaving you anytime soon.. I am still ready to wait.. but lot many people out there wont be… but I DONT WANT TO WAIT FOR A SYMBIAN BELLE Update which has already running on phones…My N8 is dying for it…  Folks here and Nokia fanboys.. hit ‘Like’ if you stand for the same cause…

    Symbian belle phones are really costly compared to their features i did prefer an android phone which will cost around 15000 which can beat any high range belle running phone. So guys just move on Android is the future….:(

    My n8 is a swap device with a product code for which update is not available through nokia suite. I was asked to contact the nearest nokia care center and have my phone updated.

    However, the Nokia care guys refused to update my phone for free and charged me INR 225 stating that my device is not under warranty anymore. I paid up and did the update as I didnt want to do lots of running around arguing that its not my mistake that they changed my product code when i gave it for repair earlier (my camera stopped working)

    I feel its unfair on the part of Nokia to charge me for  an update which I cannot do myself using nokia suite and when Nokia claims that the update is free for N8 users

      well i am using c7 i am guess itssettings are some for you as well..if you have activated mob internet service use mobile data and switch off  wifi… if not in your case switch off mobile data option and switch on your wifi, click on the wifi notification below and connect to your wifi connection…

      “NFC” is a hardware( an integrated chip), not a software. So any amount of software updating will not give you NFC. If you desperately want NFC, u can have a chip installed.

    1. Messaging Fonts on Belle: Too Big! (Anna font size is better)
    - Please make the fonts smaller same as Anna. I exercise privacy on texting. People beside me clearly reads my messages. The font is set to small but still too big. Very annoying.

    - The Letter Pop-out using querty is too big. It is eye sore when I text. Anna is better.

    2. Music Player on Progress Bar: Too Big! (Make it medium  or small size/ or same height as the time font)

    So far overall UI is better than Anna.

    Hope to include this on next firmware update for Belle.

    When it was in Anna – the Text/Conversations App was spot-on, and Anna for the E7 worked well for our landacape-based devices.After upgrading to Belle – I love it – but the landscape view has done away with the side bar menu that includes emoticons! If I wanted emoticons I have to do it in portrait mode which means the keyboard isn’t used. Why have they done it when the Anna worked brilliantly. It doesn’t make sense!Anyone know of a way round this problem to have the side bar menu (which was on the right side in landscape mode)?? I would be forever grateful! :-)Thank you!

    The Nokia 701 is as good as any Andriod phone I have used so far (I haven’t used the ICS OS as yet!!). I wish that we can use video calling apps on the handset. There is currently no support for any video calling app.
