The six senses your phone needs next

If your cell phone could talk what would it say?

Six six senses your phone needs next eye

GLOBAL – Every handset is already wired up like a mini-nervous system with hundreds of sensors – many you’re probably completely unaware of. We can use a GPS to figure out where we are, a camera to capture what we see and a microphone to record what we say.

If we want to, we can plot our position with a compass, or tilt the screen with the accelerometer. Soon, with the next generation of phones, we could have sensors that take our blood pressure, or alarms to warn us that grandma needs help.

So if phone sensors can add an extra layer to our current abilities, what would be the six senses we need next?

Six senses your phone needs next heartmonitor

Heart monitor

Mobile heart monitors could be big business if the estimates of 20 million heart deaths a year  by 2015 are correct.

Researchers have been using mobile ECG machines for a while, but until recently they could only record data to be reviewed later by a doctor.

Now scientists in the UK, and a team at the University of Pittsburgh, have been developing a cell phone monitor that also checks for heart abnormalities and, if necessary, calls your doctor – or an ambulance.

Smoke detector

Smoke detector sensors could save thousands of lives a year -  and do away with deaths caused by faulty home smoke alarms and flat batteries.

Incorporating a smoke detector into a handset has been in development for almost ten years.

In 2003 Romanian inventors, Marian Gavrila and Garbriel Patulea, designed a prototype with a sensor that spotted a change, and either sounded and alarm or linked directly to the emergency services.

Carbon monoxide

A sensor that senses smoke could also detect chemicals in the atmosphere, or high levels of carbon monoxide – which is a silent, odorless killer.

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley are already working on a carbon monoxide sensor for cell phones which would also monitor pollution and C02 emissions in urban areas.

Pollution sensors have already been on trial in London and the Far East, and will be very familiar in the smart cities of the future.

Barometer

Barometers have been measuring atmospheric pressure since the 17th Century and warn when severe weather is approaching.

One tablet launched this year mysteriously includes a barometer, but no one has been told what to use it for.

Speculation includes a global plot by a software company to predict the world’s weather, or the ability for mobile devices to recognize a change of pressure on a plane and switch to safe mode.

Thermometer

We can already tell how hot it is in any city of the world, but it would be really useful to use an inbuilt thermometer to take a person’s temperature, and transmit the data to the nearest doctor or medical centre. Thermometers could be the next big step in mobile health, which is already transforming millions of lives across the developing world.

Six senses your phone needs next bioemtric

Biometric recognition

A biometric phone sensor would be the ultimate in security. Imagine an app that used facial recognition software, or an iris scan, to confirm your identity. Bank of America and Heathrow Airport already use it, but would the technology be a help or a hindrance on a cell phone?

Civil liberties campaigners complain about misuse of data, but growing concerns about identity fraud means the market for biometrics is set to shoot up to $10 billion in the next five years. Improving technology, which makes iris scanning possible from further away, together with falling costs, makes it more likely that this is a sensor that’ll be appearing on your handset in the not too distant future.

Can I have an option to go back to previous Nokia Conversations?

This new one is very confusing..

Disagree stronly. Minimalistic, beautiful design based on the Metro language. Love it! Welcome to 2011 Nokia!

  • Eloping One

Why care about creating apps for a system that is already terminated? There will be only one phone using it…
Could Nokia provide any reason why should we invest into MeeGo apps ecosystem and Why shouldn’t devs Eloping into Android, or iOs?

    • mike

Don’t develop for this phone.. Develop for Qt. In the process your app will also function on the N9. And with slight modifications on Symbian. An on the “next billion” platform that will be unveiled next year(?)

      • Asd

I dont know about the “slight” part. Depends on how well the “next billion” devices are integrated with Qt. It might not run smoothly at all because of limited hw resource. After all, most of 30,40 phones have significantly less ram and cpu (comparing to s60 and so on). Of course, if somehow nokia finds a way to keep the current price tag with a hugely upgraded hw.

Still, the another issue is the low-end phone buyers’ purchasing power. Are they willing/able to buy apps without much of thinking?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1210750989 Pyry Pietarila

The best idea would probably be announcing that Nokia will continue making Meego devices. I think that for example one device a year could be profitable (I am not an expert in the area of how much it costs to keep the OS and HW up to date so i can’t say for sure.) and it would serve as a platform for enthusiasts and as a backup plan for the Windows phone strategy.

The amount of apps would rise (maybe slowly but the community who uses these phones was very active and creative at least with the N900) and if Nokia would continue the trend of these brilliant innovations on future devices im sure that “regular” consumers would notice it too.

As for UI improvements I think categories could be added to the feed view. What I mean is that you would get a bar on the top which would allow you to quickly switch between Facebook, Twitter or RSS feeds. In the current view if you have too many feeds the usability isn’t great. This would of course be optional and you would also have the option to get all the feeds in the same view.

I posted this idea on the IdeasProject. Search for “Make the N9 more widely available” and you will find it.

In my opinion N9 is not perfect, even though it’s an excellent device. It lacks several important features:

    * No physical camera button, even though Nokia touts the camera everywhere.
    * Only three start screens without flexibility to modify them or add new ones. I understand the idea of ease of use, but why can’t even power users add more start screens? I’d like to have one for my most used contacts and another one for most used apps and widgets.
    * The application menu gets very bad if you install 15 or 20  or more apps. No folders, or other meaningful way to find your most important tools.
    * Multi-tasking performance decreases a lot if you have more than 15 apps in the background.
    * Often when I try to zoom in and out in the gallery or the web browser, I accidentally switch to another app.

I have heard rumours Nokia would still have a successor for Nokia N9 as a backup option if Windows Phone Manngo fails. N9 clearly shows there’s potential in this platform.

  • http://twitter.com/VividTweets Deepak Bhakoo

when you have already killed the meego platform, dont want to build any more devices like n9, then why keep on asking people to give their ideas to you?!! when you dont love your child, why to expect others to raise a child who is already dead!! strange.

Its gud but it might be better if u had something like

    * A 12 Mp Camera, and a camera button.
    * A slightly bigger display, atcleast 4 inch
    * A dual Core Processor 1.5Ghz
    * An HD 720P display
Than it might be the perfect phone in the world, Because it already have the best Hardware.

Put the N8 camera on the N9 an Xenon Flash,Memory card holder,4″ Screen an this would reallly make the N9 stand out even further

    • Danilo

Agreed! Also, why on earth no FM Transmitter, no HDMI, and no USB on-the-go?! Seriously WHY?!?!?!? For me, newer phones should be better than the older phones! Well, for me my N8 still beats the N9. Who cares about the Swipe interface, when there’s nothing cool/useful to do with the device! Sadly, I think my next phone will e some Android 4 device. Congrats Elop!

      • Anonymous

no wonder .. that’s because Nokia N8 does beat Nokia N9 .. in every single way, except multitasking.

.and that is something that could be fixed.

Nokia N9 should be called Nokia N7

How about adding the possibility to actually sync the damn thing with a computer (and no not with the bad joke NokiaLink)

    Step 1:
Add support for Nokia N9 in Nokia Suite 3.2
This way users can actually transfer maps, sync their contacts and calendars.

    Step 2:
Add full support for Google Services
Add GMail, Google Docs, Sync with Contacts and Calendar
(and not some halfe as*way with Mail for Exchange

    Step 3:
Add Exactly what you did in Step 2, but for Hotmail/Live services
(if you at the same time add support for Windows Live Mail in Nokia Suite the transition from a Nokia phone to a Windows Phone would be damn easy

    Step 4:
    Add a filemanager from start

    Step 5:
Add FM Radio software, the hardware is there…why no software????

Thats all you need to do to make Nokia N9 not only beautiful…but also useful

Then you can do what ever you want with new models

..sorry almost forgot …why put a front facing camera on the Nokia N9 ..if there is no support for it from start??? Brain dead idea

It would be good if it can run ANDROID apps! The apps collection is one of the factor holding me back for a purchase of N9. So, if you cant get enough developer to create apps for MeeGo, open the floodgate for Android apps.

Other than that, the previously noted points are good addition too:
    i) Windows Live mail, calendar, contacts, skydrive sync and support
ii) Radio and Front facing camera feature

Loved this phone, only if you would have a good ecosystem around it. You should really work on ensuring all WP7 apps can work on symbian and meego. Then you can have a huge ecosystem

    • Incal

‘Ecosystem’ Now management speak starts to co-opt terminology from the natural world. What’s that all about? Can’t we come up with a proper tech description for a tech issue? I know I am being pedantic, but really we are talking about a smartphone not a boreal forest.

  • Asd

Well it has nothing to do with Nokia. But the price in Finland is way too bloated. 599e! for a limited app support…Now 4s is out for 629e. It’s quite a challenge to attract people buying N9 instead of 4s.

  • Laborant

I really love the N9 – but it has a lack of apps… so the N8 also stays in my Pocket ;)

The only thing N9 needs for now is the future. Nokia should make clear, that they will announce more Meego phones. Everything else will come along with this.

  • Petri T

Perfection? Are you kidding me? N9 is nowhere near perfect. It has an operation system which you are not going to support in the future, it lacks apps and nobody is going to develop apps for an dead OS. Too bad, MeeGo had the potential to become the next “Android”. N9 doesn’t have such great hardware as you would expect from a flagship device.

    Also, fire Elop.
