Nokia N9 apps and software support

Published by Heidi Lemmetyinen on September 27, 2011

ESPOO, Finland –
We have received lots of questions on how Nokia plans to support the Nokia N9 going forward and how many apps there will be available for the device. So we asked Janne Heikkinen, Nokia’s Product Planning Director, whose team has brought the device to the market. According to Janne, Nokia has from early on acknowledged that there needs to be plenty of locally and globally relevant apps for the N9. This is why the company has set up a dedicated programme to follow up the quality and quantity of apps for the device.

Developers embrace the new member of the Qt family

Many popular apps, such as Angry Birds and WiFi Hotspot, are pre-installed in the Nokia N9. There is also integrated support for important services like Facebook, Twitter, Mail for Exchange, Gmail, Skype, Picasa and Flickr. The rest of the N9 apps can be found in Ovi Store, and Janne says their number is growing fast.

“We have many activities in the developer side, where we help developers make new applications for Nokia N9. Symbian applications written in Qt are relatively easy to port to the Nokia N9, and we also support developers in this work,” Janne says, and continues that developers are very excited about the N9. “They think it’s a great new addition to the Qt family.”

Software updates coming

Janne confirms that the Nokia N9 owners can expect software updates also in the future. The first updates will be based on feedback received from operators and consumers and they make the device even more intuitive than before. The availability and content of the updates will be communicated closer to the download start.

All the details: Nokia Lumia 800

All about our stunning new smartphone.

The specs; the price; the facts

“We have received extremely positive feedback from consumer tests. I can assure you that the Nokia N9 UI innovations will be seen in other Nokia devices going forward,” says Janne.

“The whole Nokia team is excited about being able to bring the Nokia N9 to the market. Together with our latest Symbian Belle and Dual SIM devices, this is a great example of our promise to bring innovative mobile products to the market. We are very proud of our new devices and we believe consumers will enjoy using them,” Janne concludes.

Any word on this actually happening? I have had the N9 since the day it was released and am pretty much ready to buy an iPhone. Actually really dissapointed seeing as the phone was beautiful and intuitive, but the lack of apps is enough to make me change. I would have stuck to my n97 since other than the os, and the look, they both have the same capabilities!

@Ajgree: what kind of apps you wish and you don’t find?

I love my N9, but I really miss the option of having and using a alfanumeric keyboard +T9 for typing messages.

In my old Nokia 5800 Xpress you could choose between handwriting (kind of pointless as not even myself can interprete what Im writing…) :-) qwerty-keyboard, and alphanumeric with T9. Give me an app with this!!! Please! I type so much faster with this and I think it is well within the spirit of N9, that you can use your thumb for everything on the display!

the biggest bummer is that the led flash cannot be used during video recording..i bought it… :(
now tell me its not a xenon its a dual led flash but i cant use it…whats the deal nokia?
luckily enough ive found a led flashlight app that i run in the background then i open camera to shoot videos and it helps..otherwise the n9 videos rec is a letdown by not allowing the led light….
and sometimes the still camera doesnt focus on objects itself..not even when i touch to focus… :/ quite slow…
    anybody got same issues????
comments???one more thing..no skype video calls(whats the front camera for?)no swype preinstalled… some prototype videos showed that it had it..no portrait alphanumeric keypad although nokia product info shows that it has(but its only in the phone dialer app..where alphabets are not even needed much..) can anyone shed some light on both issues?

    Apps needed to N9:
    1. WhatsApp application, so you can implement your whatsapp contacts in the integrated system
    2. Smartmail app

Otherwise I now have all the apps I needed in an iphone for instance! :)

JaxtrSMS is way better than WhatsApp, Only the initiator needs to have this installed unlike WhatsApp which requires both points to have it installed.

    Hi there,
If this message goes straight to the Nokia team, Then i would like to tell them please make an update for the video calling thru the front camera , as i was surprised to hear that the product is made without its full capabilties. This is a shock from Nokia. I was expecting good from them, but when we purchase this product we are really shocked. Please waiting for video calling function .

I wish there would have been a big application called NOKIA,
so I could send my message to ALL OF IT.

I have been a happy Nokia customer since Feb.2000. I have
always looked for the best, so I have owned more than 15 various Nokia phones, I should add excellent phones. The N95 and lately the N8 were both, beyond doubt, technical revelations and for a while they truly shined, unfortunately I’ve got to see the day when Nokia also got infected by greed – a lot of it.
Feb.2011 was simply the culmination of it, the havoc started a while ago.

Unattractive UI, underpowered hardware, slow updates and a
total lack of cooperation and responsiveness from Nokia threw them from the pacemaker position they used to hold for years, to the bottom, quite the underdog of today’s mobile market. Some resilient customers are still hoping for a glorious return, however most have already migrated to different platforms and
unfortunately for Nokia, yet fortunately for me I’m the happy owner of a new, potent and supported Android phone. Do I fool myself into believing that this would be the perfect phone? No, of course not BUT it certainly is much better supported by the manufacturer, software developer and application developers. It
doesn’t really matter which model, or what it is capable of doing – what is important is the fact that Nokia was “capable” of “helping”
me in making this decision. Too bad, I didn’t want to, I was forced into making this decision.

Goodbye Nokia…and for what is worth, good luck!

    2) Why are there so few apps for the nokia n9?

    3) Why can’t I sort my apps together like with the Iphone? I like to sort my things out, so can nokia do anything for this problem

    4) Will the Alien Dalvik ever come to nokia n9? Will android apps ever come to nokia n9?
