Could you make a better Nokia N9?

Published by Ian Delaney on October 24, 2011

GLOBAL – How do you improve on perfection? Well, Nokia are already looking for ways to take the successes of the Nokia N9 to the next level… and it wants your help.

If you can come up with a way of enhancing the beautifully-designed handset with its innovative swipe interface, you could become the proud owner of one. Nokia is giving away ten Nokia N9s for the best ideas.

All you have to do is go www.ideasproject.com/n9 and send in your suggestions.

We spoke to judge Peter Skillman from Nokia Design about the benefits of crowdsourcing ideas to the company.

“There’s a deep and enduring value in drawing ideas from passionate people outside the design team. The opportunity to walk a mile in someone else’s moccasins is invaluable. In the team, we’re so far beyond the bell curve in terms of our familiarity with interfaces that it’s hard to step back and see things from a regular user’s perspective.

“Just last week I was in India – in a single room dwelling – and the man who lived there was explaining to me just how hard he was finding it to use a smartphone. It really made me refocus and think again about first time use.”

But what of the Nokia N9 and its revolutionary swipe interface?

“Swipe as a UI pattern has been incredibly successful. It’s such a simple gesture, like moving a piece of paper across the table. But its beauty is in the way it allows us to reduce: we can eliminate all the buttons.”

“The pattern of the Nokia N9 is the intellectual foundation of everything we’re doing. We’re leveraging the success there and moving it forward.”

Anyway, if you think you can do better, send your ideas to the Nokia Ideas Project, which will be judged by Nikki Barton, Anton Fahlgren and Peter Skillman.

So, go on, how would you improve the usability of the Nokia N9? For full details and conditions, go to www.ideasproject.com/n9.

Generally it is good form to open in the same tab/window and let the user opt to do otherwise by their right-click menu option.

It’s quite aggravating to have a link open in a new window when it is (to my way of looking at it) just a navigation within the same website.

I’d say same tab, because if a person is done with reading 1 page, why would he leave this tab open? For me, this makes no sense at all. You could always right-click the link…..

  • Grrr

This must be one of the worst web site designs in years …
I mean seriously, pretty much unusable.

  • Anonymous

I’d say .. old design. … this new site design is a giant mess..

  • Anonymous

On Safari it actually opens up in a New Window – which is not good.

It’s grEAt n easy to use on my IPad!!

  • Cycnus

    agree…
is there a way to revert to the old look?
i fell very uncomfortable with this new site.

  • Cycnus

    agree…
it’s in line with nokia new design philosophy.
the new american CEO, the new OS from competitor, the new ring tone, the new UI from competitor.

I just hope this won’t be the end of the world for nokia.

  • xyberxy

original is always best! bring back the old nokia conversations

don’t imitate metro UI it sucks…

  • Cycnus

Actually this is inline with what nokia doing…
    New CEO
New strategy (drop symbian, meego, go to WP7)
    New Ring tone
    New font
    New (conversations) web site

Too bad, we like the old web site (and symbian) better than the new web site (and metro UI).

  • Tarhini Hassan

ok u like symbian, but most of the world are not …
check market share every quarter, numbers always tell the truth.

I have my browser set up so a middle click (on the wheel) opens a link
in a new background tab, so I’d be happy for the notification bar to
open links in the same tab, allowing me to make the choice myself.

  • Anonymous

I see the comments are now about the site in general. I think it’s too soon to make a judgement on the new look. My initial thoughts are that it’s clean and easy to navigate, but not exactly pretty. The proof of its success or otherwise will be in how we use it in the coming weeks.

How can i collapse the navigation ‘bar’? From the home page it is possible via the + and – symbols, but in articles neither the – or + symbol are shown, only the and Home icons, why is there no option to close or open the navigation bar anymore, it is now always open?

We can press ctrl in case we need it in a new tab… I use ctrl all the time… Otherwise, sometimes I require it to be in the same tab so that I could navigate to and fro from the pages.

So Nokia can’t handle criticism? My post which I sent about 9 hours ago has been removed, so has a lot of other posts.

Simply: when you don’t like Nokia then you don’t have to take it – this is free world! When you feel you are slave of WP7 then you are just another looser without wider perispective then WinHorror-with-a-Numer.

No, I like Linux so MeeGo. Also for it contains good practics from Symbian. Numbers always tell the truth, question more important is who is counting numbers, and what is his point of interests – usually this make numbers are subject of changes.

I really love Nokia Products. I’ve realize that No matter what I purchase I always come back to Nokia. Living in NYC, my products stands out and I love that. I’m repurchasing my N900 ( charging port issues). I’m waiting for the E7 to ship with Belle, repurchasing the N8( Gave it to my best friend) and The N9 shall be mine.

Well PR1.1 was released today… that checks one box

You and me both. NYC, a bit of a Nokia ghost-town, but it’s great. My N900 was awesome, my N8 was great, my E7 was great too, my N9 will be the best, I’m sure of it. Can’t wait to ride the 1 train and get that N9 out! Hopefully no one will steal it! Oh wait, it’s not an iPhone, so I should be ok!!  ;)

    I WANT the Nokia N950!

  • http://twitter.com/capricotwi04 Caprico

Sorry but Nokia doesn’t give what their customers want or what could be successful.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ESKBDPQZM4MS7XI3WTGVX73OXM Sebastian

Where can you buy Nokia N950? When can I purchase it? It looks great!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EQNSDPPWD5RIWQKPYT5BAW7TBU Andy S.

here what you can do to improve the N9 :
    - 3G video call support
    - regular SIM card slot
    - microSD card slot
    - removable battery
    - N86 8MP’s camera modul
    - and many other things.

    PS:
there are reasons why i stick with Nokia product and don’t buy apple product like everyone else, cause i don’t like apple’s specifications.
but it seems like Nokia is trying so hard to imitate apple in its newest and latest products.
if it continues as it is, i think i’ll stop buying Nokia and go to other manufacturers’s products that suit my needs.

    good luck!

A faster processor/GPU and lager battery capacity and if possible a better camera. Apart from that it is perfect for me. Beautiful design and perfect size screen.

And note that some (or a lot?) of us will never but a WP phone in its restricted present form. Monopoly is only fun as a board game.

  • Joku Ytyr

These apps/games would make n9 better
    -Whatsapp
    -shazam or something like that
-more games (gameloft games like modern combat 3)

    1) A possibility to upgrade ur memory with Micro Sd cards…
    2) Able to make 3G Video calls including on Skype…
    3) More popular games if possible…Call of Duty, God of War etc…
    4) A faster modem…
